Finding a trainer can be hard…by the time you find someone with a great track record, extensive resume, nice facility, within budget, and close to you it can be exhausting!

BUT it doesn’t have to be! If you’re looking for a trainer, here’s why you should pick us🙋‍♀️

✅ Our staff has OVER 70 years of combined horse experience!
✅ Our barn is family run and we have known our wonderful assistant trainer for 16+ years! Rest easy knowing that your horse will always be taken care of and our staff knows each and every horse on a personal level!
✅ We are located at a beautiful private facility! Bye bye drama and crowds! We have 10 stalls, hot/cold washrack, round pen, indoor arena, outdoor arena, multiple turn out pens, and lots of pasture!
✅ Our horses are turned out daily except in nasty weather🥶 Even if it is cold, they get to play around in our indoor! We are big believers in horses being horses here!
✅ Our head trainer, Jentry, is an AQHA Reserve World Champion, multiple PRCA Rodeo winner, numerous pro rodeo placings, numerous race wins, average winner, multiple AQHA World top fives/tens, multiple AQHA Congress Reserve Championships, numerous AQHA Congress top fives/tens, and has been coaching for the last 5+ years! Jentry has been riding and competing her whole life and has an extensive resume; these are just a handful of her accomplishments! When you ride with us, you know you are getting proven expertise!
✅ Got a stud? No problem! We currently have three stallions in our program and welcome them! Jentry has lots of experience with studs and our facility is set up to accommodate them!
✅ Needing a proven consignment program? We got you! Jentry sold about 20 horses just last year and has brokered sales well into the six figures! We take the hassle out of it so all you have to do is agree to a price, sign a bill of sale, and get your money!
✅ Location, Location, Location! We are located just 20 min NW of Fort Collins, CO making us easily accessible for those from northern CO and southern WY. We have also had many out of state clients and welcome you from any part of the country!
✅ We are a small barn. When Jentry started training, one of her primary goals was to keep the barn small and client focused. Why? She had seen how horses and clients slipped through the cracks at the larger barns when they didn’t have the most money, best horse, or most talent. Because we are small, we know every horse in our program on an intimate level and are able to put our clients dreams first! Bye bye factory type programs where you never know who is riding your horse or how they’re progressing!
✅Needing help at races? We got you! While it is still taboo in barrel racer land to have a trainer, we are trying to change that. We have always offered coaching at races, lessons, and clinics in order to put YOU first!
✅ Our clients are family. Many of our clients are repeat customers and we often stay in touch with clients from years past! Why? Because you’re not just a number here, you are an integral part of our team and we are genuinely invested in your success!
✅Long term and short term success. We offer long term training for clients wanting a hands off experience or those with Futurity c**ts! For those that need short term help, we’ve got you covered there too with 60 and 90 day options!
✅The learning never stops here! We are passionate about knowledge and are always trying to better ourselves. We then pass that on to our clients and try to make learning as accessible as possible! There really is no stupid question here and strive to make sure everyone feels at home and confident!

I could go on, but it’s pretty easy to see we’ve got a pretty stellar program😉 Contact us today to see how we can help you reach your goals!

NOW OFFERED FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION!

“Mercy”

5 yr old 13.3 hand (sticked) Dapple Grey Grade Pony

Mercy was purchased by myself and my assistant trainer to be a pony for our boys. However, my kiddo will only ride my big red mare🤦‍♀️ and my assistant’s kiddo was in an accident so he won’t be able to ride for a long time and that is why she is offered! Mercy is super sweet and has an in your pocket personality! She is easy to catch, good with her feet, good for the vet, stands tied/ground tied/cross tied, and has no vices! She is an easy keeper being maintained on just grass hay. Mercy is not dominant and gets along well with others in a herd setting. She has a handful of rides, has offered no buck, and has been very easy to start. While she is Green and not currently a kid’s pony, I do believe she will make one with some more rides! I am 5’ 9” and don’t feel huge on her due to her stocky build so she is suitable for teenagers and smaller adults! I believe she would THRIVE as a hunter/jumper pony, junior rodeo pony, or just a good all around riding pony! Mercy has the sweetest face and just wants to please! I am more than happy to keep her in training for a new owner to get her finished out! Our loss is truly your gain on this one! Teeth floated last month, dewormed this week, and UTD on vaccines!

