Monitoring a patient as they wake from anesthesia is just as crucial as monitoring them during the anesthetic procedure. The two most common times for a negative reaction to anesthesia are during induction and during recovery, which is why we employ a multi-faceted approach to the recovery process.

The first stage of recovery occurs in the operating room, once the patient is removed from gas anesthesia and weaned off injectable anesthesia. In the operating room, we monitor their ECG, end-tidal CO₂, oxygen perfusion, blood pressure, temperature, respiration, gum color, pain indicators, and hydration status.

Once the patient is extubated and stable enough to move to the ICU, we continue to monitor their vitals closely until they are fully conscious and resting comfortably.

Forrest is using our ultrasound to guide his needle into the pocket of fluid that has accumulated around the lungs, inhibiting the patient’s ability to breathe.

What is Thoracocentesis?

Thoracocentesis is a medical procedure used to remove excess fluid or air from the chest cavity of your dog or cat. This helps relieve pressure on the lungs and allows them to expand properly, which is crucial for your pet’s breathing and overall comfort.

This procedure is typically performed when a dog is experiencing difficulty breathing due to:
- Fluid buildup (e.g., from heart failure, infection, or injury)
- Air trapped in the chest cavity (e.g., from trauma or certain lung diseases)

Thoracocentesis can be a crucial step in diagnosing the underlying cause of your dog's symptoms and providing immediate relief, helping them breathe easier and improving their overall well-being.
