Pics from a page of air compressor system at a facility in Iowa along the Mississippi River. The compressor itself is similar to some I worked on when I first got into this business and this one is actually water driven since it was part of a lock system and used to operate the equipment at that facility.

Back then those belt drives were pretty much open with only the rails to keep you from walking into it but if you were stupid enough to reach in that area it was often unforgiving. Part of me is sad to see this equipment in this condition but part of me is glad it is still here to be seen even if only in pictures. The design was simple but it worked. According to my source it was installed around 1912 and the last inspections were 1968. Back then they were built to last there is no doubt, but I for one will tell you the maintenance required to keep it running was also intensive and costly in labor.

As times change so does technology but I feel we have lost something since then.... robust design that can take a beating and be rebuilt time after time rather then just thrown away.

2021 is just about out of here and I have some time behind the desk today just to give an update for the end of the year. As a small business and a one man operation I must say 2021 has been my best year yet, despite the ongoing supply chain issues affecting a lot of other companies I have not been affected near as bad since I do not rely on a limited number of suppliers. My ability to spec out the exact same parts or another that will get the job done has served me very well especially this year.

In June of this year I replaced my service truck with a 2017 Ford Transit 250 mid height cargo van. The added space of this over the old Econoline van I have used for years allows me to carry more inventory and as a benefit to my customers helps to eliminate the need for a second trip out to get them back up and running.

On a more personal note for those that know me pretty well, in March of this year I lost my boy Hank. Hank was a rescue dog that we have had for a few years and he lived up to the "mans best friend" you always hear about when it comes to dogs. This was a huge kick in the chest to me personally because it was sudden and not expected. Like all events in life, time does make it easier but for this particular one the pain of the loss is harder then most. But on an up note we do have a new rescue that now calls this place home and his name in Henry,,,, and if you believe in spiritual events in life like we do.... Hank is often short for Henry and we truly believe Hank sent us Henry to help deal with his sudden departure.

I don't know what 2022 will bring for any of us, but I am always hopeful for bigger and better things for us all! I am also looking forward to providing more solutions to my customers needs along with the best service of their equipment just like I have for years now. May you all have a safe and happy new year!

Recent job for a customer, at 20k hours manufacturer recommended changing the drive coupling insert as part of its scheduled services. I advised while we had this apart to swap out the air end shaft seal since we have it apart since it is right there. Another point based on knowing this machine well since I am the only tech that services it on a regular basis was to swap the motor bearings. Noise level had increased on this unit over the last year is why I advised this added work at this time.

Once they were changed out I cut the old bearing apart to confirm my suspicions that the motor bearings were indeed the source of the increase in noise level. This was a textbook example of what preventive maintenance is suppose to be! From a business owners perspective this is one of those jobs that can be at times a hard sell because most people would not have noticed a change in sound that concerned me. Fortunately for me this customer had another compressor that had a motor fail with no warning years ago and knew the cost of a shutdown like that can cause.

October 7th 2007 was day #1 for Morris Machine Services LLC and man has it been a journey! In 2008 my average service calls per month for the year were three, today I do that many in a day. So a week from today I start year 15, I guess I must be doing something right. I had hope that 2021 would be a better year and in some ways for me personally it has because of the lack of workers that is affecting most every business but also supply chain issues are just as bad if not worse.

One thing that has served me well in this current business environment is my ability to source on the shelf parts to keep my customers up and running. Key to doing this is the ability to correctly spec out alternative parts that are able to do the same job as the factory oem parts. This has been key to my success this year especially and has had me running at or about full capacity most of this year. So I would like to say if I could help you with your problems give me a call,,, but currently I am running a couple weeks out at best.

I want to again thank all my regular customers for making all of this possible, I cannot do it without you!

Got a call today from one of my customers that I service their compressor twice a year. He called because they had ordered a new conveyor and somewhere along the chain a box got checked wrong when it came to voltage of the drive motor. The original conveyor was 120 volt single phase and the new one arrived with a 240 / 480 volt three phase motor.

They had called a local electrician and he quoted a price to run power out to this location and all the other supporting equipment to make it work.... let's just say it was more then what the conveyor cost. I walked in, looked it over and said, rather then all that why not change the 1/2 hp motor and use the rest of the controls from the prior conveyor that failed. Well he just so happened to have a brand new motor on the shelf that was the correct fit and voltage, a couple hours later it's all hooked up and running.

Finding simple solutions to problems like this is what I do day in and day out. Now you see why it's Morris Machine Services.... I work on more then just air compressors for my customers that need it.

One of this weeks jobs, guy called me looking for service on an old Quincy compressor, said no one would call him back and he was worried his compressor would fail and shut down his operation. Upon inspection his concerns were well founded as it was already shutting down on a motor overload.

The discharge line between the pump and the tank had cracked and despite the customers best efforts it was still leaking pretty bad. It had other control issues that needed to be addressed. I ordered parts I needed for the repairs and was back on site less then a week later.

The factory thin wall tube that was used as a discharge line was replaced with a steel braided flex line and schedule 40 pipe that will take all the abuse this pump will throw at it. The control issue was addressed to solve the other issues with hard starts that led to the unit shutting down on a fault.

I contacted my guy this evening and asked how did the compressor hold up with the high heat advisory we had today. He said it ran perfect, never faulted once and doesn't run near as much as it use to. So if you feel you are being ignored by your service provider, give me a call!

I was out doing service yesterday at a customers location that I service on a regular basis and ran across a situation I have seen time and time again over the years. Finding water in a crankcase of a piston air compressor, this happens commonly when the compressor is placed in a non heated structure and tends to sweat due to quick temperature changes and high humidity.

