Be safe in the summer heat and protect those paw pads!

With the temperatures rising, we need to ensure that our pets are safe. It is not just about making sure they have plenty of water and shade, but also stay off hot surfaces.

Sidewalks, patios, streets can reach damaging temperatures when it is only 77* outside. With temperatures expected to be in the mid-90's next week, you need a plan for your pets.

Here are some tips:
Walk in early morning or in the evening.
Water down patio when you let pet out. Keep it wet.
Place pet in grass.
Booties or socks.
Play inside.
Walk in the woods.
Test it before they step out. (hold hand on surface for 10 seconds to test heat level.)

Your dog or cat will follow you anywhere even when they are hurting. So just because they follow you, doesn't mean it is safe for them.

Gonzo is a service dog who helped a terminally ill child through hospital stays and doctor's appointments. Now, Gonzo needs our help to fight lymphoma. Ellie's Rainy Day Fund is urgently raising money for Gonzo'a lymphoma treatment.

Gonzo’s Mom is reeling from finding out just last week that their beloved registered 4 Paws For Ability service dog has lymphoma! She has lost her son, and now she’s fighting to keep from losing her fur baby. He’s all that she has left of her son.

If Gonzo could talk, he’d tell you, “ I was born to make my beloved Grady’s life better. My boy couldn’t talk or play or even sit up.
But we didn’t need any of that. We communicated just fine anyway. My life was being his eyes and ears. I let his folks know about his seizures. I was his protector and alerted them when Grady needed help. I was at every doctor’s appointment. I even stayed with him in the Pulmonary ICU."

Grady died when he was only 11 years old. His Mom and his faithful companion Gonzo both grieve him deeply.

Gonzo’s Mom says, “ I didn’t think I’d survive when I lost Grady. Now Gonzo is ill. He’s all I have left of Grady. Even now, he takes care of me and my 12 year old daughter. He’s done everything for my family. Now, it’s our turn to be there for him. I can’t begin to describe the depth of pain I felt in realizing I can’t afford his treatment. I spent everything getting us through his diagnosis to a treatment plan. We NEED him. He NEEDS us.”