Despite the freezing temps and snow🥶 we are grateful to have a dry place to ride!

Here’s a random tip too!

Did you know that riding in temps below freezing can damage your horses lungs?! When riding in cold temps be sure to warm up slow, avoid any intense work, and make sure your horse doesn’t sweat. On days like today where the high is in the teens, we don’t ride as it’s not worth potential injury or lung damage! There are some great studies on this and I highly recommend researching it when wondering if it’s too cold to ride😉

Despite having a baby moment in the qualifier yesterday, Friday bounced back and made a 2D run at the NFR Race today! She wasnt ready for first to come up that quick 😝 but corrected herself and dialed right in! She is getting more solid with every run and this is just a reminder that the miles are what makes a horse so cut those babies some slack🫶🏻

We are all settled in at the Denver Qualifier! Jobu will be first out tomorrow and Friday will get the call for day 2!

𝓛𝓸𝓸𝓴𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓪𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓭 𝓽𝓸 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓…

As we look into the new year, I am only going to be offering 3-5 slots to the public; 2 of which are already filled! We are going to be rodeoing heavily as well as preparing our next group of Futurity horses so we have decided to downsize our program a little to accommodate. Given I will only have 1-3 rotating slots, please reach out in advance so I can get your name on a stall! I will also be instituting a 60 day minimum this year with the exception of consignment horses. If you have a consignment horse, we’d love to get them in our barn asap as we are currently sold out and I have folks looking!! Futurity, Rodeo, and Open horses are always welcome as well as horses needing seasoning and tune ups. We will also continue with our lesson program as normal. We will be pausing our c**t starting program for the time being as my assistant’s kiddo got hurt and she needs to give her full attention to him. We did have a board increase that takes effect on 1/1/25 so please visit our website or reach out for current pricing.

2024 has been a big, wonderful year! We had 14-16 head and a full barn the entire year😳 We watched clients crush goals, youngsters develop, helped create some new dream teams, and won quite a bit on the road! While we are looking foward to a change of pace with the new year, we would like to thank each and every client for making 2024 great🥂

Merry Christmas from all of us at Higher Ground Ranch! Wishing you and yours a wonderful day filled with joy and family!

I have been insanely busy and have missed the last few days of tips🙈 I decided to go ahead and close instead of trying to catch up on missed days!

✨In Conclusion✨
As we head into 2025, make it your goal to learn as much as possible! Watch videos, hang out at warm up pens, take lessons, watch livestreams etc! I am always amazed at how much I’ve learned every year when I look back on it and 2024 is no exception. As we enter this new year, approach everything with an open mind and a burning desire for knowledge🔥 If you encounter something new that your not sure about, run it by a trainer or trusted mentor to get their take!

If I have enough interest, we’ve been discussing doing some weekly training videos this spring so if that’s something you’d like to see on this page, let me know🙋‍♀️ Our primary goal here at HGR is to make knowledge more accessible and we look forward to continuing on that mission in 2025! If you are thinking about taking lessons, sending a horse for training, consigning one that isn’t the right fit, or wanting to host a clinic, please reach out and we will be more than happy to help make your dreams a reality!!

