🚨 Advisory: Fire Blankets & EV Fires 🚨

The has issued a critical Safety Advisory urging firefighters NOT to use fire blankets on electric vehicle (EV) fires involving the battery.
🔻 Why?
Although fire blankets can smother flames by cutting off oxygen, they do not stop thermal runaway within EV batteries. This can lead to a dangerous buildup of flammable gases like hydrogen beneath the blanket—posing a serious explosion hazard, especially in confined spaces like parking garages.

📌 Key Takeaways:

❌ Do not use fire blankets on EV battery fires.
✅ Water application remains the safest and most effective initial suppression method.
🔥 Watch for signs of battery involvement: flames from undercarriage or wheel wells, jetting, hissing, popping, or repeated reignition.

The IAFF continues to work alongside UL FSRI and the NFPA to develop science-backed strategies for safely managing EV incidents.

We remember on this day, and everyday, what they accomplished and sacrificed upon the alter of freedom. Below was the order of the day…

Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of N**i tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the N**i triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

- General Dwight D Eisenhower

And that’s a wrap! “Mayday May” was another training success for the 3571 members. To hear a mayday called on the fireground is something no firefighter ever wants to have happen in their career but, we must always be ready and have the knowledge to save one of our own. Each week this month, members worked on basic RIT maneuvers that all built up to a multi company scenario that was performed at the training tower. Using a fog machine to create smoky conditions members had to rescue victims and the RIT crew had to rescue a downed firefighter. This month is one of the toughest training months but we wouldn’t trade it for anything! Great job by everyone.