The water tends to build up in the bottom of the crankcase and even though the oil may look ok, it is not. I post this because I have had those people that seem to think the oil your draining out of my compressor looks just as good as what your putting back into it. And bottom line is THAT is why we change it.... The last picture is what was inside one after I drained the oil, scooped out the layer of crud that was about a 1/4 deep, flushed it out and saved the pump believe it or not.

When you get down to it, two quarts of oil is a LOT cheaper then a pump. Having someone that knows how to spot this early is priceless when it comes to dependability and your ability to keep up your production.

Setting here in the office on election day getting month end done between days out in the field taking care of my customers and it completely slipped my mind that this week makes lucky number 13 years in business.... Now 2020 makes more seance in hindsight.

Given the difficulties we have all had to deal with this year all I can say is I hope we find a cure for Covid-19 in the near future but most of all I hope we can start to heal the division in this county because it is what is doing far more damage to our country then any virus ever could.

Just some installs made by people that had absolutely no intent to service these machines. The cost of servicing these for years will add up quickly.

01/18/2020

This week I quoted a job to fix a new install done by a company from out of town and I wanted to share some things that I have found are usually a warning sign.

This one had the local company measure out the floor space in the compressor room, not one person showed up to physically look at the compressor room or the facility where the air was used. No consideration was given to the actual demand and how changes to the system would affect demand. It was this is our "standard system" we install at all these locations.

In over thirty years of working on air compressors as a mechanic I will tell you this,,, there is no such thing as a "standard system" in a facility like this. Most locations have a unique set up when you consider sight conditions, environmental conditions, ventilation and temperature and humidity swings between seasons just to name a few. If the people selling it are only concerned with the size of the box that the box they are going to sell you can fit in it.... chances are it won't work as intended.

That is the case here with this facility, the old compressor system had a twin tower pressure swing regenerative air dryer, it was replaced with a cycling type refrigerant air dryer. And I know most people would say its a dryer whats the problem? Two things,,,

First is the pressure dew point, this how we measure the amount of moisture in compressed air systems. Sometimes painters will call it relative humidity but its pretty close to the same thing. The old air dryer produced a pressure dew point of about -40 degrees F. and that means the air temperature would have to drop to below that point for any more moisture to drop out of it,,,, essentially VERY dry air. The new air dryer produces a pressure dew point of +40 degrees F. Still dry air, just not near as dry as before. I have plenty of body shops that still paint cars with air of this quality but I hope you see there is a difference.

Secondly is the original air dryer used a portion of the compressed air to operate, that number is a calculated guess of 50 cfm and I am sure an engineer somewhere will argue these numbers if he knew all the data...... So now the system demand has dropped by approximately 25% of the air compressors capacity but they are installing the same size machine in a goal to save money.....

To make matter worse they installed a frequency drive or VSD drive air compressor because this is the magic bullet company's love to sell as a fix all. Now don't take me wrong, installed and sized correctly these machines can save you a lot on your electrical bill every month..... the key word here is "Sized CORRECTLY" This application given the current demand on the system they would have made out far better with a thirty hp compressor of this type instead of wasting money on a fifty hp compressor that is now considerably oversized, doesn't work as it should and will require more storage capacity to get the controls to remotely work correctly and have the possibility of saving even the higher initial cost of this machine vs a standard machine.

If they won't even walk in the door to sell you an air compressor.....stop there,,,, and call someone who would at least put the key in the ignition to see what your specific needs are.

This is one of those jobs I pride myself in doing, three two hundred hp compressors all over 100k running hours, dryers, filters, etc. Customer not happy with the service they had been getting, I took over and spent about five days on site to do full boat p.m. service on it all and to address other issues found as part of the service.

Stopped in today to see how things are going, the maintenance boss said the guys are getting bored since they don't have to keep filling them up with oil every week. P.M. service is always more then just changing filters and lubricants. Just because they are old doesn't mean that you have to accept they leak worse then the Exxon Valdez did. Next p.m. isn't till April and we have more items on the shelf to tighten up the oil leaks even more.

Took on service work on some big units, three two hundred hp compressors, three twelve hundred cfm dryers, in line filters, drains, the whole smash. All three compressors are in excess of 100,000 hours run time on them and twenty two years old.

It has been five full days on site to complete yearly service of all equipment, had one water cooled after cooler leaking was removed and repaired, one plastic end bell and fan on one drive motor replaced, and numerous oil leaks repaired. There is still work to be done with minor leaks but considering one unit was leaking about five gallons a week,,,, it has gotten better and I was able to identify and order parts for that on the next quarterly service to address that. We still have two oil coolers that are marginal and need to be addressed before summer returns.

For a one man operation this was a bit of a challenge but I am up for the task even monsters like these I am capable of servicing.

10/16/2019

If I have said it once I have said it hundreds of times, If you purchase a residential type compressor and use it for a commercial shop you may want to look at the fine print on the warranty explanation ,,,,,, because it changes quite substantially.

Yes a commercial compressor costs more, but properly maintained I commonly see these machines last 30+ years in service. When you factor the cost over the service over the lifetime of the unit it is not hard to see its cheaper in the long run.

10/16/2019

Had a customer who purchased a compressor and dryer from an out of state firm that also installed it. They expect me to provide all the information such as manuals and technical information for the compressor. They fail to realize the machine comes with a warranty and that any of this work must be performed by an authorized dealer of a product line I do not represent.

Its basically like taking your new Ford to the Chevy dealer expecting them to fix it for free and stand behind it when Ford denies the claim since the Chevy dealer is not technically qualified..... But yet I am the one being difficult here..... I went through this in 2017 and you can bet I will not do it again!

One from earlier this week, to small of service disconnect for the application and those are not fuses your looking at. It never ceases to amaze me the risk some people are willing to take to save a buck.
