We see you.⁣

We see how hard you work… How much you pour into your horses. Your family. Your friends.⁣ Your relationships.

We see the deep love and empathy you hold for those around you, even in times when it causes excruciating pain.⁣

You’re doing good work, and you deserve to be proud of yourself.⁣

You don’t have to be perfect before you can be content with who you are, and how you exist in the world.⁣

You are worthy. You are loved. You are seen. ⁣

Just as you are now.⁣

Love,⁣

This was the challenge for my student today. Not only did it put her hands in the right place, and organized her arms in a way that I could have never explained it better, it gave her a real feeling of feeling the bit connected to her ring fingers.

Distinguish the difference between what you WANT to do and what you know you NEED to do and then do what is right.

Do the thing that will help you reach your goals.

Do the thing that challenges you.

They don’t care.

That’s how I explain horses to potential new owners who inquire with me for advice. I don’t ever want to discourage someone from the adventure of owning horses. But I feel it is my responsibility as a horse woman to look out for their future horses by giving them the harsh reality.

They don’t care if you’re sick.
They don’t care if it’s 0 degrees
They don’t care if you don’t have the money this month.
They don’t care if you’re tired.
They don’t care if you had other plans.
They don’t care if it’s the holidays.
They don’t care if you’re at work.
They don’t care if it’s the middle of the night.

They depend on you. They need fed, every day multiple times a day. They need their stalls cleaned / turned out, every day. They need you to bust ice on freezing days, and bring extra water on hot ones. They need you to care for them when they’re sick, and they are FRAGILE. Seriously, they spend 75% of their life trying to die and vet bills are expensive.

But, it will be your greatest adventure. The right horse will care about you. They will care for you on days you need it most.

So, take lessons, come over and hang out with your horse friends for a day, volunteer to help them out. Make sure it’s something you want to commit to because they didn’t ask to be in your care.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

okay so, maybe two thousand and twenty-one wasn’t your year.

maybe you (or your horse) never lost that last fifteen pounds.
maybe you never paid off that credit card debt from last years unexpected vet bills.
maybe you never got that pay raise you were going for.
maybe you never fit into those kimes apparel jeans you bought as “goal pants”.
maybe you never organized your tack room. your trailer. or your life.

maybe none of the things you wanted to accomplish actually happened.

maybe you never broke a sweat daily. drank enough water daily. lunged that fire breathing dragon daily.

maybe you didn’t saddle up every single day of the year.

maybe you didn’t hit as many shows as you had hoped for.

or rodeos.
or jackpots.

maybe your best horse came up lame right before finals.

maybe two thousand and twenty-one will not go down as the year that will be remembered forever. maybe there is no list of accomplishments, shelf of trophies and ribbons, or a big shiny sponsorship coming your way as you exit this year, and walk into the next.

but maybe, just maybe,
you can give yourself a moment of grace.

give your horse some grace.

maybe, just maybe,
you can pat yourself on the back. look yourself in the mirror. and tell yourself you made it.

maybe, just maybe,
you can recognize that if you have accomplished nothing more than living three hundred and sixty five days this year,

that’s okay. completely okay.

because accomplishing those three hundred and sixty five days is a honor (and a feat) in itself.

you mucked the stalls. you fed the horses. you woke up early to make sure they were taken care of before you took care of yourself. you put in hours of hard work. vet bills. farrier appointments.

so kudos to you. seriously.
i am clapping. and cheering.
for you have accomplished something so big, that so many who are watching us from afar could only dream of doing one day.

you are living.
you are breathing.
you are riding.
you are here.
you are goals.

and the fact that you have made it this far (both in this year, and in reading this status), well, that tells me a lot about you.

that you are resilient.
that you are motivated.
that you are determined.

so, no. while those few extra pounds may be still hanging on (and hanging out).

and while that dream of running in the American, or down the alley way of the Thomas and Mack seem impossible...

you are here.
at the end of two thousand and twenty-one.

with a whole new opportunity to live a whole new three hundred and sixty five days.

say goodbye to a year that you have conquered.
maybe not in the ways that you had hoped to.

yet conquered, just the same.

and remember this moment.
this moment right here,
on the last day of december,
two thousand and twenty-one.

and decide. right now.
how you want to show up.

for yourself. your future. your goals.

there’s someone waiting in the barn for you, and they still think you’re a champion.

sincerely,
Kodie Ruth 💋

oh and,
it’s never too late to fit into them jeans.
