šŸ“£This Wednesday is our first Live Sale of 2025 šŸ“£! Join us at 7pm EST right here on Facebook for demos on a variety of foraging toys ranging from acrylic puzzlers to shreddable items. There is something for every size bird, no matter what level of foraging they are at. Items will be available to purchase, or simply watch for some great ideas to start foraging from home. We will also have any remaining Valentine toys on showcase, too!

How does the live sale work?

During this live broadcast Iā€™ll be showing a variety of items. Each item will have a name assigned to it. If you want to purchase the item shown you will comment "sold product name". Weā€™ll only have a few of each type, so if you are fast enough to claim the item you will be invoiced for it the next day. We will be "heart reacting" to those comments that claim fast enough to get an item so you know what you won.
Remember, when you type in your comment it will show up automatically on your screen, but can take a few seconds to show up on the Facebook feed depending on how fast your internet is. We will be responding to those comments that are time stamped in the order they show up to our screen. Make sure to be connected to a good internet connection for the best opportunity to get your items.

At the end of the sale make sure to fill out the Google form we will be providing, so we have your email to send you an invoice. You can have these items shipped to you for a flat rate of $8 or pick them up in store. Mark your calendar and set an alarm! We'll see you here Wednesday night!

This week has been a tough one around here as we laid our farm dog, Bear, to rest šŸ’”. Bear was my parents' dog, but was very much loved by our staff, volunteers, and class attendees. My dad wanted to share his thoughts on Bear with you all:

The first time I saw Bear was in the garage where he had been tied up and more or less abandoned, as his owner had to move and couldnā€™t take him with her. He was a big black, scruffy looking dog, a Lab/Chow mix. Paula and I called Animal Control and they came out and told us they were familiar with the address and the dog, as he was a frequent runaway. Our options were to pay $50 and have them take him to the pound (where he realistically had little chance of adoption as he was an older dog and probably would be put down) or pay the $20 license fee and take him home. For me, there was no choice, so I paid the license fee, put a leash on him, and started for home, as we lived just down the street. I can still remember the sad look on his face and his droopy posture, as he was sure he was going to be locked up yet again, or worse. The first few weeks werenā€™t great. Instead of using the nice dog bed in my office, he preferred hiding in the dark corner of our front closet. He definitely preferred being an outside dog; he liked looking in the back door, but had to be coaxed into coming inside, so we fixed up a bed for him in the barn. He ran away a few times and we would cruise the neighborhood in the car and coax him back in, and eventually he settled down. Bear was a challenge in this new setting, having to get used to a variety of other animals, lots of people in and out, and 10 acres to roam.

He was curious about our goats and would bark and charge the fence at them, but once I let him in their pen, he finally accepted them and they accepted him and we would go out on daily walks together in the woods. We settled in to a morning routine of feeding the goats, the emus, and the chickens, walking the perimeter of our little farm together. The barn cats all loved him and he was very tolerant of them crawling all over him and sleeping in his bed. He tolerated the emus, too, although he was not too fond of them pecking at his feet. When the grandkids visited in the summers, he loved playing fetch with them and following them around. Each morning, he would greet the employees as they came in, with a challenging bark, and then a tail wag.

Bernieā€™s two dogs (Cooper and Elliot) were another matter. She would bring them over 2 or 3 times a week and I had to lock Bear up as he would bark and growl and try to attack them. Eventually, after many visits thru fences and lots of sniffing, I let him out and he tried to attack Cooper, while Elliot just ran away. After this initial bout, they all settled down and just accepted each other, which then led to becoming good friends. Each Tuesday and Friday, he would be waiting at the gate for his buddies to come visit as Bernie came in to work. We had lot of happy adventures in the woods and at the creek over the years. He was hesitant about the creek at first, but when the heat of the summer would bother him, he liked to wade in the cool water.

When we got Bear, his vet records said he was 10 years old, and he did great for the first 4 years, but this last year was hard on him. 15 years is old for a big dog like him, and he had lots of problems with his hips and joints. Regular vet visits and pain shots helped, but eventually he just couldnā€™t get up without assistance, and he started losing weight and having other problems. I like to think that we gave him a happy last 5 years as he got all the attention and freedom he could ask for. I already really miss him as each step of my daily routine is left with an invisible shadow beside me.

Different bundles may work best for different species but overall these bundles are good from everything from a finch to a macaw. There is also diversity in the uses so some examples can be: hanging the whole bouquet from the cage, breaking off bits to add to the food dish or even hiding them in foraging toys for some extra fun.
Each bouquet is different, but what may be inside?
šŸ”¹ Peppers
šŸ”¹ Amaranth & Statice Flowers
šŸ”¹ Mint, Oregano, Sage, and Fuchsia
šŸ”¹ Safflower, Oats, Barley, Wheat, and Canary Grass
šŸ”¹ Millets, Peppergrass, Pampas, and more!

