When I was young, my parents had this group of families they did nearly everything with. The parents would play games, or talk, or watch a movie in one room and the kids would hang out in the other room.

I’m sure we ate, but honestly, I have a hard time remembering that part. I just remember being together all the time.

Sunday’s after church. Friday’s just because. Vacations in the summer.

They did life together.

It was more like family than friends. Aunt her. Uncle him. Is that your sister? Basically.
They did the mundane together. They did the major together. They didn’t even live in the same neighborhood as each other, but they put in the work to make it work.

I remember them being there in the freezing cold to help load and haul mattresses and boxes the night my family moved, and I remember hunkering down in the same house once during a truly horrific storm.

I remember Aunt Tammy ironing clothes and folding laundry while the adults all talked in the living room. I remember Aunt Kathy making yellow cake with chocolate icing because she knew it was my favorite. I remember going shopping with my best friend and her mom and buying matching dresses.

Truly, they did life together.

I can’t even explain how badly I want that, especially now with everything that’s going on. Shallow friendships are fine, but they aren’t answering the call down deep in my heart. I want it for my kids. I want it for my husband. I want it for myself.

I want someone who can encourage me when my tank is empty without any judgement. I want someone who can tell me the truth when I’m standing at a stop-still and I have no idea where to turn. I want someone to play Black Jack with, and laugh about parenthood and wifehood and whatever with.

I want someone to cry with when my parents get older. I want someone who stays bright when life gets dark. I want someone to guide me back when I’ve lost my way without reservation. I want someone to celebrate alongside, and someone who can bring over champagne and chocolate cake when there’s a major success without thinking of it as bragging.

I want someone who will open the door when I show up with bare feet and a large coffee unannounced. I want someone who trusts me enough to come to me when I mess up, and lets me apologize without throwing the entire thing in the garbage.

I want someone I can put down as my kid’s emergency contact without flinching, and who lets my kids play and raid their pantry when I need to run an errand, and someone my kids can respect and turn to as teenagers when it’s not cool to ask their mom.

I want someone who will help me, and I want someone who isn’t the least bit afraid to ask for my help in return, cause heaven knows I’ll be right there.

Flat tire? Of course, I’ll help you push your car, but you should be warned that I’m going to laugh about it forever.

Need to borrow some milk? Yup. I’ll be right over.

Teenager daughter giving you so much sass you might explode? Spill it, and I’ll pour us some sweet tea as I listen.

Forgot to bring poster board up to the school? Gotcha covered, my friend.

Marriage getting hard? Work getting stressful? A friend broke your heart? Umm yeah, you can share. I promise your secrets aren’t going anywhere.

I want people to do life with.

The good, the bad, the pretty, the ugly, the messy, the spiritual. The fun, the difficult, the every day, and the once-in-a-lifetime. The when-you-feel-like-it, and even-when-you-don’t.

I want people to do life with.

Love,
Me

Recipe for raising a “horse girl”…….

You bring them home from the hospital and instead of keeping them home you let them breathe in the smell of horses every chance you get….

Then at a few months old you prop them up in the saddle and hold them there to just sit in the saddle….

When they are 3 they say they can’t pick up the horse’s hoof …you help them but then tell them they need to finish themselves…..

You let them lead the 23 yr old faithful gelding because leading the big horse makes them feel so proud….

At 4 yrs old you teach them that the horse depends on them for water, hay, grain….Dinner might be almost ready in the house, but ponies eat first …..

At 5 years old, when she falls off for the first time, you check to make sure nothings broken, wipe her tears, then you give her a leg up and tell her to get it done, because you KNOW she’s a great rider…..

At 10 years old when she doesn’t place in her class at the horse show and she’s falling apart, you ask her if her horse worked hard for her, and then you tell her that to her horse she is #1, and to keep riding, because her horse depends on her……

At 12 years old she comes home from school and tells you another kid said something mean at school to someone she knows. She then tells you she told that kid to shut their mouth and keep it to themselves…. Then she walked off with the kid that was being made fun of……

At 13 years old her friends at the barn are as close as siblings……they support her in her wins and her falls…..the barn has created relationships that are thicker than blood….

At 15 years old her first “boyfriend” breaks up with her ….. you can tell she is upset so you both head to the barn. She wraps her arms around her horse’s neck, breathes him in, and the tears flow. But you can see that resolve emerge when she’s cantering around the ring…. She tells you her horse is better than that boy any day.

You heard others say over the years…..

