Bideawee Mobile Adoption Event in Honor of Melissa O’Hara and all the loving care she gave to every creature she encountered.
Event is rain or shine. Even if you are not adopting – and we hope you will! - please join us to celebrate Melissa’s life.
Among many other wonderful things, Melissa was an avid lover of all creatures great and small; a cat mom to Whiskey, Blue, Skye and Dakota. She had a special gift with animals, particularly those who were disadvantaged. Melissa would never have perceived them as disabled, only creatures requiring extra love. She would pull over to the side of the road to rescue various injured animals and bring them to safety. She even had to get rabies shots from being bitten by a stray! She had an amazing capacity for love and was the embodiment of compassion. Her sister lovingly called her "St. Missy of Assisi". Doctor Doolittle had nothing on her! She dedicated her career to the loving care of animals. She started by working in shelters, later became a vet tech, working in animal hospitals, was certified in animal first aid and CPR and ultimately had her own pet sitting business. Her clients, both human and furry loved her dearly.
I love this poem by Nicolette Sowder as this is my Melissa, the child that made me a mom, the beautiful child that I raised:
"May we raise children
who love the unloved
things – the dandelion, the
worms and spiderlings.
Children who sense
the rose needs the thorn
& run into rainswept days
the same way they
turn towards sun…
And when they’re grown &
someone has to speak for those
who have no voice
may they draw upon that
wilder bond, those days of
tending tender things
and be the ones”
