🐾 What is TNR and Why Do Cats Go Back? 🐾
At Star City TNR and Rescue, one of our main missions is Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). If you’ve never heard of it, here’s the breakdown:
1️⃣ We Trap unowned outdoor cats (aka community or feral cats) in a safe, humane way.
2️⃣ We Neuter/Spay them to stop overpopulation. They’re also vaccinated and get a small ear tip so people know they’ve been fixed.
3️⃣ We Return them to the same spot they came from, where they’re familiar and have established territory.
🎯 Why put them back?
•Feral cats aren’t indoor cats. They’re not socialized to humans, so forcing them to live indoors isn’t good for them.
•Taking them away doesn’t fix the problem. Removing cats creates a “vacuum effect”—other unaltered cats just move in, and the breeding starts all over again. TNR stops this by keeping sterilized cats in place.
•TNR stabilizes colonies. Fixed cats are healthier, calmer, and no longer reproducing, which helps reduce the population over time.
⁉️ What about kittens or friendly cats?
If we catch kittens or community cats that are already socialized, we try to find them homes! But here’s the catch—we can’t do that without fosters and adopters. Without safe places for them to stay, we sometimes have to return even the friendly ones.
✨ How can you help?
Fostering or adopting saves lives and frees up space so we can help more cats.
TNR is a humane and effective way to reduce the stray cat population, improve the quality of life for feral cats, reduce and give adoptable cats the opportunity for a brighter future. Together, we can make Roanoke a safer, more compassionate place for our feline friends.