“Horses are too expensive!”
“She’s going to get sick from all the germs.”
“She’s going to fall off and get hurt.”
“She spends too much time at the barn.”

When she is a young woman and leaves your home, off on her next adventure, you head out to the barn. You thank her horses, you breathe them in, you wrap your arms around them because ….

Horses helped you to create a confident, self-assured, responsible, kind, nurturing, outdoors-loving, tough as nails, throws her shoulders back and stands tall, strong woman.

To all the parents raising “horse girls” keep going, you are giving them more than just riding lessons…..

The purchase of a well bred purebred did not sentence another dog to death.
The purchase of a well bred purebred did not cause an increase in the number of dogs in shelter.
Someone wanting a dog with a predictable temperament from healthy lineage did not cause another dog to not get adopted.
Someone's meticulous research and support of only the most responsible of breeders is not the problem. It is not what you should be mad at. It is not what you should be pushing the blame onto.
I am not the one who brought these dogs into the world irresponsibly and left them in a shelter. Responsible breeders are not the ones who put dogs into shelters either.
It is my home, my life, and my choice of what kind of dog to bring into it. Maybe I needed a working dog, a sport dog, or simply a companion puppy to raise of a breed I enjoy. No matter the reason, the choice to support a reputable breeder did not send a shelter dog to its death.
A breeder who health tests, temperament tests, studies pedigrees, proves a dog worthy of being bred, and only breeds when doing so is of benefit to the breed is not contributing to the number of homeless dogs.
The number of homeless dogs in the world is a problem, but it is not a problem exacerbated by reputable breeders and those who purchase from them.
Your neighbor down the street who refuses to contain his unaltered dogs IS contributing to the problem.
Your friend who impulse bought a dog at Pet Land IS contributing to the problem.
That guy on Craigslist pumping out the trendiest designer mix as fast as he can IS contributing to the problem.
Your relative who just HAS to let their dog have one litter “so she can experience motherhood” or because “she’s just so sweet” IS contributing to the problem.
Your old high school classmate who bought a high energy working breed without taking the time to research its needs and realize it was not a good fit for their household ahead of time IS contributing to the problem.
A reputable breeder offers their lifelong support. A reputable breeder would never allow their dogs to end up in a shelter to begin with. A reputable breeder makes it a contractual obligation to return dogs they have produced back to them should you find yourself unable of keeping it.
It is understandable to be angry about the number of homeless dogs in the world, but if you take a deeper look, you will find your anger is misplaced.
If you take a deeper look, you will find reputable breeders and those of us who purchase from them are just as angry, we are just pointing fingers at the right causes.

In conclusion, Blaming responsible breeders for shelter dogs is like blaming Harvard graduates for crack babies.

03/07/2024

When God sends him you won’t have to wonder.

You won’t have to wonder how he feels about you.
You won’t have to wonder if you’re enough.
You won’t have to wonder if he thinks you’re pretty.
You won’t have to wonder if you’re being compared.
You won’t have to wonder if you’re the only one.

When God sends him, he will arrive with clarity.
He will be upfront and honest with his intentions.
He won’t play confusing games.

You won’t have to beg for basic things like communication.
You won’t have to pull all the weight of the relationship.
You won’t have to cry yourself to sleep or feel alone while with someone.

There are so many things I used to think were normal and part of the “work” that comes along with a relationship. I’m not denying that relationships do take work…but don’t use that as an excuse to settle for less than you deserve.

When God sends him it will be simple.

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.
Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts
Anyway!
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his to***co,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.
Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.
Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.
When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.
Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.
When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.

THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 60 years ago, & our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt, had a large middle class, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What happened? Can you spell 'politicians?'

I hope this goes around the USA at least 100 times. YOU can help it get there.

