Another important message about the heat, especially the note below the dog photo!
The next few days are going to be brutally hot and it's important we take extra care to make sure our pets are safe. The Humane Society of the United States has offered these tips:
1. NEVER LEAVE YOUR PETS IN A PARKED CAR.
2. LIMIT EXERCISE ON HOT DAYS. A dog's feet are extremely vulnerable to injury from hot pavement-if you cannot keep the back of your hand on the pavement for more than 7 seconds, your dog should not be on the sidewalk. Additionally, their paw pads are one of the most important ways they expel heat. Take them short distances, offer lots of water, and let them rest in shade.
3. PROVIDE AMPLE SHADE AND WATER.
4. WATCH FOR SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE. Some signs of heatstroke are heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure and unconsciousness.
