Founded in 1979, the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is the first NO-KILL non-profit animal organization/shelter committed to the well-being of animals in the Baton Rouge community. Our volunteers can be found caring for animals in their home, photographing and videoing animals for adoption, performing shelter maintenance and cleaning, purchasing and stocking supplies, returning phone

calls and emails, making public appearances with adoptable pets, visiting nursing home patients with their pets, performing educational presentations to children, fundraising, assisting and educating the community in spay/neuter efforts, and working on special events just to name a few.

Bobbie is negative for heartworms!! ❤️‍🩹👏🏻🥳 Thanks to our donors, CAAWS is able to treat its adoptable dogs for heartworms, and will even pay for treatment after adopted. Adoption update on Jocelyn, now named Cookie! 🍪

“Cookie has been doing great, and think she has fully adjusted! She loves her wet canned food and toys. I also got her a cat tree that she loves to climb and scratch on.”

Kennel reactivity is common in shelter dogs. Most of the time they are just wound up, stressed out, and ready to be out of shelter environment. To a dog, the shelter is scary, lonely, and frustrating. Jack is one of our adoptable dogs that looks scary at first but is the biggest ham you’ll ever meet. He’s often overlooked because when new people walk by, he reacts like this, but if you give him a chance, he’s a completely different dog. Norma Jean, the sweetest, squishiest girl in the world! 🩷 Norma Jean came to CAAWS in January of 2023 with 7 puppies alongside her. She was amazing with her babies and was so loving and devoted. All of her pups found perfect homes but Norma Jean is the last one left, still waiting for her perfect person. Norma Jean does have some issues with reactivity, especially towards other dogs. Unfortunately we have no way of knowing what her life was like before CAAWS or what caused her to struggle with this. 😥 At this time, she would do best in a home with no other animals or children. She needs an owner that is willing to help her learn and heal from her past experiences before CAAWS and help her live life to the fullest. Norma Jean is SO sweet and has so much love to give, she just needs the right environment! We know that the perfect person is out there waiting for her.
