Waterhose is a good accessory to move along a snake you don’t want around!

Teach your kids the different snakes you have around, which ones to admire from a distance and which ones are safe to handle.

It’s not difficult to leave these beautiful creatures alone, and I understand the stigma that has been passed down the generations but we need to do better for our kids!

Especially the danger noodles, they don’t seek out humans to bite, the humans tend to bother them and they react.

We had a gorgeous juvenile Carolina Pigmy Rattlesnake visit yesterday afternoon! 😍😍
His caudal lure is almost grown out but I loved seeing the difference in an adult vs juvenile

Fun facts:
This snake is usually dull gray with a row of dark spots running down the center of its back and along its sides.
Individuals from Hyde, Beaufort, and Pamlico counties have a red or pinkish background color.
The pigmy rattler will sometimes have an orange stripe running the length of its back.
The rattle is so small, that its “buzz” sounds like a small insect, oftentimes barely heard.
The young, like copperheads and cottonmouths, have yellow-tipped tails that they use to lure prey.

We had a new experience last night 😂

So, normally when we go to bed we glance outside and close the wooden door and go to bed.

For whatever reason last night The Sailor decided to go stand on the porch and heard this awful commotion at the chicken coop.

So we go investigate and I see something beside the coop, and I’m like “there’s a creature beside the coop” 😂 because at this point around here there is absolutely NO telling what it could be!

It was… an adult Great Horned Owl 🦉

Apparently he saw/heard the chickens and assumed it was an open invitation to snag one by the window. Which theoretically if he hadnt had heard him body slam the coop he would’ve gotten in.
100% lesson learned so now we’ll close the coop door and windows in the evening 🫠🫠

I have a snake bucket list, and the Carolina Pigmy Rattlesnake and the Timber Rattlesnake have been at the top of my list FOREVER. We were putting trail camera cards out and we just happened to see something in the road, and right away his color caught both our eye and we knew what he was!

I straight up hollered, I was SO excited to see this rare beauty in real life 😍😍

We of course waited for him to safely get across the road from our pasture 🥰🩵💜

Red Earth Farmstead LOOOOOOK!

✨Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius miliarius). Venomous. Feeds on lizards, mice, and frogs and will sometimes eat other small snakes. Best to admire from a respectable distance. ✨

✨Three subspecies of Sistrurus miliarius are currently recognized throughout the southern US. S. m. barbouri in South Georgia and Florida. And S. m. streckeri from Mississippi to Texas. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission has listed the Carolina Pygmy as a species Special Concern and requires monitoring.✨
