Its Team Tuesday! Most of you have met Ashlin, our veterinary technician! She's been with us since 2021 helping keep the truck and clinic stocked and organized, running labwork, mailing medications, and assisting in procedures. She also takes the wheel so that Dr. Wilson can knock out office work while on the road. The wheels literally would not turn without her.

Ashlin has been riding horses since childhood in a variety of disciplines. She is a dedicated member of an equestrian drill team and competes across the state with her horse, Akashi. Wish her luck at her next competition in a few weeks!

Its Team Tuesday! Daria is our office manager! Raised in Thomasville, Georgia, Daria is a long time horse lover. She grew up trail riding and spent days on a pony farm nurturing her love of horses. These days, she enjoys towing her Airstream into the mountains and camping with her dog, Marley.

You may have noticed that our phone system has been upgraded. We did this so we can more efficiently respond to both urgent and non-urgent requests. Daria has been helping our veterinary team focus on patient care by triaging the non-urgent voicemails. Please welcome her to the team!

Hurricane Debby update: we’re seeing emergencies for as long as the weather will safely permit. Scheduled appts will resume Tuesday 8/6. As a reminder, horses should be affixed with identification. Turn out is sometimes best if your barn is under trees. Make sure to store water if you rely on a well pump and don’t have a generator. Stay safe out there North Florida!

Have you ever seen a horse flip its lip up and seemingly “smell the air”? Well, this is actually a behavior called the flehmen response. Horses will do this to facilitate the movement of pheromones into sensory organs in their nasal passage. It is often seen in stallions who are interacting with a mare or mares who are interacting with a new foal. It can also be a way that they greet new people!

Occasionally, the flehmen response is observed during episodes of gastrointestinal discomfort or colic. Therefore, it is worth noting if the behavior seems out of the ordinary or if the horse is pawing, looking at its belly, or refusing food.

Big upgrades are in the works so please be patient with us as we transition! Coming soon...

1. An upgraded phone system to better streamline calls and sort emergency, appointment requests, and non urgent questions to the veterinarian. This transition will occur in the next 7-10 days. If you have difficulty getting through to Dr. Wilson, please email us at [email protected]. We will have staff monitoring the email closely over the next week.
2. An online pharmacy. You asked for auto ship options and we heard you. This should be available in the next month. More information to come.
3. An updated website so that you know the faces working behind the scenes to continue to provide emergency and scheduled services 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

And most importantly, we will have air conditioning in the truck again starting Wednesday of next week. If you've seen Dr. Wilson and Ashlin looking a little sweaty this past week....they've been surviving (but not thriving) in this steamy hot weather as we've waited for parts that have been ordered to replace the air conditioning compressor and condenser in our 2022 truck (its a sore subject). In the meantime, please provide shade for our team to work in and we'll bring the fan 😅

A mama’s love runs deep… Patricia lost her foal earlier this week and today she accepted the duty of stepmom for this youngster whose mother passed away last night. A bittersweet moment for these two and a reminder that nature can be cruel and beautiful all at the same time

If you own horses long enough, sooner or later you are likely to face a medical emergency.

On March 20, join AAEP members Drs. Allie Catalino, Racquel Lindroth, and Nikki Scherrer for a one-hour webinar discussing how horse owners can prepare themselves for equine veterinary emergencies. Learn to identify problems requiring immediate attention and take appropriate action while awaiting veterinary care!

Attendance is FREE but registration is required; attendees are also encouraged to submit their questions in advance through the registration form. A recording of the webinar will be available if you miss the live event.
