Can we talk about winter paw care?

Because this is something I see SO many people overlook ❄️

I'm sharing Tofu's post-walk routine because after countless winters with dogs, I've seen too many painful paw injuries that were completely preventable.

Those sidewalk salts and ice melts?

They're designed to be caustic—they literally burn through ice. Now imagine that on your dog's sensitive paw pads.

Add freezing temperatures that cause cracking, plus snow that balls up between toes... it's a recipe for pain.

What I do after EVERY winter walk:

I clean Tofu's paws with hot water mixed with an iodine solution—the same disinfectant they use in surgical prep. This removes all the salt, chemicals, and debris while disinfecting any micro-abrasions.

Then I massage in a protective salve to moisturize and create a barrier for the next walk. This particular paw salve I developed in collaboration with Stinging Nettle Botanics, and is made up of all natural herbal products so you don't have to worry if they lick it off!

If your dog wasn't trained to accept paw handling from puppyhood, you can't provide this care.

You also can't trim nails, remove stuck objects, or check for injuries. Start handling your dog's paws when they are puppies/right away so you can provide this fundamental health care.

For my giant breed, the amount of paw surface touching toxic substances is enormous, but dogs of ALL sizes need this protection.

I made a special meal for my babies today - Pup Wellington: pastry wrapped steak with mushroom duxelles and carrots with a side of mashed cauliflower and peas complete with gravy.

All dog friendly ingredients of course!

Needless to say they lapped it up! (And yes it’s impossible to keep a clean food station with mastiffs 😂❤️)

Digestive upset is the Grinch of the holiday season. It steals joy from both humans and dogs.

Here is my go-to "Tummy Tamer" recipe that works for my vegan diet and their carnivorous needs.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞: Baked or boiled Pumpkin or Sweet Potato.

👩‍🍳 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐭: I mash mine with cinnamon, a little maple, and pecans.

🐶 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐱: I keep theirs plain and mix it into their protein to firm up stools and soothe the gut.

Same pot of water, same steamer basket, two very different delicious outcomes.

Most people buy fresh herbs for the holiday roast just to make the platter look pretty. But as an herbalist in training, I don't use herbs just as a garnish; I think of them as powerful medicine.

We often look for health in a pill bottle, but nature put the most powerful preventative medicine right in the produce aisle.

Here is the science on why we both need these leaves in our bowls tonight:

🌿 𝟏. 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠" 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫

The Science: Rosemary is rich in carnosic acid, which protects the brain from free radical damage.

💡 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮 (𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧):

Ever feel that post-holiday meal "brain fog"? Rosemary improves blood flow to the brain and acts as a carminative—a fancy herbalist word for "stops gas and bloating."

💡 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐨𝐠:

You often see Rosemary Extract in dog food. Why? Because it’s a powerful natural preservative. Just as it stops fats in food from spoiling, its antioxidants stop your dog’s cells from "spoiling" (oxidizing). It is essential for cognitive health in seniors and gut immunity for puppies.

🌿 𝟐. 𝐓𝐡𝐲𝐦𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭" 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫

The Science: Thyme contains thymol, a potent antiseptic and antifungal compound.

💡 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮:

It’s a respiratory hero. If you feel a winter cough coming on, thyme helps relax the muscles in the throat and lungs.

💡 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐨𝐠:

Does your dog smell like corn chips (yeast) or have itchy paws? Thyme fights the yeast and bacteria that cause those skin issues from the inside out.

Texture matters! Whole leaves are tough to digest. Mince them finely. Sprinkle over your roasted veg for the flavor, and mix a pinch into their bowl for the medicine.

People often ask, "𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘧?"

The answer is simple: I focus on the medicine we share.

As a canine culinary Herbalist, my kitchen is full of jars that serve two species.

The biggest one?

We might get our protein from different places, but we get our resilience from the same fungi.

Watching a dog with cancer lose their spark breaks my heart.

They want to play, walk, be themselves, but cancer steals their energy.

Cordyceps gives it back.

This fungus increases ATP production at the mitochondrial level - real cellular energy.

Cancer is exhausting because the body is fighting 24/7.

Cordyceps provides the fuel for that fight.

Studies show 40% increase in oxygen utilization and 73% improvement in exercise endurance.

But what's even more remarkable for natural cancer support is that Cordyceps induces cancer cell apoptosis, enhances NK cell activity by 74%, and improves quality of life metrics across the board.

❄️ Winter Wisdom: Why Your Dog’s Bowl Needs a Seasonal Makeover ❄️

Baby, it’s cold outside! 💨🐾

When the frost settles in and the wind picks up, you might find yourself craving heavy stews, warm soups, and roasted root vegetables.

Guess what? Your dog’s body is likely craving that same shift.

As a canine nutritionist and chef, I don’t believe in feeding the exact same thing 365 days a year. I feed seasonally.

Just as Ayurveda teaches us to eat warming, grounding foods in winter to balance Vata’s cold, dry qualities, our dogs benefit from the same seasonal wisdom.

Their metabolism actually increases in cold weather as they work harder to maintain body temperature - meaning they need more calories and warming foods.

In my kitchen this week:

🥘 Slow-simmered bone broths with ginger and turmeric (warming herbs that support circulation)
🍠 Roasted root vegetables - sweet potatoes, carrots, and winter squash (grounding and naturally sweet)
🥩 Heartier proteins like lamb and venison (naturally warming meats in TCM/Ayurveda)
🌾 Cooked ancient grains like quinoa and millet for sustained energy
🍄 Medicinal mushrooms like shiitake and maitake for immune support

And the interesthing thing is that these same principles apply to our plates too!

When I’m making a warming butternut squash soup for myself, I set aside some plain roasted squash for the dogs.

That hearty lentil dal simmering on my stove? They’re getting warming proteins too - just from different sources appropriate for their carnivore needs.

Winter means more than just adding calories - it’s about choosing foods that generate internal warmth and support robust immunity when our dogs (and we!) need it most.

Think of it as stoking their internal furnace with quality fuel rather than just adding more kibble to the bowl.
