Friday Funnies with the Foster Kitten Project!
Wagtopia: TheFosterKittenProject
The Foster Kitten Project rescues orphaned and abandoned neonatal kittens. In 2004 Jenni found her first kitten, Samantha.
(9)
All Adoptable kittens can be found on our website at, https://sites.google.com/site/thefosterkittenproject/available-for-adoption?authuser=0
Our founder, Jenni Riha, grew up in a rural area of Springfield, Nebraska. She graduated from Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in 2001 with a degree in Veterinary Technology. Samantha was found right after birth, with the umbilical cord was still at
tached. With no momma cat in sight, Jenni took Samantha in and cared for her. Samantha was Jenni's first foster fail. After continuing to take care of the occasional abandoned farm kitten, Jenni found herself fostering more and more. In 2014, The Foster Kitten Project was born on Facebook where she could share her happy, and sometimes heart wrenching, stories. In 2017, Jenni found herself desperately trying to reunite a neonatal foster kitten with the rest of his siblings before they were picked up and euthanized for being too small, expensive, and time-consuming to care for. This was when the true purpose of The Foster Kitten Project was born. Jenni wanted to focus on orphaned and abandoned neonatal kittens. In 2018 she earned the not-for-profit 501(c)3 status, and The Foster Kitten Project has been saving neonatal kittens ever since. It is important to note that each kitten costs roughly $250 to care for. This not only includes, food and supplies, but we make sure each kitten is
- Microchipped
- Given age appropriate vaccinations
- Dewormed
- F***l tested
- Virus tested (Including FELV & FIV)
- Spayed or Neutered
In 2020 alone, we took in and cared for 139 kittens and 5 pregnant or nursing moms. By the end of 2020 we successfully found loving furever homes for 119 of them. Please check out our website, thefosterkittenproject.org, to learn about

THE 7 MOST COMMON VIRUSES & DISEASES IN CATS
One of the most important parts of your job as a cat-parent is monitoring your cat’s health. It is important to be aware of the common viruses & diseases that can affect your kitty. Knowing the symptoms of these illnesses, their causes, and how to treat and prevent them are the best way to keep your cat healthy. In the coming weeks wide will talk in depth about each one!
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Diseases (FLUTD)
Tapeworms
Cancer
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
Heartworm Disease
Ringworm
Upper Respiratory Infections
HEARTWORM DISEASE
Heartworm is increasingly becoming an underlying cause of domestic cats’ health problems. The disease is spread by infected mosquitoes and primarily causes lung disease in cats. If you live in areas that are highly populated by mosquitoes, it is important that you prioritize heartworm prevention medication. Talk to your local PetWellClinic veterinarian to find the right one for your pet.
Because a domestic cat is not a natural host for the heartworm parasite, many of the worms die. However, an infected cat may have severe inflammatory and immune responses.
The following signs may indicate that your cat has been infected:
Coughing
Breathing difficulties
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
Vomiting
Lethargy
Heartworm Treatment for Cats
There are currently no products for treating feline heartworm, but many cats are able to fight the infection themselves. However, side effects of this disease can be treated with medication. If your cat is infected, regular check-ups at the vet are important to ensure they are combatting the illness effectively. Please note that if your cat’s heartworms are not monitored and treated properly, it can have serious consequences on their health.
Heartworm Prevention in Cats
There are several medications available to prevent feline heartworm. However, it is important to bring your cat to PetWellClinic for a screening for heartworm infection before giving them any medication.
Regular checkups, preventative screenings, and limited exposure to mosquito-infested areas are other ways to prevent heartworm disease

It’s time to get this amazing mom her furever home!
Twinkles is a shy but very sweet girl.
She would enjoy a home that is quiet and preferably without other animals.
Twinkles kittens were born in a shed in South Omaha. It was not safe so neighbors took in the kittens for a few days. Once they realized how intensive the care was they called FKP. Twinkles was found and reunited her with her kittens in foster care. While in foster care Twinkles even took in an orphaned baby that was not her own. She is a wonderful mom!
They are all now ready for adoption !