All items are beautifully bundled with uncolored raffia, providing your birds with a safe, natural, and enriching foraging experience! All bouquets are $19.99 and only available in the store. My finch Bean loves the Indian rice grass especially!

Does your bird struggle taking liquid medicine or liquid supplement? I just learned of a trick of using a piece of freeze dried food, and soaking it in the medicine to administer it. The key to this trick is finding something your bird will reliably chow down on.

One way to determine your bird's favorite treats is to offer 2 at a time (one in each hand) at different snack times, and see which your bird goes for most often!

Looking to try some freeze dried produce? We carry Karenā€™s Naturals, which includes a variety of fruits and vegetables. For questions, or to place an order, message us here, or text or call (937) 848-4819. We can ship almost all products!

The joy of a simple foot toy is always evident when a Caique is at the receiving endšŸ˜! The Valentine foot toys that were made during our Day of Service last Monday have been a huge hit! These were simple candy boxes filled with treats, toy parts, and crinkle paper. Obviously Trouble approves!!

Are you tired of your bird taking apart a toy by destroying the string or chain that is keeping it hung up rather than actually chewing on the parts of the toyšŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø? You know Iā€™m talking about the big guysā€“Cockatoos and Macawā€“our biggest offenders of disassembling toys, destroying cage bars, unlocking their food doors, and wreaking havoc on the home! If this is you, then itā€™s high time to start making toys on your own and working to challenge your bird in their daily activities without making you crazy! We have a great XL bird toy making class coming up this Sunday, February 2nd from 1-3pm here at the store.

I was asked by several of our Harlequin Macaw owners to showcase toys that *may* last more than a few hours. Well, challenge accepted and Iā€™m ready to help you make two hanging toys and one foot toy during this class that will make even the toughest birds busy all day long. This class is $85 and includes all the parts and instructionā€“WELL worth the amount of parts included in these toys! After class youā€™ll have a one hour opportunity to shop in the store with special discounts as a ā€œthank youā€ for attendingā€“20% off all toys and toy parts and 15% off our frozen chop.

What better way to spend an afternoon than hanging out with other big bird owners and commiserating over our rambunctious birds?? Grab your ticket here: https://www.store.sugarcreekbirdfarm.com/events-1/toy-class-for-xl-birds

(Nero helped me design the toys, obviously šŸ‘‘)

Meet our January Customers of the month: The Krapfs

Our journey into the world of bird fandom began when my 9-year-old daughter wished for a budgie/parakeet for her birthday. Having had parakeets myself at her age, I knew what we were getting into and our family soon grew from two parakeets to five within a matter of months. They are the cutest little creatures!

Knowing that our flock would continue to grow, we searched high and low until we found the vibrant colors of a Sun Conure at Sugarcreek Bird Farm. I knew instantly that he had to be ours. He was so sweet and loving when we held him, and my kids fell in love with him, too. It was meant to be. Through the visits and communication with the store team, we knew he was destined to be a part of our lives.

From the moment I brought him home, he has been my little bird child. He eagerly awaits my awakening each day and loves to accompany me on my daily chores, perched on my shoulder. I couldn't imagine my life without my little Eddie! He's a spunky, rambunctious little guy who loves to play and snuggle with us. Sun conures are undoubtedly one of the most fun and outgoing bird species.

We look forward to our future together, knowing that they live a long time. I highly recommend considering getting one, but do your research to ensure itā€™s the right fit for your lifestyle. It's well worth it. We love our Edward and all his delightful squawks.

Have you ever noticed these weird spikey things in your bird's feathers? What are they?

Pin feathers, also known as blood feathers, are new feathers growing in to replace the ones lost during molting. When feathers are first growing in, they're encased in a sheath of keratin to help them get through the skin and to protect the developing feathers while they still have blood flow. Once the feather is fully developed, the vein will recede and the keratin coating will be ready to flake off. Birds can take care of preening this keratin by themselves pretty well once itā€™s ready, but if they're a single bird, they might appreciate some help from you on the areas they can't reach on their own (namely their head and neck).

Pin feathers are normal and not cause for concern, but itā€™s important to understand them so you can keep an eye on them. When the feather is still in the early stages of growth, the quill has blood flow. You can usually tell if the quill still has blood if it's darker near the base (or if it's a light colored feather, you might be able to even see the red blood inside, just look at this picture of Mandy, our Moluccan Cockatoo!) Should this blood feather break, the quill with blood flow acts like a straw pouring out blood, and often doesnā€™t clot well on its own. You can try using styptic powder (yes, it is safe to use with birds), but often the feather will need to be pulled out completely to remove that open wound.
