Accidents happen. When pets are lost, it can be incredibly stressful trying to find them. On the flip side, finding a stray pet is equally challenging in knowing what to do. Visit our Lost & Found Pets page for tips and information: https://whiteriverhumanesociety.org/lost-%26-found-pets

Thank you to the Lawrence County Community Foundation for your continued support of our shelter and the pets in our care.

The White River Humane Society received an LCCF Vision Grant for operational expenses. In 2024 the White River Human Society housed over $1,000 animals. Their staff, Board, and volunteers have big hearts and provide a vital service to our furry friends and our community. We have 90 animals that need to be fed and tended to, but we need at least 1 volunteer to assist Sarah at the shelter today at noon.

Volunteers are required to sign a liability waiver to be on the premises. We simply need help to make sure the animals receive the care they need and to lend a hand in accomplishing the essential tasks. You will not be asked to walk dogs, clean kennels, etc.

We are aware of the travel advisory, however WRHS is an essential business as the animals have to have daily care. We are unable to monitor and respond to comments in a timely manner, so please only contact Sarah if you're able to provide assistance.

๐ŸŒจ๏ธ COLD WEATHER IS COMING! โ„๏ธ
Next weekโ€™s forecast brings highs in the 20s and lows in the negative numbersโ€”it's crucial to prepare outdoor pets for the cold snap. ๐Ÿพ
๐Ÿก BRING THEM INSIDE
The safest place for pets during freezing weather is indoors. Some breeds, like Huskies, have thick coats that can handle the cold better, but othersโ€”like Pit mixes, puppies, and elderly or sick dogsโ€”are at high risk and need extra care.
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ PROVIDE SHELTER
If bringing pets inside isnโ€™t an option:
Ensure they have access to an insulated doghouse, garage, or shed to protect them from freezing temperatures.
Dogs accustomed to milder climates or indoor living should never be left outside in freezing conditions.
๐Ÿงธ INSULATE SHELTER PROPERLY
Use straw (not hay) as bedding inside doghouses. Straw is a great insulator and allows dogs to burrow for warmth.
Avoid using blanketsโ€”they retain moisture, which can worsen the cold.
Make sure all insulation and bedding is dry to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
๐Ÿšซ AVOID HEAT LAMPS
While it might seem like a good idea, heat lamps inside doghouses are a major fire hazard and can cause serious injuries or burns. Stick to safe, non-electric methods of insulation.
๐Ÿ• Help your pets stay warm and safe! Thank you for taking the time to prepare for the cold snap and protect your furry family members.

Hello friends ๐Ÿ‘‹. We would appreciate donations of dogs treats and wet/canned dog food at this time. We prefer the brands and styles listed below. Due to digestive issues we ask that you do not donate items that are lower quality (cheaper product) than these items, although you can also donate items that are higher quality if you choose. Medium size treats work best for us in a shelter environment.

Thank you for caring and supporting WRHS and our shelter pets. Shop our wishlists:

Our Mission

White River Humane Society is a nonprofit organization established in 1975. Our mission is to help unwanted and abandoned animals in our community by providing them shelter and care, providing information and opportunities to the public concerning spaying/neutering and micro-chipping their animals, and ensuring that every animal that leaves the shelter is altered. As a pro-life shelter, WRHS strives to increase our save rate, where one day, no cat or dog will be left unwanted and without a home.
