*Urgent*

We have been presented with a dog who was hit by a car and found on the side of the Mass Pike - Ludlow Exit in the Eastbound lane.

The pup is in very critical condition and there is no microchip or collar. It appears to be a beagle or beagle/mix. Color is brown and white.

Please help us spread this widely quickly. We do have photos of the fella. Please call the office at 413-323-9201 if you have any information. Time is critical.

Thank you

How cold is too cold to ride my horse? We often are asked this question during cold snaps like the one we're currently experiencing.

The effects of cold weather on equine airways have actually been researched to a degree, with enough negative effects seen to reconsider just forging ahead despite the temperatures.

1) Horses breathing 25 degree F air during a sub maximal exercise session on a treadmill showed an influx of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) and inflammatory cytokine substances for up to 48 hours after the session, and researchers suggested this altered immunological responses enough to potentially predispose them to infection with viruses, etc. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17269885/

2) Another study shows exercise even in the 40 degree range can cause some damage to the mucosal tissue of airways as assessed by sampling of fluid in the airways. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12405726/

It's also known that human athletes (such as skiiers) who routinely exercise in cold weather are predisposed to a type of asthma from chronic insults to their lung and airway tissues.

So how do we extrapolate these findings to our own equine athletes? It's probably fine to walk your horses under saddle even in quite cold weather, but avoiding strenuous exercise below freezing makes sense, especially for horses with a predisposition towards asthma or other respiratory issues. Additionally, watch out for dusty arenas (often the case in the winter when it's too cold to water them) because the effect of inhaling dust on top of compromised immunity from cold air can compound the problem!

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING (A FOAL) 🐴

If your mare has made it through 11 months of pregnancy, you're almost there. Labor and delivery, while momentous, are generally uncomplicated — however, being a prepared and informed owner will help you keep your anxiety in check so you can assist the new mother and foal get off to a great start.

Here are some things you can do to prepare for the arrival of the foal:

• Consult with your veterinarian well in advance of the birth. Know how to reach your regular veterinarian after hours and ask about a back-up or referring veterinarian in case your regular horse doctor is not available.

• Clean and disinfect the stall as thoroughly as possible. Provide adequate bedding.

• Wash the mare's udder, v***a and hindquarters with a mild soap and rinse thoroughly.

• Wrap the mare's tail with a clean wrap when you observe the first stage of labor. Be sure that the wrap is not applied too tightly or left on too long, as it can cut off circulation and permanently damage the tail.

• Time each stage of labor, to help you keep accurate track of the mare's progress. Take written notes! When you're worried or anxious, your perception of time can become distorted.

As always, these are general guidelines and you should contact your veterinarian for more information specific to your situation. Good luck!

As Vet Tech Appreciation Week wraps up, we want to share with you all just how important our vet techs are to us at Mill Valley! If you have ever needed a vet, you’ve needed a vet tech. Our vet techs are the back bone of our clinic. They notice when your pet is feeling nervous, and offer them a snack to ease the anxiety. They are the last face your pet sees as they go under anesthesia for surgery, and the first face they see when they wake up. They explain your pets discharge instructions to you, and go over every medication going home with you. They notice when your pet is feeling a bit cold, and give them a warm blanket and heating pads. They administer medications, treatments, meals (the one they noticed is your pets favorite), love, patience, snuggles and so much more. We are SO lucky to have each and every one of our amazing technicians!! This week was spent celebrating them and all of the amazing work that they do. Without them, our clinic could not function! ❤️
