Hi, my name is Linda Burkett. I have been in the veterinary field since 1992. I was an assistant for 3 years until I graduated from UC Blue Ash with my Vet Tech degree. I was a technician for 20 years before changing my role to a CSR. I have been a CSR for 10 years and counting. I have 10 wonderful cats and 3 Chihuahuas. In my spare time, I spend time with my husband and son or at church. I joined HSAH in May 2024.

Have you ever feared a black cat crossing your path? This is from ancient superstitions where people thought this meant bad luck. For many cultures and historical settings, black cats were actually meant for positive things. So, to try and dispel these myths about black cats, National Black Cat Appreciation Day was created to be celebrated on August 17 every year.

Today, pop culture loves black cats. There’s the sarcastic Thackery Binx in “Hocus Pocus” and Salem, in “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” and we can’t forget the classic cartoon black cat, Luna in “Sailor Moon.” Black cats are seen as loyal companions, and this is what they were seen as for a lot of cultures in history too.

So, who’s to blame for this negative black cat spin? Superstition! But mostly because during the Middle Ages, people (mainly the Catholic Church) saw witches as shape-shifting black cats and the damage was done. From then on, black cats were seen as evil entities for years and years to follow.

But not everyone sees black cats this way. In fact, black cats are actually welcomed by a lot of people. For some, a visit from a black cat means good luck, and for others it meant prosperity or romance. Hey — in some cultures black cats are even worshipped. Basically, there’s no need to fear them. On this day, we celebrate our cuddly friends, no matter what color their coat is!

Hi, my name is Aubrie Ball and I am one of the Registered Veterinary Technicians here at Hillside. I just graduated from the vet tech program at UC in April 2024, passed my VTNE, and became a registered veterinary technician in July 2024. During my time at school, I chose to do my preceptorship here at Hillside and absolutely loved it and knew I wanted to be a part of the team. I’ve been working here since May 2024. I grew up always being around animals and knew I wanted to work in the veterinary field ever since I was a little girl. I am from Bethel, OH but I now reside in Peebles, OH with my husband, Colten. In my free time you’ll find me either cooking or baking, spending time with family, or doing something outdoors with my husband. I have a dog named Cleo and 2 cats named Chester and Callie.

BORDETELLA (Referenced as “Kennel Cough Vaccine”)
1. This vaccine is administered intranasally (drops in the nose) at 8 weeks or older followed by an injectable booster 2-4 weeks later.
2. Boosters are given annually (every 6 months for dogs who are at high risk).
3. For best results this vaccine should be given at least 72 hours prior to placing in kennel or other group situation.

Bordetella is a bacterium which like the Parainfluenza component of the DHLP-P vaccine is one of the agents involved in the "kennel cough" syndrome. Although not required, this vaccine is strongly recommended for those dogs that are frequently exposed to large groups of dogs (e.g. kennels, groomers, dog parks, shows).

DAPL (Referenced as “Distemper Parvo”)
1. Puppies are vaccinated every 3 weeks (minimum every 2 weeks, maximum every 4 weeks) from the age of 8 weeks until older than 4 months (16 weeks). A sample schedule would be 8, 11, 14, 17
2. Adults not previously vaccinated are given 1 year DAP with Lepto
3. Lepto is boosted 2-4 weeks later
4. Yearly boosters are given.
5. Required for hospitalization and boarding

This is a 4 in 1 vaccine and includes antigens against: Distemper, Adenovirus, Leptospirosis and Parvovirus.
Canine distemper virus causes a disease syndrome consisting of fever, loss of appetite, cough, runny nose and eyes, diarrhea, and lethargy. If dogs survive the acute phase of the disease, they frequently develop seizures or other permanent devastating neurological changes. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver which is caused by an adenovirus. In puppies this virus can lead to a rapidly fatal disease. Leptospirosis is caused by a bacterium which damages both the kidney and liver. It is a public health concern since the same organism causes a life threatening disease in humans. Lastly, the most important of these diseases is Parvovirus. This virus can lead to severe vomiting, diarrhea, and death in any age group but affects the young most frequently and severely. Even in those pups treated aggressively early in the course of the disease the prognosis is guarded.
While these diseases vary in severity they all may seriously compromise the health of your dog. A vaccination program starting as a pup in strongly recommended.

