Saying prayers for all my people, and counting my blessings this morning before getting out of bed. I am wealthy beyond measure. My wealth comes in the form of “priceless people” that come into my life like manna from God daily. See the picture below. Number 3. It’s my sweet spot, being of service.

I met what many would call an ordinary man a few years back. A client of mine. He was in his final hours of life here on earth. I was blessed to get to spend some individual time with him. He was a living example of a man filled with joy and love. I call him and others like him that I’ve met, my angels on earth.

Now I am off to go spread some joy while counting my blessings, and attempting to be a blessing instead of a curse. Be a blessing to someone intentionally, and then do it again and again!

I repost the work of friends and mentors on my business page as a place of reference for my own clients. Thanks Kashi Vishweshwar, K9 of Kashi for your post. So many things we can do to prepare the dogs and clients of the world. Thank you for your service!

We don't prepare our dogs for dog collars for those emergency medical circumstances. Atleast i don't. It's smart training to be prepared or alternatively i...

Music to my ears!

Music to my ears!

Can we please stop expecting that EVERY dog wants to go to dog parks, daycares, patio parties and have birthday parties with other dogs! Nobody loves dogs more than me, but I’m here to tell you that dogs aren’t human children. They don’t want to do everything a human child does. Breed can matter when deciding what is fun for your best friend. Your Husky may have the energy to run, your Retriever may want to retrieve and your terrier may want to chase and grab. So yes, raising them with kindness is paramount, but paying attention to their needs is too. I said it.

This mentality that every dog has to be “social” with other people and dogs is keeping my shelter full, my days long and my heart broken, because I see the best dogs passed over, because they wouldn’t do well at a dog park or daycare. Not every dog needs to like your friends. I keep my dog in his room when people come over, because he isn’t comfortable around everyone, and I don’t want to set him up for failure. Love your dog enough to respect her boundaries.

Your dog doesn’t want to meet every dog. The reality show you watched about dog training and dog adoption is fake, I’ve worked in television, it’s edited to create a good story, not necessarily a real story. Let’s stop these narratives on dog ownership that are SOLD to us and based on making money. Dogs aren’t a business they are our best friends. Remember that.

Your dog can be perfectly safe and happy without overstimulating daycare or doggy birthday parties. Those things are fun for some dogs, but not for all. I want to take my dog everywhere, I want to give my dog the things I would want, but for the love of dogs in shelters everywhere, let’s ask dogs what do they REALLY want?

Dogs want more sniffs, waterlogged sticks, a quiet place to decompress, a space to stretch their legs and you to respect their body language and boundaries. They are talking to you…listen.

Sometimes the best thing you can do with a fearful dog is take them out into the world and simply let them BE with you. Maggie was super fearful dog. Getting better now that she is getting out!

Well done Buddy! Buddy came back to stay for the weekend with me. He has been gone for almost 2 months. My test for seeing if clients are keeping up with their dog’s training. I knew Buddy was at the farthest point away from me when I clicked. Yep!! Clicker is loaded with dynamite! He came flying! Love it!

Good read! “Why does a dog do what they do?” There are real reasons. Thanks Evan Smith this gold!

Good read! “Why does a dog do what they do?” There are real reasons. Thanks Evan Smith this gold!

Whenever you are trying to figure out why your dog is behaving in a certain way, keep in mind your dog’s breed.

Is your Australian Shepherd or Border Collie barking and lunging at people on bikes out of fear or hatred? Or is it because they were bred to herd livestock, and they actually love chasing moving objects?

Is your German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois tearing up your house out of spite? Or is it because they were bred to have higher levels of drive than the average pet dog in order to work, and they aren’t being biologically fulfilled so they take out their pent up energy on your couch?

Is your Beagle or Basset Hound barking and howling at every sound they hear because they’re “protecting the home?” Or is it because they were bred for two purposes; sniff and make a lot of noise?

Breed standards give you a ballpark of what to expect out of your dog. But even dogs from the same litter can be wildly different from each other. Now, I’m not saying to blame every issue your dog has on their breed, because mixed breed dogs can have all the same issues. But, if you have a purebred dog, it would only be beneficial to research that breed and become aware of the genetic proclivities your dog may have.

Graphic, but a story of hope. More than ever I’m determined to push myself to problem solve educating the masses about the real nature of dogs and how to be responsible owners. This could have been avoided.

It was pure luck that she was rescued alive.

Seperation anxiety and Crate training:
Crate training is one of the most important tools you can give your dog when it comes to many of the behavioral issues. Having trouble with potty training, chewing up items, counter surfing are all unwanted behaviors that a crate can help remedy. Some dogs do not know what their responsibility is when we leave so they find things to do on their own. Dogs can become very stressed out when we leave the house creating terrible stress and anxiety. In our minds a “velcro” dog is good because we feel needed or loved but is horrible for the mental state of your dog. With the use of the crate, we can take away freedom (where bad behaviors stem from). We place them in the crate randomly and multiple times throughout the day. We want to create a happy place for the pups to relax and feel at ease. The crate training method is one of the foundations to creating a functional and happy relationship with the dog and the family members.

Everyone has a different dog story playing in their head

Over the last 40 plus years, I’ve had a sad black lab story from my college years, a blue Italian greyhound story that broke my wife’s heart, a litter of puppies story that helped me understand a little of what it was going to be like to have kids, and now a two Great Dane story that is currently being written. As trainers, we hope to understand what kind of dog story is playing in our customer’s head. It's a key element of understanding what is possible between owner and dog.
