Bellevue Veterinary Emergency + Specialty Hospital was established with one goal in mind: to be there for pets and their people.

Our veterinary oncologist, Dr. Koshino, works closely with pet owners and a multidisciplinary team to develop individualized treatment plans, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and palliative care. By combining expertise in oncology and a deep understanding of animal behavior and physiology, we strive to improve the quality of life and extend the precious time shared with beloved animal companions.

May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month.

One of the most common cancers in pets is lymphoma.

Lymphoma is cancer of lymphocytes (type of white blood cell). Because lymphocytes are circulated in the bloodstream, lymphoma can occur almost anywhere in the body. Commonly in dogs, one of the first signs are enlarged lymph nodes - the ones under the jaw, on the chest, in the armpit, and the back of the knee are the easiest to notice when enlarged. Other signs in dogs and cats include weight loss, vomiting, decreased appetite, and lethargy.

Diagnostics for lymphoma can include abdominal ultrasound, chest radiographs (x-rays), and sampling of any enlarged lymph nodes or masses found via biopsy or fine needle aspirate for histopathology or cytology. In some cases, additional testing to further characterize the type of lymphoma is sent out to a special lab to aide in determining the best course of treatment and give a better idea of prognosis.

Bellevue Veterinary Emergency and Specialty has ultrasound capabilities several times a week and has a pathologist on staff who can read cytology. This leads to a quicker turnaround time for testing and increases the likelihood of getting a diagnostic sample, as the sample can often be checked for quality at the time of sampling.

Treatment for lymphoma often includes steroids and chemotherapy. Radiation is also an option if the lymphoma is contained to one location.

Our first priority in treating lymphoma and any other cancer is quality of life during treatment. Many pets experience mild to no side effects during treatment. It is important to us that pets feel as well as possible and we are giving them more good days.

Bellevue Veterinary Emergency + Specialty has an oncologist on staff, Dr. Akiko Koshino. She and her team can help guide you through these conversations and with treatment options if needed.

Meet Dandy! She was lost and standing in the middle of the road, picked up by a fellow animal lover, and brought to our hospital. Because Dandy was at the shelter prior to being adopted, we were able to successfully her with her pet companion.

Microchipping your pet will provide reliable and permanent identification, which will give your pet the best chance of being identified and returned to you if they are lost or stolen.