RABIES - DOGS
1. Puppies are required by Ohio law to be vaccinated after 12 weeks of age. The first vaccine is good for one year. They must be vaccinated a year later (which would be a 3 year vaccine)
2. All dogs a year or older which have not been previously vaccinated receive a single injection, followed by a booster a year later.
3. Boosters are then given every 3 years.
4. Required by Ohio State Law.

RABIES - Cats
1. Kittens are vaccinated at 4 months or older and revaccinated in a year.
2. Boosters are then given every three years.
3. Cats not given the first injection until a year or older are then given a booster every 3 years.

This is an ancient viral disease of most warm blooded animals including humans and thus is an important public health concern. It causes a total disease of the nervous system resulting in behavioral changes, paralysis, and ultimately death. Rabies is seen in bats, and they have been known to be carriers. Because of an increased prevalence of the disease in cats in some area of the United States (there are now more cases reported in cats than in dogs) the American Veterinary Medical Association recommends mandatory rabies vaccinations for cats as well as dogs.
4. Not required by law but recommended.

National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual observance held in August to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. Together, we can help raise awareness about the importance of vaccination and encourage people to talk to a healthcare provider they trust about staying up to date on their vaccinations.

Over the next few days, we'll explain our recommended vaccines for your pets and their importance.

Tall and elegant, the Azawakh is a West African sighthound who originates from the countries of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The Azawakh has a short, fine coat which may come in any color or color combinations: red, clear sand to fawn, brindled, parti-color (which may be predominantly white), blue, black and brown. The head may have a black mask and there may be white markings on the legs, bib and at the tip of tail. There are no color or marking disqualifications in the breed. Befitting its heritage, the Azawakh excels as a companion, guardian and a lure courser in the United States.

This ancient hunting hound is so lean and rangy that his bone structure and musculature can plainly be seen beneath his skin. The smooth S-shaped contours, deep chest, and aerodynamic head mark the Azwakh as a member of the sighthound family, canine sprinters that rely on keen vision and blazing speed to fix and course their prey. The ultrafine coat comes in several colors and patterns. The overall look of this leggy hound is one of elegance and fineness, but don't be fooled: This is a tough, durable hunter who's been chasing gazelle across the scorching sands of the Sahara for more than a thousand years.

Pronunciation - Az-a-walk

National Pet Fire Safety Day takes place every year on July 15, and it’s a day to learn how to keep your pet safe in a fire. For many of us, pets are our most precious asset so it makes sense that we would dedicate a day to keeping them safe during one of the scariest things we can imagine. It was started by the Kennel Club and ADT Security in 2009 to help pet owners learn safety measures to protect their beloved pets and homes from fire, and it’s a great opportunity to learn how to keep your fur baby safe.

Get this useful decoration
On July 15, get a free Pet Fire Safety Window Cling at your local volunteer firehouse. First responders will see this and know to look out for any pets inside.

Share it to save lives
Use to post on social media and raise awareness to friends and family about the day and ways that they can keep their pets safe from fires.

Have a fire drill
For families with kids, this tradition is even more important. Discuss your family evacuation plan, designate someone to carry out the pets and execute a fire drill on this day every year.

National Kitten Day on July 10th purrfectly celebrates the cuddly warmth of a kitty. The miniature fur balls of energy snuggle their way into our hearts with no effort at all. Within a flick of their tiny ears, we're in love.

The day aims to remind us that while kittens are well equipped to find their way into our hearts, many don't find homes. They're abandoned at shelters, on the side of the road or wild and feral. Spaying and neutering our pets, including our cats, is vital to their health and keeping the stray population down.

Another goal of awareness campaigns like this one is to encourage adoptions. Instead of purchasing a kitten from a pet store, adopt from a shelter. Many kittens are born in shelters. While their ages may vary, all kittens do become cats.