Day 17
✨Stretching✨

I posted about this earlier in the year but I think it’s time for a refresh! Unpopular opinion, but your barrel horse needs to stretch their WHOLE BODY EVERY RIDE! Yes I’m talking to you who has to ride in a tie down everyday and their horse is a walking poco stick😂 I strongly believe that the reason Kissing Spine is so common amongst barrel horse is because there horses are ridden like balls and never taught to stretch out and relax. If you get on any of my horses, they will stick their nose in the dirt once you start trotting and stretch themselves out. As a result, I’ve never had issues with Kissing Spine🤷‍♀️ It may be hard to teach one how to get soft, engage their core, and drop their neck but it will be so beneficial in the long run. The product of teaching them how to stretch is a strong horse that can carry themselves without any gadgets. All of mine will also ride in a snaffle and stretch like this. I’m all for headgear when running because some horses need a little help, but when you’re riding around on the daily I challenge you to create a soft, strong, balanced horse. And no, this can not be achieved with draw reins. The neck only drops because their back/core is engaged and their hind end is driving up underneath. If you’ve never felt a truly round horse, take a lesson with someone who does and develop a feel for it!

Day 15
✨Never Stop Learning✨

If you’ve been to my barn, you’ve heard me say, “The day you stop learning is the day you should stop riding” and I stand by this 110%. If you ever encounter a trainer or mentor that thinks they know it all or isn’t constantly in pursuit of knowledge, RUN the other direction! The most dangerous trap we can fall into is thinking we know “enough”. I see so many things at races where I just want to help so bad; things like curbs straps on the wrong rings, poor fitting saddles, poor bit choices, etc. The truth is though, if these folks genuinely sought out knowledge, they would probably be able to solve a lot of issues on their own! The beautiful thing about living in the 21st century is that we have access to SO MUCH knowledge right at our fingertips tips! Put your social media to use and instead of wishing you were like so and so, see how much you can learn from others!

Day 14
✨Warm Up Pen Etiquette✨

Oooo this is one that grinds my gears😂 Especially having come from reiner land where the warm up pen is always an organized, well running machine.

If it is a very small pen, just go the same direction for crying out loud! When you’re ready to change, tell everyone that you’re changing the direction of the circle. That way everyone knows what is going on and there’s no wrecks.

Now for the average size pen, for the love have one circle going right and one going left. Yes I’m talking to you guys that like to run laps all the way around the arena like team ropers🤨😝 If you need to trot, do small circles, or walk, do it on the inside of the circle and let those who need to lope have the outside.

If you have one side going left and one side going right, magically no one gets into wrecks🤣 As ya’ll can probably tell I’m a little salty about this because nothing makes me more mad than trying to warm up in an organized fashion only to have someone run right in front of me and cut me off😵‍💫

If what I said doesn’t make sense, look up reining warm up pen etiquette and I’m sure there is a diagram😉

✨Competition Prep✨

Unless it’s a little weeknight jackpot, my horses almost always have the day off before we load up and head to a super show or rodeo. Why? It prevents me from wanting to make last minute changes and gives their bodies a rest before we hit the road. It’s always so tempting to want to cram one last session in but I promise you it’s not worth it and you’ll probably finish your ride with much more anxiety than confidence. If you’ve got a tough horse, I challenge you to stop riding even 2-3 days in advance once you have that good solid ride. You can always pony or lunge to give them exercise but avoid falling into the trap of trying to get your horse perfect the night before😉

☀️Teqita Sun Frost☀️
“Zero”
2022 Chestnut gelding
RRR Macho Dude x RRR Sak Em Sun Frost

This is one of my personal horses and I honestly can’t say a single bad thing about him! He is extremely sweet and has an exceptional mind. Zero has been a slow grower, so he has not been started yet but all the groundwork is done. He stands tied, cross ties, picks up feet, loads/unloads, roundpens, lunges, and has been saddled. This c**t takes everything in stride and will be super easy for someone to get going! He comes from a long line of great ranch horses and I doubt he will be an exception! I have no doubt he will make a family horse with his mind and would be a great option for someone that wants an easy project. Zero is built like a tank and should mature around 15.1-15.2. I had planned on starting him this spring, but life has thrown some curveballs and he’s looking a family! He is an easy keeper, has no vices, and is not dominant in a herd setting. No history of lameness or any injuries. He is UTD on everything. The guy really has all the parts to make someone a super snazzy horse so my loss is your gain!!!
