As this cold weather approaches here are some tips on preparing your herd for the weather!
We hope you all stay safe and warm this weekend as we endure these cold temps!
SDCA asked Dr. Beth Thompson, State Veterinarian of South Dakota, for a few tips when taking care of your herds in temperatures:
❄ Preparation is key going into the winter months. A healthy herd with a good body condition score will be able to withstand the cold temperatures and wind.
❄ Herd has access to windbreaks, if possible. Clean, dry bedding also helps if facilities are available.
❄ When dealing with cold winds and weather, a cow's intake can increase 15-20%. Ranchers will increase feed significantly, while aiming for quality nutrition.
❄ Accessible water. Snow can be a water source, but the herd will burn up calories if snow is the only water source.
❄ Minerals and supplements are helpful, too!
