Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is an immune-system disease where the body attacks its own red blood cells. Sometimes there is an underlying cause but often times there isn’t. Signs of IMHA include pale gums, lack of energy and appetite, labored breathing and jaundice. IMHA occurs in both dogs and cats.
When we suspect IMHA we run bloodwork so we can assess red bloood cell and platelet levels, among other things. We can also run a slide agglutination test. A fresh drop of blood is placed on a slide with a drop of saline. The blood of a patient with IMHA will auto agglutinate meaning the red blood cells will clump together as seen in the video below.
IMHA can be managed with immunosuppressive drugs. Some dogs will recover and can be weaned off medication and some may need medication for the rest of their lives.

Here is our latest video of Harbor, out playing with another dog this morning. Please continue to share him so we can find him a home!
Anyone else’s ears itch after watching this?

This mare has mastitis (an udder infection). Notice how yellow and clumpy her milk is. We milked her out, started her on antibiotics and pain medication and she should be feeling much better.
Here is a video of Rocky playing with another dog. He is still available for adoption. Please continue to share his story so we can find him a home.
Rocky is a 3 year old male neutered pitbull mix. He was abandoned here at the clinic almost four months ago and has been looking a new home ever since. He is fully vetted and microchipped. He is good with other high energy dogs but seems to be overwhelming to more submissive dogs. He is not good with cats. Rocky’s adoption fee has been waived and A Better Way Training has offered four free training classes to whomever adopts Rocky. Please call us at 979-865-3664 if you’d like to come meet Rocky.
What better way to start a Friday than with adorable puppies?!?!?! 🥰🥰🥰 These two precious ladies are available for adoption at Brenham Animal Service and Adoption Center.
Our very own Aeson Sanders opened the 2021 Champion Drive this morning with the National Anthem.
We are so proud to be sponsors of this amazing event and are always impressed by all the heart that goes into it from the committee, the buddies and the exhibitors.
It’s fair week, y’all!
Lugnut on his walk yesterday. He is great on a leash and low energy. One lap around the park was all he needed. He is available for adoption. He is neutered, heartworm negative, vaccinated, microchipped and started on heartworm and flea preventative. Call us at 979-865-3664 to meet this handsome man.
Progress! We had two cats in our cat room this morning, one very vocal, and though Lugnut noticed them, his attention was quickly redirected. Good boy!!!
Lugnut is available for adoption. He’s been neutered, microchipped, had a rabies vaccine, is heartworm negative and has been started on heartworm and flea preventative. A Better Way Training has been working with him on obedience and commented yesterday on what a good dog he is. She has offered a free, private training session to whoever adopts Lugnut as well.
Lugnut’s adoption fee is $75. Call us at 979-865-3664 if you’d like to meet this sweet boy!
Lugnut’s walk on this beautiful Monday morning. I wanted to show how he interacts with other dogs. You can see he walks beside Wade with no issue and greets our technician’s pack of dogs like a gentleman.
We haven’t had much interest in Lugnut. He’s older, he’s a breed that can be intimidating and he’s a little beat up. But he really is sweet and, aside from his affinity for chasing cats, is a good dog. He’s very smart and is picking up his obedience training extremely fast.

Lugnut had his first day of obedience training yesterday. A Better Way Training has graciously offered to come work with him so that he will be that much better when he goes to his new home. In just one session he mastered look, touch, sit and walking on a leash. He also started leave it and down. Such a smart boy!
