Happy Caturday, everyone! Smokey Lowman hopes everyone has a great day, and would like to remind you that there are only 19 more shopping days 'til Christmas ... don't forget the prezzies for all your good little kitties and doggos (even if maybe sometimes they are a little bit naughty instead of nice!) Of course, Miss Smokey is ALWAYS nice (just look at that face!) and deserves all the treats that Santa can fit in his pack! Smokey is a four-year old tortoiseshell Domestic Shorthair, and she has been our patient since she was just about two and a half months old. Merry Christmas, Smokey!

Did you know? Many snow globes are made with ethylene glycol, the same chemical used in antifreeze, which is highly toxic to all pets. If a snow globe breaks, the sweet smell can attract pets to taste the leaked liquid, leading to potentially FATAL intoxication. Be sure to keep snow globes out of reach from pets, and thoroughly clean up any accidental breakages immediately!

LOST DOG: Please be on the lookout for "Lexi," a Poodle mix. Lexi went missing yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon in the vicinity of Stella's Bar and Grill in Bellevue. Lexi is 4 years old, weighs about 25 pounds, and she was wearing a green collar with an orange/brown mountain scene. She is generally fearful of men. Please call the owner at 402-968-2059 if you have any information!

Today is National Tuxedo Cat Day! Show us your tuxies for Feline Friday! Did you know? A cat’s coat color is controlled by various genes responsible for a specific color. Tuxedo cats get their color from the KTY gene, found in pigment cells. This gene controls how much white color the cat’s coat will display.

As the kitten develops in the womb, pigment cells spread throughout the skin. Recent research1 suggests that tuxedo cats’ double color occurs because their KTY pigment cells failed to reach all of their skin during development. The areas where the pigment cells settle grow white fur, while the untouched areas display black fur.

What are neoplasia, tumors and cancer?

Neoplasia is the uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells or tissues in the body, and the abnormal growth itself is called a neoplasm or tumor. It can be benign or malignant. Benign neoplasms tend to grow slowly; displace, but do not tend to invade, the surrounding body tissues; and do not spread throughout the body. Malignant neoplasms, on the other hand, can be unpredictable and grow at various rates (sometimes rapidly), invade the tissues around them, and spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body.

The word “tumor” or “mass” is often used to describe the actual swelling or other physical appearance of a neoplasm. The word “cancer” is often confused with neoplasia, but only malignant neoplasms are truly cancers.

November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Pets today have a better chance of being successfully treated for neoplasia and cancer than they did before, thanks to advances in early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. And it all starts with regular check-ups with your veterinarian. Here are a few warning signs to know: http://bit.ly/2OenYrc

Colder weather days are coming now, and many of us want to make our pets look cute and help them keep warm with sweaters, jammies, and other clothes. Please be sure to not keep these items on your pet for long periods of time! No matter how well the clothes fit, they can still rub skin raw and burrow through fur to cause wounds. Even if your dog or cat has a thick haircoat, friction from movement can make collars and cuffs work their way through the fur and to the skin.

Fantastic news for the animals and veterinary staff at our world-class zoo!

The Bill and Berniece Grewcock Animal Hospital, a 32,000-square-foot facility, will be located on the northeast side of the zoo and feature "enhanced medical technology and species-specific care spaces," officials said. The animal hospital, which is expected to open in 2026, will replace the zoo's almost 30-year-old facility and help care for the more than 39,000 animals at the zoo.