Saturday Success Stories with the Foster Kitten Project!
Thanks to the Brentlinger family for sharing Goose’s story with us!
Goose, fkp Stefan. I found FKP through Petfinder, they had a few kitties that I thought would be a good addition to our single 9 month old kitten household. I was looking to have a cuddly, friendly kitten around a year old. Goose's pic caught my eye as I scrolled and read through. He was going to be at petsmart in January and I went down to meet him specially and then meet the others...unfortunately, he was the kitty that I saw being carried out to leave when I pulled in. I completed my application for a few others and kept coming back to Goose. Admittedly, I was frustrated because I kept not being able to meet the ones I had picked, so I set up 3 meet and greets, loved the first ones I met, but they were younger and I had my meeting with Goose shortly thereafter. His foster mom said he was shy and waited to feed him so he would come out. To her surprise, he grabbed a bite or two and then flopped down in the middle of floor. I was able to instantly connect with him and I just knew he was my buddy.
We packed up and brought him home! Best thing for me is...it was my birthday. He gave me the gift of his silliness, his squeaky meow ( hence the name ), and all the cuddles, face rubs, love bites, biscuits and purrs I could ask for.
He is still jumpy at times, but lets anyone pet him and omg I can pet his belly! He will get into shuffles and wrestling matches with Demon and Callie, his "brother and little sister" but he holds his own and ambushed them when he's feeling ornery.
He plays fetch used to be hairties, but graduated to pompoms and he will drag wand toys around and squeak at you to let you know he's on his way. He helps me work by knocking off my mice, showing his fluffy behind to my coworkers when I'm in meetings and then tries to shred the bills for me...with his own claws and teeth.
I could go on and on...I don't know what I'd do without him.

It’s a Kitten pop up from the Foster Kitten Project!
Born on April 1st, 2024 this little family was found in the Benson area.
Aloha Pineapple Fizz will melt your heart with his irresistible charm. He's a little cuddle bug who adores snuggling up with his foster mom, and his favorite thing is to greet her with a gentle purr whenever she enters the room. He is also a little playful bundle of energy who loves chasing after toys and exploring every nook and cranny of his surroundings.
Meet Mango Margarita, the sweetest little runt with a heart of gold! Despite being one of the smallest in his litter of six, Mango is overflowing with love and affection just waiting to be shared with his forever family. At first glance, Mango may seem shy and reserved, but give him a chance, and you'll discover a snuggle bug who loves to snuggle on his foster mom’s lap. But don't let his calm demeanor fool you—Mango is also a playful little ball of energy! He adores running around with his litter mates and chasing after toys.
Blueberry Punch has mastered the art of companionship. As soon as she enters a room, she's right by your side, greeting you with a gentle meow and a loving head rub. Her affection knows no bounds, as she adores snuggling up with her foster mom and even enjoys cozying up with her small foster sister during storytime. This delightful furball is a harmonious blend of calm, sweetness, and energy, ready to bring joy into your life from the moment you meet her.

Knowing the symptoms of these illnesses, their causes, and how to treat and prevent them are the best way to keep your cat healthy. In the coming weeks wide will talk in depth about each one!
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Diseases (FLUTD)
Tapeworms
Cancer
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
Heartworm Disease
Ringworm
Upper Respiratory Infections
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
FIV is spread through the saliva of an infected cat, usually through a bite wound. Symptoms of FIV may not show until years after the initial infection. Although the virus is slow-acting, a cat’s immune system is severely weakened once the disease takes hold. Furthermore, it compromises the immune system, making your cat more susceptible to secondary infections.
Because of this, it’s important to get your cat examined if they are showing any of the following symptoms:
Fever
Fatigue
Weight loss
Skin and respiratory infections
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Oral infections
Hair loss
FIV Treatment
Unfortunately, there is no treatment or cure for FIV other than symptom management. Our vet may prescribe treatments to help ease the secondary effects of the virus. These may include:
Medication for secondary infections
Healthy diet
Anti-inflammatory drugs
Immune-system-enhancing drugs
Parasite control
You have many options to give your cat a comfortable life for months to years. Work with your PetWellClinic veterinarian to figure out a care plan that is best for your kitty.
FIV Prevention
You can help prevent this viral disease by making sure that any cat your cat is around has tested negative for FIV and by keeping them inside to avoid any chance of contact. You can also speak to one of our veterinarians to find out if the FIV vaccine is appropriate for your cat.

