I got this rose from the long term medical care facility I have spent the last 14 years with, when one of the courtyards was being re-done. I missed out on the good stuff but grabbed this lady, not having much hope for her. She was in rough shape when I took her. Somehow she has started to grow and flourish. I believe I have had her 3-5 years? I cant keep track on the timeline. Maybe its heen longer? She has the softes scent but it’s very light and delicate.

The petals have turned more of a light pink. It was more white the first couple years. I didn’t think she would make it. This year she has 5 blooms on nice little stems. Hopefully with continued care she can continue to thrive.

I struggle with roses, they get pests and I like to organic garden as much as possible.

I wish I knew more about this plant and the history of how long it was a MB. I love getting perennial plants from older places. Old farmsteads often have really cool hardy varieties left long past the original family inhabitants.

Some of the things I have been up to. Lately Irises have been my interest in acquiring.

Wildflower of the Week - golden-star

One of our most anticipated spring arrivals should be blooming any day! Golden-star (Erythronium rostratum) is as rare as it is beautiful. A state endangered species soon appearing in southern Ohio, golden-star is only known from a small area of western Scioto Co and adjacent eastern Adams Co.

Only open on sunny days, its golden yellow flowers are also short-lived. Golden-stars are easily confused with its more common kin, the yellow trout-lily (E. americanum), but it can be identified by its upward facing flowers, non-reflexed petals, and conspicuously beaked fruit capsules.

Gladys Riley Golden-star State Nature Preserve in Scioto Co is a great place to see its namesake. In addition to golden-star, this preserve harbors other lovely spring bloomers. It also offers great birding and more than 2 miles of hiking. Visit in the next week or two and you've got a good chance of seeing golden-star in bloom! Learn more about naturalareas.ohiodnr.gov

Garden peas are the best. Admittedly they are not growing as fruitful as I had hoped, but still enjoying the first harvest. I was thinking about it being a shame to compost the pods, so I decided to look up recipes with the pea pods. I found one and tried it. Pea pod soup! It was passable. Not super delicious, I am not sure what I would add, or not add to improve it. I like trying to use things more than one way.
