As the weather warms up and flowers start to bloom, many pet owners are thinking about sprucing up their yards – but did you know that sago palms (Cycas revoluta), a popular ornamental plant, are highly toxic to dogs?

🐾 Why is Sago Palm Dangerous? Sago palms contain a toxin called cycasin, which can cause severe liver damage, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and even death if ingested. Dogs are particularly attracted to the seeds or "nuts," which are the most toxic part, but other parts of the plant can also cause harm.

⚠️ Symptoms of Sago Palm Poisoning in Dogs:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Lethargy
Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
Seizures or tremors
Blood in the stool or vomit
If you suspect your dog has ingested any part of a sago palm, it’s crucial to seek immediate veterinary care – early intervention can save lives.

🌿 How to Keep Your Pet Safe:

Remove any sago palms from your yard or garden if you have pets.
Supervise your pets when outdoors to prevent them from chewing on plants.
Educate your friends and neighbors, so they know about the dangers of these plants.
Spring is a time for fun and exploration, but let's make sure it stays safe for our furry companions! If you have any concerns or need advice, our clinic is here to help! 🐶❤️

⚠️ Is Your Dog on a Grain-Free Diet? Here’s What You Need to Know

Grain-free diets have become a popular choice for many pet owners, but recent studies have raised concerns about a potential link between grain-free foods and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)—a serious heart condition that affects some dogs, particularly certain breeds. 💔

🔍 What’s the Connection? While grain-free foods are often marketed as being better for your dog, the FDA has been investigating potential links between these diets and DCM. Some grain-free foods may contain high levels of peas, lentils, chickpeas, and other legumes, which may affect heart health over time, especially when certain nutrients (like taurine) are lacking.

🦴 What Can You Do? We recommend focusing on high-quality, nutritionally balanced diets that support your dog’s overall health—especially their heart health. Brands like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, Eukanuba, The Farmer's Dog, and Just Food for Dogs have scientifically formulated recipes to ensure that your dog gets the right balance of nutrients, including important amino acids like taurine.

💡 Why These Brands?

They are backed by veterinary research and are designed to meet your dog’s specific health needs.
They focus on providing well-balanced, complete nutrition with proper levels of key nutrients for heart health.
Trusted by veterinarians worldwide!
If you have concerns about your dog’s diet or heart health, it’s important to talk to your vet for personalized advice and dietary recommendations. 🐾

📞 Call us today to discuss the best nutrition plan for your furry friend and help ensure their health and longevity!

🩺 Why Yearly Blood Work is Crucial for Your Pet's Health 🐾

Even if your pet seems healthy, routine blood work is a vital part of their wellness plan. At Delaware Animal Clinic, we recommend annual blood testing for all pets, and here's why:

🔍 Establish a Health Baseline: Blood work helps us track your pet's health over time and detect subtle changes early. This gives us a solid baseline to compare against in the future, making it easier to spot any potential issues before they become serious.

💡 For Young & Senior Pets Alike: Whether your pet is a playful puppy or a wise senior, blood tests give us valuable insight into their overall health. For seniors, it can be a game changer in catching age-related conditions early, while for younger pets, it ensures they start off on the right foot!

🩸 What’s Included?
We offer both Young and Senior Wellness Panels, which include:

Heartworm testing 🐛
F***l testing 🦠
Thyroid function tests 💡
Urine testing 💧
And much more!
These tests help assess the function of essential organs, catch parasites, check for infections, and ensure your pet is thriving.

🎯 Preventive Care is Key: Early detection of potential health issues leads to better treatment outcomes and longer, happier lives for your pets.

📞 Call us today to schedule your pet’s annual wellness check-up and blood work. Let's keep them healthy for many years to come!

🚨 Is Your Cat Peeing Outside the Litter Box? 🚨

Inappropriate urination in cats is more than just a messy inconvenience—it could be a sign of underlying health problems! 🐾

There are several possible causes for a cat to suddenly urinate outside of their litter box, including:

📍Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Painful and often lead to accidents.
📍Kidney Disease: Cats with kidney issues may urinate more frequently or in inappropriate places.
📍Bladder Stones: These can cause discomfort and lead to strange urination behaviors.
📍Stress and Anxiety: Changes in the home, like a new pet or moving furniture, can lead to stress-induced urination.
📍Behavioral Issues: Territorial marking or poor litter box habits might be the culprit

👉 What to do? If your cat is urinating outside the litter box, it’s important to get them checked by a vet. Prompt treatment can help resolve any underlying medical issues and ensure your cat's well-being!

Our Story

Dr. Dawn Karnicki and her team are committed to bringing you and your pets better health by practicing the science of Veterinary Medicine. Beaumont based Delaware Animal Clinic was founded in 1984. Since then our staff has been performing veterinarian medicine and compassionate animal care in the Beaumont area. Delaware Animal Clinic is a full-service Animal Hospital whose mission is to provide the highest standard of quality and compassion in veterinary care for our patients and welcoming, informative, and supportive service for our clients, while maintaining a superior working environment for our employees. Delaware Animal Clinic offers the Beaumont animal community emergency veterinary services during regular business hours, in addition to standard medical, surgical, and dental veterinary care. Because we have an in-house pharmacy, lab, radiology facilities, surgical suite, iM3 veterinary dental equipment, Tonopen eye pressure measurement, Cardell blood pressure monitor, Idexx Cardiopet ECG services, and intensive care services, our facility enables you to make one stop for your pet's medical care. We are open for appointments during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Our mission is to provide comprehensive high quality medical and surgical care to our patients and offer the best possible service to our clients. *NOTE* We understand situations arise in which you must cancel your appointment. It is therefore requested that if you must cancel your appointment, you provide more than 24 hours’ notice. This will allow another patient who is waiting for an appointment to be scheduled in that time slot. When cancellations are made with less than 24 hours’ notice, we are unable to offer that time to other patients. Clients who do not show up for their appointment or provide less than 24 hours’ notice of cancellation will be considered a NO SHOW. Clients who do this three (3) or more times in a 12 month period will be required to pre-pay the examination fee in order to book any future appointments. We understand that unavoidable circumstances may cause you to cancel within 24 hours. Fees in this instance may be waived but only with management approval. Our practice firmly believes that a good DVM/client relationship is based upon understanding and good communication. Questions about our NO SHOW policy should be directed to Judith at 409-892-2821.