Bon Jovi and W***y Wonka were brought to a local shelter at 2 weeks old with their 2 siblings. That shelter did not have any fosters available so they were brought to the Foster Kitten Project. BJ and W***y Wonka are very sweet, social and they love to cuddle! They were born April 19 of this year so they are 4 months old and ready for adoption! Saturday Success Stories with the Foster Kitten Project!
Thanks to the Dail family for sharing Melman’s story with us!
Meet Melman (FKP - named by a volunteer - his color pattern “patches” made him look like the giraffe from the animated Madagascar movie)
Our experience - Jenni and team are wonderful! The adoption process was straight forward and thorough. The amount of time and dedication put into each kitten is impressive and much appreciated. I first noticed Melman when he came in for his neuter procedure at the vet clinic that I worked at. He ended up not being able to have the procedure done that day, but Jenni overheard me gushing about his cute self and was kind enough to reach back out to me when he was ready for adoption! He had lots of other inquiries, but the extra thoughtfulness of FKP was just the encouragement I needed to adopt. So happy Jenni reached back out! Thanks FKP 🙂

CANCER
Three of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in cats are:
Lymphosarcoma - one of the most common types of cancer in cats. It is a cancer of the lymphocytes and lymphoid tissue. This tissue is present in the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, bone marrow, and GI tract.
Squamous cell carcinoma - skin cancer that can affect your cat’s ear, eyelid, or nose. Light-colored and white cats are more susceptible, but significant sun exposure should be avoided for any cat.
Feline leukemia - one of the most infectious viral diseases in cats, and it can be fatal. This virus attacks the bone marrow, allowing cancers to take hold. FeLV is easily transmitted from cat to cat through saliva and direct contact. Furthermore, kittens born to infected mothers are at a greater risk. ( no symptoms so get your cat tested regularly)
SYMPTOMS
Lumps
Swelling
Persistent skin infections or sores
Lethargy
Weight loss
Sudden lameness
Diarrhea
Dehydration
Vomiting
Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating
Feline Cancer Treatment
Common treatments include:
Surgery
Chemotherapy
Radiation
Immunotherapy
A combination of therapies
The success of these treatments relies on the extent of the cancer, and early detection is always best.
Feline Cancer Prevention
Keeping your cat indoors will help reduce the risk of cancer, especially FeLV, as they are not around other unvaccinated animals that may be carrying the viruses. It also reduces the risk of squamous cell carcinoma because it protects your cat from repeated sunlight exposure.

Saturday Success Stories with the Foster Kitten Project!
Thanks to the Contois family for sharing Woody’s story with us!
This is Woody (Originally Atticus)
We adopted Woody from FKP in August ’23. We worked with Foster Mom Jenna who is the sweetest gal ever and so patient with multiple visits, photo request and always keeping us in the loop.
After losing our amazing Gizmo 1 year before that, we felt like no cat would ever replace him, He was truly one of a kind and the love of our life. His brother Duke, who had been with Gizmo for 5 years since the age of 6 weeks, also thought the same. Duke was very depressed, containing himself to our bedroom, he would sit on the stairs and “hang with us” sometimes but he spends most of his day in his mom’s closet sitting on his favorite blanket watching out the window.
Woody has turned into such a special family member playing the caretaker role. We also foster kittens and Duke has never wanted anything to do with them but within a week of Woody’s arrival they were hanging out and have been buddies ever since.
Woody takes them ALL fosters under his wing as if they’re his own. He plays with them, watches over them, grooms them and snuggles with them but always makes time to hang out with Duke at his window. Woody gets very sad when the fosters leave so we have to make sure to always have them around 😉.
He’s also developed a special relationship with his Dad as Woody has Dad help him stretch multiple times a day. He will not let anyone else stretch him, only Dad.

