LSU Vets: How to keep your pets safe during
Hurricane Delta

BATON ROUGE - As Delta rolls on a path towards Louisiana, residents are making swift preparations to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Many residents have furry members of the family and their needs are also important during hurricanes.

Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU SVM) issued an advisory on what steps pet owners can take to ensure the safety of their domestic animals should they need to evacuate during Hurricane Delta.

The Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART – lsart.org), the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (ldaf.state.la.us), and LSU School of Veterinary Medicine suggest the following measures ahead of an evacuation:

WHAT TO DO:

-Don’t leave your pet at home! While most evacuations last only a few days, there are times that you may not be able to return quickly. The safest place for your pet is with you.

-If you are going to a hotel, call ahead and make sure, in advance, that animals are welcome. Many hotels relax their policies during times of crisis, but don’t assume that this will be the case. For on-line information about pet-friendly hotels, check out petswelcome.com or bringfido.com/lodging.

-If you are staying with friends or family, make sure that your pets are invited as well. If not, ask for recommendations of nearby veterinary hospitals or boarding kennels and make reservations in advance.

-Be sure that your pets are up-to-date on all vaccinations and bring proof of vaccinations with you. It is a good idea to ask your veterinarian now for a copy of your pet’s vaccination record. Keep this with your emergency kit.

-If your pet is on medication, bring at least a two week supply.

-Identification of your pet is crucial! The ideal form of identification is a microchip* or a tattoo. At minimum, your pet should have a tag with his name, your name, and your phone number on it. Pictures of your pet that capture identifying features are also a good idea.

*A microchip is a tiny permanent identification tag, placed under your pet’s skin by your veterinarian. By registering your name and address with the microchip company, your pet can be scanned and instantly identified at any animal facility.

WHAT TO BRING:

-Enough pet food for one week

-Food bowl

-Water bowl

-Bottled water

-Leash

-Harness or collar

-Proof of vaccinations

-Rabies tag

-Portable kennel

-Litter box and litter for cats

-Trash bags for stool disposal

-Newspaper or towels for crate lining

-Heartworm preventative

-Flea and tick protection

-All medications

-For exotic pets, bring their entire habitat, including heat lamps and extension cords

Your pet’s kennel should be large enough for him to stand and turn around. Collapsible wire crates are best if your pets might be in a non-air conditioned environment for an extended period. A battery-operated fan that can attach to the cage can be a much appreciated addition. Molded plastic airline-approved crates make for easier transport and are best for animals that don’t travel well in the car.

People with special needs or people without transportation who have pets contact their parish emergency managers (e.g. the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness) well ahead of time so that they can be registered for requiring special assistance in a disaster situation. You may need to contact the parish emergency manager via the parish sheriff’s office. For a list of parish emergency preparedness offices and contacts, go to gohsep.la.gov/ABOUT/STATE-REGIONS.

If your pet requires emergency medical care after-hours, you can bring your pet to the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital on Skip Bertman Drive; the hospital is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year for emergency cases. For pets and small exotics, call 225-578-9600, and for horses and farm animals call 225-578-9500. The LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital typically stays open during hurricanes, but please call first to be sure that the hospital is accessible and we are able to accept patients following a disaster.

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is one of only 32 veterinary schools in the U.S. and the only one in Louisiana.

Today, The Paw🐾fect Place highlights the latest fashion wear, modeled by our lovely guest, Miss "Sadie" Leinweber. She is wearing a sweater in a lovely light hue of Jungle Green designed by Frisco Dog Co. It can be worn in a casual setting or for evening wear, paired with slim-line pants, or a skirt. As you can see, the finishing touch of the scarf gives off a jaunty air, lending a feeling of warmth & style! 😁 πŸ• πŸΎπŸ’•

Fellow pet owners, I need to share this with you. Lengthy, but still.....I was on Coursey Blvd, driving back home from the store. I saw a little dog, running & limping, so I tried to catch it. I followed it in my car, got out several times, even pulled into a field, calling out to it. And then, it ran behind a strip mall where Rotolo's was, right near a Veternarian's. I followed it on foot to the back of the building, w/the little dog being right within hand's reach, but then it ran to the front of the building and into the parking lot. I yelled, "Treat! Treat!" And it stopped for a minute and I really thought it was going to come to me, but it turned around and walked right into the street and got hit. I literally fell to my knees. I went in the street & picked it & all of it's insides up & ran into the Vet's. The Vet & his assistant had been standing at the door & he told me to come right into the surgery room, but it was dead. He said he knew the dog, it was a client and belonged to an elderly customer's of his that lives in Lake Sherwood. This happened 4 hours ago and I'm still crying.
I am asking all of you...pleading, in fact.... please, please....check along your fence line, check for areas that your dog might be able to get through. And you might be in the habit of letting your animals out and they've always come back, but there's going to be that one time where it doesn't come back. And your heart is going to be broken. Please....be a responsible pet owner, before it's too late πŸ’” πŸ’” πŸ’”.

VERY IMPORTANT!!
From a dog owner's post I saw on Facebook;

Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terror. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better.

Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn't come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog.

I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was.

So I took him to emergency vet.

It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren't out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out.

The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing.

Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets.

Here is a list of essential oils not to use if you have a dog at home

Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
Birch (Betula)
Bitter Almond (Prunus dulcis)
Boldo (Peumus boldus)
Calamus (Acorus calamus)
Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora)
Cassia (Cassia fistula)
Chenopodium (Chenopodium album)
Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum)
Garlic (Allium sativum)
Goosefoot (Chenopodium murale)
Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana)
Hyssop (Hyssopus sp. with the exception of Decumbens)
Juniper (Juniperus sp. with the exception of Juniper Berry)
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
Mustard (Brassica juncea)
Oregano (Origanum vulgare)
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)
Red or White Thyme
Rue (Ruta graveolens)
Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus)
Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)
Savory (Satureja)
Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)
Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Terebinth (Pistacia palaestina)
Thuja (Thuja occidentalis)
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

UPDATE 2: Well, Blaze found her "forever home" over the weekend. Thank you, everyone, very much, for your inquiries. πŸ’—

UPDATE: Blaze might have found a "forever home." I will keep you updated.

Good morning Facebook family! I have a long-time customer that had a baby recently. Unfortunately, her Pediatrician says the baby is allergic to their dog 😒. Blaze is a beautiful & loving 3-year old Australian Shepherd. She's house-broken, but can be left in the house all day w/o making an oopsie. She is also kennel-trained. She's very playful & has a lot of energy, but also loves to lay around & snuggle w/her people. She gets along great w/other dogs & small children, as long as they're not pulling her hair & wanting to ride her like a horse 🐎. Per my customer: "Blaze is up-to-date on all of her shots; we paid nearly $400 last month on yearly shots & the once-a-year heartworm (all records provided upon request). Blaze is not an outdoor dog. She does not sleep outside. She goes outside, of course, but she goes back to the door after a little while & let's us know she wants back in, even if we are not going inside at the time. She's not the "Cowboy/girl companion, roam the range, herd 'em up" dog.

Blaze's owner is asking $150 to make sure she goes to a family that will love & take good care of her. As Blaze's boarder, I can vouch for Blaze...she is a very loving girl & a joy for me to love & care for!
