This has been a tough week for us. We knew via Blazeās owner that we were saying goodbye to him. He lived a very full life, from trick titles, barn hunts and a UKC Altered Championship, to name a few, and was loved immensely by his family. Five days later, Sheila Rae said it was her time, as well, much to our surprise. These two, and another brother and sister, all passed age 15 with flying colors.
Sheila Rae was named for a favorite book I would read to my first graders many, many years ago: Sheila Rae the Brave, and I would often call her that. She was brave and fun and game for anything. She loved our road trip to New York two years ago to move Aimee to Cornell. We camped and made a vacation out of it. She braved the hikes at multiple gorges and waterfalls, smiling every inch of the way. At 13, all of those rock stairs and steep paths didnāt slow her down a bit.
In her younger years, her registered name, Whippletreeās Sheās All That, was often switched (mostly by Shari and Aimee) to Whippletreeās Sheās A Brat. She could be a handful. I started herding with her when she was young. She was pretty headstrong and got her share of āthank youā calls. Herding got put on hold with all of the horse shows we were doing. Her mom and grandma had earned their CH and WTCHās and she definitely had the talent and drive to do it, as well. Sheila Rae earned the CH easily. We just never got back to going for the WTCH. When she was 12 1/2, we did get a Started Sheep Title on her. I told her I owed it to her. Plus she was a little more willing to listen, sort of. Besides, who argues with a nearly 13 year old dog about whether she really needs to put the sheep through the center panel twice on course H?
My favorite nickname: Sheza Rae of Sunshine. She was. She was always happy and looked forward to our pasture walks every evening. That was her explore time. Weād often have to wait for her to lope along and catch up to us but we didnāt mind. The other dogs learned to be patient and wait for āthe old oneā, another name that we fondly called her.
She was a wonderful mother to Mischief, obligingly tolerated when her other kids, Bindi and Leeland, came to visit, and totally doted on her only granddaughter, Ivy.
Sheila Rae and Blaze, you are both greatly missed. 15 1/2 years went far too fast.
