We have had a lot of great conversations lately about Avian Flu.

This article proves that the Oregon Department of Agriculture knew that the cat that unfortunately passed from Avian Flu had a risk of exposure from their environment. But instead reported that the cat was "strictly" an indoor cat.

There is also evidence that multiple samples of NWN food and treats have tested negative for H5N1, the only bag that tested positive was the opened bag.

Reckless regulatory marketing stokes fear of raw pet food.

Did you know that dogs and cats don’t require carbohydrates in their diet? While carbs can provide energy, they’re not essential for your furry family. Dogs and cats thrive on diets high in protein and healthy fats.

If they don't need carbs then why is it in their food?

2️⃣Dry food needs a carbohydrate source in order to be made into it's kibble form.

I wanted to take a moment to address customer concerns over H5N1 (avian flu) in raw pet food.

You may have heard reports about a cat who tragically passed away, with H5N1 (avian flu) suspected to have been contracted from raw cat food. Here’s what we know so far:

Genome sequencing confirmed the virus found in the opened bag of raw cat food matched the virus in the infected cat.

This incident occurred over Christmas Eve, and Northwest Naturals promptly issued a recall on their 2lb bags of raw turkey cat food.

Regulatory authorities are required to test unopened samples, but as of now, no such testing has been conducted. Manufacturers keep sample bags from each lot specifically for this purpose.

The recalled food has been on the market for 4-5 months without any other reported incidents, and the affected lot consisted of approximately 2,000lbs of food.

While initially reported that the cat was indoor-only, evidence shows it had regular outdoor adventures on leash with it's canine siblings and frequently visited the store where the food was purchased.

All poultry flocks used in raw food undergo testing at the supplier level. The flock in question tested negative for H5N1 before processing. Currently, no testing exists at the manufacturer level.

All Northwest Naturals food undergoes High-Pressure Processing (HPP), a method, studies show is effective in mitigating avian flu in raw meat.

Why We Remain Confident in Raw Pet Food:

Commercial raw pet food follows the strictest safety standards with zero tolerance for pathogenic bacteria.

Raw food brands are often quicker to issue recalls and have significantly fewer recalls when compared to kibble.

We’ve reached out to all our raw food brands, and they have reassured us of their safety protocols and have even issued public statements on their social media platforms.

For Concerned Pet Parents:

You can temporarily switch away from poultry-based raw foods.

Alternatives include freeze-dried, gently cooked, canned, or dehydrated options.

I remain confident in the safety of the raw food brands we carry and will continue to feed Felicity these diets.

It’s worth noting that dogs seem to be far less susceptible to H5N1 at this time.

We will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available. We are patiently awaiting further testing.

For now, this appears to be an isolated incident, and our hearts go out to the family who lost their beloved cat.
