Hello Friends,

The Fourth Of July is such an exciting time for us, but not so much for our furry friends when it comes to the fireworks! 🎆

DID YOU KNOW THAT MORE PETS GO MISSING ON THE 2ND, 3RD, & 4TH OF JULY THAN ANY OTHER DAYS?!?! 1 in 5 dogs go missing after being scared by fireworks!

There are ways to prevent this from happening.

Please follow these important tips to keep our beloved furry friends safe while we have our fun!🐾

1.) Keep your pets at home! Firework celebrations may be too much for them and they can run.
2.) When staying home, especially with visitors coming-make sure exits are secure so pets cannot get out (doors & windows)
3.) Be sure to update Microchip ID's
4.) Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with proper identification
5.) Keep your pet crated or in a safe space where you know your pet cannot escape.
6.) To help keep your pet calm during fireworks-play calming music or turn on the TV to block out the sound.

Let's keep our furry friends safe & happy this holiday! 🐶🐱

UPDATE: Our sweet senior girls are still patiently waiting for a forever home and have yet to receive an adoption inquiry.

Are you looking for not just one but two incredibly sweet kitties to adopt? Look no further than Priscilla & Casper!

*Please see original post below for more details*

We’re Priscilla and Casper, two inseparable friends approaching our 12th birthdays at the shelter. Before we blow out our candles, all we wish for is a real home.

We have spent almost a year at the SPCA now, and though were grateful to be safe and warm, we still ache for a nurturing, permanent place with soft blankets, gentle hands, and a special someone to call our own. We watch the days pass here and try to stay hopeful, but sometimes, waiting to be chosen feels heavy and endless.

We were adopted once before many years ago, but when our owner’s life changed, we were returned. Despite that, we remain open and ready for a second chance that we’d love to share with one another, because our bond is deep and we simply cannot imagine life apart.

So if you understand that sometimes the greatest gift is a love that’s seasoned and steady, please apply for us today. We truly cannot think of a more priceless present than to finally belong, not just to a house, but to someone’s heart.

Priscilla and Casper are gentle, affectionate, loyal seniors who adore people and get along beautifully with other cats. They can be dog tested upon a submitted adoption application. Most of all, they would thrive in a calm home with adults and older children who will adore them for the precious Golden Girls they are! To inquire about Priscilla and Casper, please email us at [email protected], call us at (585)593-2200 ext. 2, or stop by the shelter to meet these sweethearts in person! Applications can be found on our website at www.spcaallegany.org.

Working Cat/Barn Homes Needed🐈‍⬛

What is a "working cat"?
A working cat is a fully vetted cat that isn't suitable as a pet in a typical home environment. Workings cats prefer access to the outdoors away from constant interactions with humans — this can be a farm, workshop, warehouse, or any other type of property that allows them to come and go as they choose.

Working cats are great for controlling unwanted pests and their populations. These cats prefer minimal human contact and require more space from humans than a home setting can provide. Working Cats would not be successful family members.

Working cat adopters must agree to provide:
-Consistent access to warm, safe shelter like a barn or shop to provide protection from the elements and possible predators.
-Access to food and clean water every day.
-Future medical care.
-Multiple-cat adoptions are encouraged but not required (the buddy system)
-A room or space to temporarily confine the cat(s) for up to 1-2 weeks with a litterbox and soft places to lie down, hide, and sleep, to acclimate to new surroundings.

Interested in adopting a working cat? Please submit an adoption application! Applications can be found here at the shelter, on our website, or you can email us for one!

Our New Shelter

Our new shelter is FINALLY done and we have moved all the animals to our new building!! We are happy to report that we have opened our doors on February 23, 2019.

The shelter building has been designed by Clark Patterson Lee from Olean using the latest shelter design techniques, including sound mitigation, energy efficiency, air exchange and sanitation. We also worked with Animal Arts in Colorado to assist in the layout and flow of the building. Kinley Corp from Allegany NY constructed our state of art facility. Improved systems will make the building more comfortable for volunteers, visitors, and our resident animals. In addition, the SPCA has incorporated "green" building strategies to minimize environmental impacts and increase efficiency, such as geo-thermal for our heating and cooling and solar arrays. We have chosen to construct the new shelter out of ICF (insulated concrete forms) - comprised of styrofoam inner and outer walls and concrete poured inside the walls which not only has a high R-value, but it also will act as a sound barrier. Our goal is to reduce the stress on the animals and to provide a healthier environment and to focus on enrichment and socialization activities for the animals in our care

This has been all made possible by our donors, bequests and several grants. The construction of our Low Income Spay/Neuter clinic was made possible by the ASPCA's NY State Animal Population Control Program grant. We received $100,000 in 2015 to start the clinic and in 2017 we have been approved for another $204,932 to complete the interior construction of the clinic along with outfitting the clinic with the surgical equipment needed. The Spay/Neuter clinic is critical in helping to control the animal population in Allegany County. We also received another grant from the Pedigree Foundation for $10,000 from their Program Development Grants for our indoor Dog Exercise Arena. These funds are being used to help to complete the indoor Dog Arena. The goal is to reduce the stress on our dogs by giving them the opportunity to have some out of the kennel time for exercise and play-time in the arena...thus helping them become more adoptable. A special THANK YOU to the ASPCA, Pedigree Foundation, Bertha Hamilton Foundation & Newman's Own....and let's not forget all of our donors who have made this vision and dream possible. Our NEW home is located at 5440 State Route 19 in Belmont, NY 14813.
