🛝🏆 BREC's Planning and Engineering Department received awards from ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) Louisiana on 11.01.2024 for BREC's Independence Community Park Botanical Garden, Phase I and BREC's Jackson Community Park Site Improvements, Phase II.
For the Independence Botanical Garden, designers incorporated guiding principles to create a shared entry plaza that seamlessly integrates two facilities into a cohesive design complex. These principles established common goals between BREC's Planning and Engineering Department's design team of landscape architects, the Botanical Garden Board, community members, and the Main Library to transform a larger area of Independence Park into a premier Botanic Garden. The result is a place in the city's heart that offers visitors an urban oasis where they can gather with friends, relax, and meditate amidst the landscape. The new Phase 1 garden is a place where visitors from all generations can stroll, relax, meditate, enjoy the natural beauty of the flora, and maybe even interact through shared experiences that engage the natural world.
The Jackson Community Park revitalization, part of BREC's Imagine Your Parks Strategic Plan, transformed a neighborhood park into a premier Community Park despite its small size. Through extensive planning and community input, the park saw the introduction of innovative features in 2022, including a new parking area, enhanced natural stormwater management, a walking loop, fitness equipment, and extensive landscaping. Highlights of the transformation include a state-of-the-art Community Center, and an inclusive playground designed for children of all abilities, promoting accessibility and engagement. The project showcases a commitment to creating dynamic, inclusive outdoor spaces that cater to the diverse needs of the community. The playground was thoughtfully designed to accommodate children of all abilities. The recreation center is seamlessly integrated with the playground and boasts a spacious public meeting room with panoramic views of the playground and surrounding area.
We thank East Baton Rouge Parish patrons for their support and valuable input that went into these projects and can't wait to show off our next projects in the upcoming years.