10/01/2023

My purchase of a well bred purebred dog does not condemn another dog to death.
My purchase of a well bred purebred dog does not result in an rise in the number of shelter dogs.
My desire to have a dog with predictable temperament from a healthy line does not result in another dog not getting adopted at the shelter.
My careful research on the most responsible breeders who meet all requirements is not the problem.
It's not what you should be mad at.
It's not who you should blame.
I am not the one who irresponsibly brought these dogs into this world and left them in a shelter.
Responsible breeders aren't the ones bringing these dogs to animal shelters either.
It's my home, my life and my choice what kind of dog I want to bring in. Maybe I need a working dog, sport dog, show dog or just a companion dog of a certain breed that suits me best.
Whatever reason I choose to support a reputable breeder, it will not send a dog to its death.
A breeder who does health tests, temperament tests and titling of their dogs does not contribute to the number of stray dogs.
The number of stray dogs in the world is a problem, but it's not a problem made worse by reputable breeders or those who buy from them.
Your neighbor who gets a "purebred" dog without papers because they're cheap is contributing to the problem.
Your friend who spontaneously bought a puppy from Petland is contributing to the problem.
The person scrambling to pump out the hottest designer mix ASAP is contributing to the problem.
Your relatives who have to get their dog covered once, "so she can experience what it's like to be a mother" or because "she's such a good/cute/sweet girl" are contributing to the problem.
Your old school mate who bought a working dog with lots of energy without taking the time to research its needs and character who ultimately sees it doesn't fit his lifestyle is the problem.
A reputable breeder offers lifetime support. A serious breeder would never allow their dogs to end up in a shelter from the start.
It's understandable to be angry about the number of homeless dogs in the world, but if you look closer, you'll find that your anger is misplaced

*I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Breeders do not get a day off. EVER. We have missed out on so many vacations, functions, dates etc becuase the animals need us 24/7, 365 days a year. Most people see the good side of breeding animals. Rarely do they ever see the failures, heartbreaks, prayers and VERY long nights that go along side the ups. We have had to make HUGE sacrifices to pay enormous vet bills, we have had to make the tough calls to end suffering, cried for joy and heartache. Given CPR at 2am to newborns and work on them until we either bring em back or know we tried everything we could. On top of all the stress and anxiety that comes with it. We don’t get paid hourly and have spent countless nights up with them for one reason or another. Responsible breeders don’t get enough credit, whether it’s dogs or horses.

Don’t get me wrong, we love what we do. For us the ups outweigh the downs. But it Doesn’t take away how much of ourselves is poured into it*

POTENTIAL OWNER: How much is the puppy?
BREEDER: $2,000+ dollars.

POTENTIAL OWNER: What?? It's way too expensive!!

BREEDER: What do you think would be a good price?

POTENTIAL OWNER: No more than $500. You breeders are so overpriced.

BREEDER: I am sorry you see it this way; why don't you try it yourself?

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I've never done it!

BREEDER: For FREE, I can teach you how to do it, and you will also have the knowledge of how to do it again.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Perfect, thank you!

BREEDER: To start, you will need a female(average cost $3500 and up)and a male(average cost $3500 and up) or semen (average $2000-$2500 and up). You will need to do & pass OFA Breed specific OFA health testing on them, which averages about $800+ per dog.

Let's not forget progesterone testings, inseminations, ultrasounds, x-rays, semen collections, semen analysis, potentially semen overnight shipping, and so on ($1500+).
Raise and provide daily care, feeding & grooming for two years. (minimal $250 per month) Oh, don’t forget monthly prevention, annual vet visits, and any other additional vet visits.

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have that much money...

BREEDER: For $1200, you can raise a litter and then keep one of the puppies. Obviously, you will pay the cost of whelping & care.

POTENTIAL OWNER: I can do that.

BREEDER: OK, so I have a female due to whelp in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 around the clock for at least 9-10 weeks to help with delivery and care. ( a million loads of laundry) Another 4-plus weeks to monitor mom and puppies.

POTENTIAL OWNER: ten weeks?? It's way too much time for me! I have to work.

BREEDER: Plus, You will need to be available for puppy families to call you 24/7 with a worry or concern, no matter the age. You MUST also be ready to take back the puppy/dog at any age if the family has an unforeseen emergency.

BREEDER: You will also need the reproductive vet to do progesterone testing($110/ test ), X-ray to get headcount ($100) & C-section($1000-$5000 if needed), and initial vet care on pups until old enough to be placed ($800+).
Have on hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, puppy pads, incubator, oxygen concentrator, nebulizer, heating lamp, whelping box, puppy pen, blankets, toys, bowls, cleaning supplies, appropriate food with supplements for mothers, formula, medications & hand feeding supplies in case of emergency...

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have all these things!

BREEDER: For $5000+, you can buy them.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Ummm .... You know, I think it might be better if I just buy a puppy.

BREEDER: Wise decision.
For us, there are no vacations or holidays; while you go to visit with family & friends, we are home at our dogs' side caring for them. It is a no-break commitment.

THIS IS THE REALITY
When you choose a reputable person, you aren’t only purchasing the puppy but also knowledge, support, experience, love, time, sacrifices, etc...
**Plus the cost of lifetime support to the puppy owners…
These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, (best-case scenario!!!) As a reputable breeder who takes on this journey full-time!
Very well said…
