Attention Clients and Family! We will be closed this weekend March 8-9th, as we will not have a doctor available those days for appointments or emergencies. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have an emergency this weekend, we recommend VEG or All Pets Animal Hospital in Katy for small animals. For horses, the closest options are De Cillo in Hempstead or Waller Equine. For cattle or small ruminants, Texas A&M Large Animal hospital.

Chorioptes bovis is a mange mite that infests sheep and goats. Commonly referred to as Chorioptic Mange, the mite is more common in rams than in ewes or lambs. In goats, the entire herd is more likely to be infected. The mange mite typically causes papules and crusts on the feet and legs. These mites do not require a blood meal like other mites, rather they lice surface of skin and feed on skin debris. There are no known zoonotic cases. The mites can be found on cattle, sheep, goats, horses and llamas.

We have seen several cases of these mange mites over the past month. It is a reportable parasite to the Texas Animal Health Commission. There are effective treatments against the Chorioptes mite. If you notice crusty lesions on the legs or belly of your livestock or horses, there is a chance you may be dealing with these mange mites.

While we love our technicians every day and couldn’t survive without them, this is a special week for them! It’s Vet Tech Week this week. We appreciate everything they do each and every day to nourish the human animal bond we have between ourselves and our furry friends. Too many times it’s forgotten just how many hats we all wear on the Veterinary side of medicine. Keep up the great work!

There have also been a rise in EIA (Equine Infectious Anemia) cases. This is a viral disease spread by mosquitoes or other blood feeding parasites. Clinical signs vary with severity but include fever, depression, muscle weakness, anemia, jaundice, increased heart and respiration rates, hemorrhages on mucous membranes, epistaxis, collapse, and death in a small percentage of cases. Diagnosis of EIA is based on serologic testing and demonstration of antibodies to the virus in blood. There are no treatments or vaccines.

Be sure to keep up with all your Coggins testing and regular veterinary visits. If you have questions, please contact our office and we would be happy to help.

The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) received confirmation of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in two Houston County horses. These are the first reported cases of the mosquito-borne illness in Texas.

As a protective measure, veterinarians and equine owners are encouraged to consider vaccinating their horses against mosquito-borne illnesses such as EEE, western equine encephalitis (WEE), Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE), and West Nile Virus (WNV).