Bath time is usually a stressful occasion for both pets and their owners, leading many to wonder—is bathing cats really necessary? To the relief of many a cat owner, the answer is typically “no,” according to Dr. Alison Diesel, a clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “In general, cats do not need to be given a bath by their owners,” she said. “Their fastidious grooming behavior makes this a non-necessary task, which most owners are quite thankful for.” Some cats may not groom themselves appropriately because of obesity, arthritis, or an underlying medical condition. But even if these kitties need some help getting clean, a true bath is usually not necessary unless the cat is especially dirty. “A good brushing may be sufficient unless there are fecal/urinary incontinence concerns,” Diesel said. “I rarely recommend bathing for my feline patients. There are certain topical products that I may consider for cats, like a leave-on antiseptic mousse if they have a skin infection, but a true bath is typically not recommended or indicated.” For many medical conditions, from fungal infections to allergies, a bath with a medicated shampoo can be a treatment option, but Diesel said owners should be confident in their ability to safely bathe their pet first. Beyond cats’ ability to clean themselves, Diesel usually recommends not bathing cats because of the damages it can cause to a cat-owner relationship. “The act of bathing cats can cause behavioral trauma, which may affect the human-animal bond if this is not something the cat is used to,” she said. “For an adult cat that has not had a bath previously, the experience can be quite traumatic. They may lash out, bite, and scratch; this obviously introduces safety concerns for the owners.” Although most cats rarely need baths, one major exception is for hairless Sphynx cats, which require bathing as part of their routine skin care. “For
Saturday Success Stories with the Foster Kitten Project! Thanks to the Kyoko Sterns family for sharing Rufus’s story with us! A “foster failure” is the lighthearted affectionate term used to describe when a foster pet parent permanently adopts the dog or cat. So, while it is technically a “failure” because pet foster placements are meant to be temporary; it is also a “success” because the pet has found a loving, safe forever home. This is Rufus , the “foster fail” and his families story. Rufus was one of the first kittens we fostered through the FKP! He came to us with an infected left eye and just so tiny. We took care of him so that his eye infection can heal and healthy enough to find the permanent home. But he bonded quickly with our resident cat Udon. He was the first one to escape the play pen, he was the first one to climbed on my son’s bed to nap, he is so adventurous and we fell in love. He is still adventurous and easy going. He is so attached to my son Liam. I swear he can hear Liam coming home from school because Liam told me that Rufus is always waiting for him by the door. He is also very naughty but he gets away with anything because he is so cute. He needed us and we also felt like he blended in so well that we needed him too. We lost our tabby kitty to acute kidney failure about 6 months before we took in Rufus and Rufus literally filled our heart and we felt we found “the one” again. I guess he came to us when we were at least expecting him but when we also needed him the most. Sometimes you know when you meet your perfect kitty 🩷
Saturday Success Stories with the Foster Kitten Project! Thanks to Victoria Lynne for sharing Bailey’s story with us! Our beloved Elsie Pearl, passed away at home on January 2, 2023. We were devastated. Lulu was the only resident cat and was in deep grief. Elsie and Lulu always had breakfast together. Lulu would wait over eight hours per day for Elsie to go for breakfast. My heart was ripped to pieces. I knew we had to find a buddy for Lulu and especially for me. I first saw Bailey (a.k.a. Pierre) when he was only a few days old on the FKP FB posts and fell immediately in love. He was bottled fed until March 4 and was matched up March 31st with a mama that had just delivered her kittens. I continued to follow his story and I was finally able to go visit him end of April. The first visit was not very good. Bailey had been given his much needed shots the day before. I was so excited to hold and cuddle him. When I brought him close to my face, he thought I was the shot lady and scratched my nose so badly, it bled for over an hour!! The 2nd visit went much better. From that point on, he is the most loving and dedicated kitty to his family! I thank Foster mom Shana for doing such an amazing job. I wanted Bailey to be an indoor cat. Lulu was both indoor and outdoor, but I knew it would be safer. That was the plan. Lousy plan LOL! Bailey always wanted to go outside to play with Lulu and was never truly happy until Lulu came back. I tried everything to keep him content, but with no success. I bought him a stroller with mesh cover & every ESCAPE PROOF harness with no success. The final attempt was in August. Bailey broke out of the harness and headed to L St. Without thinking, I ran off , fell & face planted onto a paver. As rescue hauled me off , I looked back and there was Bailey waiting to go back inside. I knew from that point on that being inside wasn’t going to work. Bailey is a wonderful, loving, affectionate kitty. He loves to play with Lulu. The two of th

