Another heartbroken family loses their beloved dog to pet suffocation when their two year old Mini Aussie suffocated in a plastic container on January 25th. Sara Bradley writes, "I am so angry and horrified, it was also extremely traumatic for me so it is very difficult to share. For the sake of awareness and possible prevention for other pet owners, I will share.
We left the house for less than three hours on Wednesday morning. We usually leave the dogs loose in the house and that day they had free roam. When we returned home, they didn't come running or barking at the door and I knew something was off. It was nap time for the two year old so I brought him to bed and then went back downstairs. I saw Teddy and assumed Atlas snuck outside, but when I asked the kids if they'd seen him they said no. I literally thought someone had stolen him. I walked upstairs to open my bedroom door and saw Atlas laying there with a plastic Animal Crackers container stuck on his head. I was too late; he was gone. I will never forget for the rest of my life the sheer and utter gut wrenching and debilitating pain that followed. I couldn't breathe or walk, I couldn't stop screaming. My poor kids heard all of it. I couldn't get hold of anyone and sat unable to move, screaming for what felt like forever. My poor baby. I feel like I failed him.
My dogs are very mischievous when it comes to stealing the kids snacks but this is something I never could have imagined. I share this story because I want to warn and make everybody aware to make sure that bags, containers, anything possible that a dog can get into is put away and closed up. My life will never be the same and I pray nobody has to deal with this awful experience. I'm sorry I wasn't there Atlas. I will miss you forever."
All types of plastic containers can be just as dangerous as chip bags, snack bags, pet food bags, and other food bags. This includes peanut butter jars, yogurt cups, pet treat containers, Pringles cans, etc. We suggest storing safely away from pets, keeping lids on tightly, and crushing them before disposal. Please share in memory of sweet Atlas, gone too soon, so another loving family and pet does not have to experience pet suffocation.
