As both December and this year come to a close, I want to add a little extra to our "monthly recap" post. This year has brought many changes to Twin Creek Animal Hospital, to which we are very proud and thankful for.

- We have added two amazing doctors to our staff, who have brought not only a wealth of knowledge but fun into our work day.
- One of our veterinary technicians passed her national boards and became licensed this fall.
- We added another skilled licensed veterinary technician, a dedicated veterinary assistant and 2 full-time receptionists, all of whom keep this place running smoothly.
- We were awarded Best of Bellevue 2024 - thank you to all of our amazing clients who voted!
- We have upgraded various equipment and diagnostics that allow us to continue to provide the best care to our patients.
- We implemented a new online platform that allows our clients to access their pets records, schedule appointments and contact us easily through the PetDesk app.

We are incredibly thankful our clients, our patients and each other! Thank you to everyone who made 2024 special, we are excited for what 2025 has in store for us!

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Cats

You may have been hearing reports of domestic cats contracting HPAI in the news recently. Here is what we know:

HPAI is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects wild and domestic birds. The virus has also been detected in various species of wild and domestic mammals—such as red foxes, racoons, opossums, dairy cattle, and cats.

Most commonly cats are exposed to the virus through raw diets made up of poultry such as duck, turkeys or chickens that were either contaminated with the virus or sick or carriers of the virus. Other reports have been from consuming unpasteurized raw milk on affected dairy farms.

So how can we keep our feline friends safe?

1. If you, or any family members come into contact with chickens, visit a farm, or the county fairs and walk through barns, we recommend that you thoroughly clean and disinfect your shoes and any clothing items you were wearing as well as wash hands thoroughly before greeting your cats when you get home. Cats may rub their faces on your shoes or pant legs which could have virus particles or f***l material with parasite eggs, so best to just clean them prior to leaving them inside the home.

2. Keep cats indoors. While it might be fun to let your cats hunt outside, ensuring they are not in contact with migratory fowl that might carry the virus from one area to another can be good idea. Both the USDA and the Indiana Board of Animal Health tracks HPAI on farms but sometimes the migratory birds can carry it from place to place. (There have not been any outbreaks in Indiana recently, so it is unlikely to contract the disease in this way at this time.)

3. Do NOT feed any of your pets a raw diet or unpasteurized milk products. While the new year often brings with it a desire for what we might think is a healthier diet for our pets, raw meat can carry many pathogens, not just HPAI, some of which are zoonotic and can cause diarrhea in humans too! So best to stick with high quality Cat Food that we recommend. Please feel free to reach out if you are in need of recommendations, we would love to help you navigate the pet food aisle!

4. Here are links with further information regarding HPAI in our domestic cats.

The FDA is providing pet owners and animal caretakers with information about ways to reduce the risk to their animals of contracting HPAI (H5N1).
