The American Association of Equine Practitioners sponsored an event for middle and high school students called “Horse Vet for a Day” in Orlando. Students were able to learn about horse safety, dentistry, laminitis, colic, and physical examination. We hope to inspire the next generation of equine vets!!

Did you know, as a horse ages, the tooth root becomes shallower? This leads to loose and sometimes infected teeth that can be painful. Today, two senior horses had a combined 7 cheek teeth pulled during their annual dental.

Toothsome Tuesday! Two separate patients had extractions yesterday. The long tooth is an incisor. The other two are molars. Notice that there is very little tooth root? That’s because these horses are older and don’t have much tooth remaining. Horses’ teeth erupt (or grow) their entire life. When they are young, the tooth root is very long. As they age, the tooth root becomes shorter eventually resulting in loose (and sometimes rotten) teeth.

Mama picked a fight with the boys and lost the battle. We surgically removed her ruptured eye yesterday (called an enucleation). Horses adapt very quickly to having only one eye. She will return to her normal routine within a couple of weeks.

White line disease is an opportunistic infection of bacteria and fungus that invades under the hoof wall. The infection thrives in dark, moist, and anaerobic conditions. Therefore, treatment is aimed at opening up the infection to air (and keeping it dry).

Gunner, who is older than 30, came to us as a rescue in his 20s. Although he has fulfilled many rolls on our farm (buddy horse, little girls first horse, herd leader…etc) he has never considered himself retired. He believes age is just a number and now fulfills the job of senior ambassador of our teaching herd.