Saturday Success Stories with the Foster Kitten Project! Thanks to the Heisler family for sharing Walt and Jessie’s story with us! Walt (Remington) and Jessie (Cordelia). In the photos, Jessie is the one with a bow on her collar so we can tell them apart. We could see their different collars when we first got them to tell but their hair grew in and over so we had to add the bow. Walt is larger than Jessie but the bow makes it easy to tell at a glance! It was a great adopting from FKP from start to finish. I appreciated the care that was taken in screening us as adopters. Knowing you cared who the kittens went to assured me that they were well cared for at te rescue. From the start, Walt and Jessie were very confident regarding our two resident golden retrievers who were curious. They realized they were harmless pretty quickly and became friends, engaging them in play, etc. Walt especially loves to play with and lounge with the dogs. They were also confident in their new home with us. They never really showed much fear and were both very curious and exploring from the start. Sometimes that curiosity can get them into predicaments, especially for Jessie! Walt is a little more reserved and assesses a situation where Jessie just dives right in. You can see in the video this trait when she got her head stuck in a Kleenex box! They love to play with each other and their favorite toys are the little spring toys and dangling fishing rod toys. They also love to catch and kill any fly or other insect that dares come into the house! Jessie is super loving and snuggly. Walt doesn't snuggle as much but when he does he will come up for pets and then just collapse into your lap. They like to be around the family and the dogs. I am so glad that we adopted the pair instead of just one. They are very bonded and love to play with each other, but aren't dependent on each other. I do think having each other made the transition to our home, especially with the dogs easier for t
Fetch, Drum! He comes with his favorite toy. Drummand is 7 months old, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.
Saturday Success Stories with the Foster Kitten Project! Thanks to the Kiefer family for sharing Poe’s story with us! Her name is Poe, originally Sloane. We adopted her in December 2018, after a 9 month old male kitten Prince found his way to our farm and adopted us. Our, at the time, 12 year old and 8 year old wanted nothing to do with his young, stray cat energy. He was so sweet, we knew he needed a friend, Poe! I did a Google search and loved reading the reviews about FKP and their mission of rescuing kittens that other shelters do not want to deal with. After correspondence back and forth, my husband and I made our way to FKP to look at the cats available for adoption. We spent a lot of time in the basement getting to know all of the kittens. There were so many, I remember thinking to myself it would be hard to choose just one. But then, this sweet little gray fluffball found her way to our hearts with constant licking of our hands. What I loved about the experience is the fact that even though there were a lot of kittens, we were introduced to almost each of them and told about their personalities. We had plenty of time to get to know the kittens and find the right fit for our family. When we got her home, we wanted her to bond with Prince, our newest cat. We did not introduce them properly because we didn't need to. They saw each other and instantly started grooming and snuggling together. She would often "nurse" on his tummy fur for the first few months. Poe also loved to play with the two older cats. She could read their energy and match it easily. She also bonded with our oldest cat, often the glue between the older cats and Prince. When our oldest cat was in his final stages of life, Poe was always with him, grooming him and snuggling with him. She had a tough time when he passed away. Poe loves cuddles, but only when we lay in bed. Everywhere else, she has too much to do and explore. We always say "it's a good thing she's pretty" because her
These are both BOYS! Trish has difficulty determining the sex on young kittens with little bits. These guys weighed in at 2 pounds 5 ounces. The black kitty has hints of brown behind his fluffy ears and a large white patch on his belly. They are now microchipped, had their first dewormer and first vaccination. Their blood was drawn to be tested for FIV/FELV and a stool sample collected to be tested for intestinal parasites. Now it is my job to fatten up their sister to make the 2 pound weight for all 3 to be eligible for alters.
This is a girl. She is 11 ounces. She is black with hints of brown when the light captures her colors from the side.

When it comes to kitten vetting, it's important to ensure that they receive a thorough health evaluation as soon as possible. We do this as soon as the kittens get with Jenni. This should include a physical exam, testing for diseases such as feline leukemia and FIV, and deworming and flea/tick prevention. It's also important to ensure that they receive the necessary vaccinations, including for feline distemper and rabies. When you take your kitten home it's a good idea to discuss nutrition and behavior with your vet to ensure that your kitten is on the right track for a healthy and happy life. Remember, regular check-ups and preventative care are key to keeping your kitten healthy! #adoptdontshop #thefosterkittenproject #fosterkittenlove
