Sadie used to run at the sight of the leash. Now she comes to it on command.
Such a big step for her
This sweet boy had a great time at day training yesterday. One of his best qualities is that he gives great eye contact.
Engagement with the handler is so important! If your dog is focused on you, they don't care about the things around them that are potential triggers for excitement or other reactivity.
TOBY UPDATE-
Toby has made some impressive progress in the last 2 weeks.
On day 1, he was growling at humans who were within 5 feet of him, lunging when they were within 3 feet, especially when opening his kennel door or trying to put a leash on. He bit me on multiple occasions.
Slowly and safely we've introduced structure to Toby's daily routine. Holding him accountable for basic obedience commands and established trust through hand feeding and meeting his needs in a way that makes him feel comfortable.
Now finishing up day 13, Toby is more comfortable allowing people he doesn't know come into his space and here is the first time that Destiny has handled him on the leash.
With structure and her clear guidance you can see that he trusts and respects her.
Very proud of this guy, and it's only the beginning
ACCOUNTABILITY is what so many owners are missing in their relationship with their dogs.
Many owners are good about teaching their pets to sit or lay down, but they don't hold the dog accountable for staying in that position.
This leads the dog to believe that they can stop listening to the command at any point.
The bigger picture is that by not holding your dogs accountable for known behaviors, you're actually showing them that what you say is merely a suggestion not a command, and this alone will drastically change your dogs perception of you.
Does your dog pull like a freight train? We can help!
Our methods have been proven to be successful time and time again. Give us a call and we can help you become a better leader for your dog.
Warning.. This is hard to watch.
THIS IS NOT DOG TRAINING. THIS IS PURE ANIMAL ABUSE. THESE PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO TOUCH ANOTHER ANIMAL.
They should be in prison.
I AM DISGUSTED.
Just a little bit about the place command.
It's not puppy jail, it's just the method of how we build an off switch for dogs inside the home.
Here we are working on holding a down, going to place, and recalling off of place.
The micro of it is that he's practicing some basic obedience commands he's learned over the last 2 weeks but the macro of the situation is that he's learning to control his impulses, wait for direction and engage with humans. All of which are major life skills for a dog.
Rocky is crushing it and has come such a long way in the last 2 weeks.
Practicing Frisbee
PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT.
The way you shape behaviors with your dog is the result that you are going to get.
Work out the kinks early and address the mistakes because they won't just go away on their own.
Practicing Calmness
This is what socializing dogs looks like with the Luna-tic family. The dogs that stay with us get a crash course in calmness and learn how to just exist while life goes on around them.
Here we have Cody, Ghost, Belle, Phoenix and Louie all hanging out while Destiny does some computer work in the office.
It starts here, and then we move to higher distraction areas.
STAY TUNED!
The off switch
One of the best things you can teach your dogs is an "off switch".
Without one, dogs playing in the house often escalates and results in something broken, or the play becomes too rough.
Take the time to teach your dog when they are becoming too rowdy and give them an off switch.
Practicing thresholds with Ghost
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
Notice, when we approached the door I did not have to ask him to sit. With repetition Ghost has learned that for him to go through the door, part of my expectations for him is to sit or lay down politely behind that initial threshold while I get myself ready to go out with him.
Building some enthusiasm for the place command. This is a game changer.
We build the dog up and teach them to love going to their place, then we slow them down to learn to relax while they are there.
Hands down one of the most useful things you can teach your dog.
Breakfast
Our feeding routine generally looks something like this. Having the dogs wait and build anticipation for their food increases their drive. This helps create dogs that aren't so picky as well as helps with training in other areas.
Our dogs need to know how to learn before we can expect them to understand what we are asking them to do.
I talk a lot about thresholds with my clients and that is because they are SO IMPORTANT! Your dog needs to understand that they can't come bursting through doorways just because they want to. This carries over from the kennel to the house to cars etc...
Working for dinner
I try to tell all of my clients to hand feed meals instead of allowing the dog to just eat out of their bowl. This is is a huge relationship booster because it makes you more valuable to your dog. If they want to eat they have to pay attention to what you are asking. Over time this translates to higher level obedience, not to mention it is way fun for your dog.
I do little training sessions like this for just about every meal for all of my dogs.
