NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center Giving a Leg Up to people of all abilities The center follows stringent PATH Intl. guidelines regarding its personnel, facilities, animals and paperwork.

The NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center is a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International Premier Accredited center, located in Whatcom County, in Western Washington. There is strict adherence to the highest national standards of safety of its participants.

In February we hosted classes from Whatcom Community College’s physical therapy assistant program and Western Washington University’s recreation program at the farm to learn more about equine-assisted services.
We always love having students out to visit our program and learn more about what we do at the riding center!

Participants at NWTRC learn horsemanship and riding skills in an environment tailored to their individual needs and learning styles. NWTRC offers instruction to riders of all skill levels. Goals are riding-skill-based, but individuals and parents often report many therapeutic benefits of participation. These benefits include improvements in physical strength, balance, coordination, mobility, self-confidence, self-control, peer interaction, and social skills.

Your donation makes a difference by:
🎁Reducing the cost of adaptive horsemanship and riding lessons so that families pay less than 20% of the actual cost of programs.

🎁Giving the highest quality feed, care, and training to our amazing horses.

🎁Training over 100 volunteers annually.

🎁Providing exceptional certified riding instructors.

🎁Maintaining our beautiful 5-acre site and facilities in Bellingham, WA.

Oakley is feeling very cool after getting clipped today!

Why do we clip the horses during winter?
🐴 Help regulate their body temperature and prevent overheating
🐴 Decreased sweating during exercise and play time, and shorter drying time
🐴 Easier and faster grooming
🐴 Prevent them from getting mud fever
🐴 Help with various health conditions

One of the highlights of our Bits & Bites gala was a surprise item at the end of our live auction!

Our newest program horse, Sage Canyon Tryggve, was desperately in need of a nickname that wasn’t such a mouthful. So we auctioned off nicknaming rights to the highest bidder.

The winner is a long time program participant, and she has chosen ‘Sphere’ as his nickname.

She picked it because Tryggve reminded her of math and trigonometry. We also suspect because he is a wee bit round too 🤪

Next time you are at the farm, say 👋 to Sphere!

With the ground being frozen solid and high winds today, it wasn’t safe for the horses to go out in their normal turnouts. So each herd member got to have blanket-free time in the arena to roll and move around a bit. Extra thanks to our volunteers who have been helping make chores super speedy so no one has to be out in the cold for too long!!
