Please help us welcome Dr. Smith! 🥳 🐾

Dr. Smith is a proud native of South Beloit, IL, having grown up in the greater Beloit area. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Clarke University in Dubuque, IA in 2017. Most recently, she graduated with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in May.
Dr. Smith’s veterinary journey began right here at Badger Veterinary Hospital, where she first shadowed in 2016. Over the years, she returned for multiple externships—both during her undergraduate studies and her clinical year in vet school. Her love for the clinic, its community, and the dedicated staff ultimately inspired her to make Badger Veterinary Hospital her professional home.
In general practice, Dr. Smith’s favorite part is building long-term relationships with pets and their families—watching patients grow from playful puppies and kittens into cherished senior companions. She shares her own home with two beloved dogs, Jasmine (pictured) and Finley. Finley was diagnosed with heartworm disease in 2020, an experience that ignited her passion for preventive medicine and she is committed to helping families protect their pets from preventable illnesses. Dr. Smith’s professional interests also include urgent and convenient care, neurology, and senior pet wellness.
Outside of the clinic, she enjoys reading, golfing, growing her own vegetables, and spending time with family and friends. She is thrilled to begin meeting clients and their furry family members and is excited to serve the Beloit and surrounding communities.

Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Gus. It is a sad day at the clinic. Gus has been one of the best clinic cats we could have ever asked for. To sleeping in many different places, saying hello to all of our clients and patients and even laying with some of our surgery patients while they recovered. Over the past year, he has received so much love and care from our clients and staff. He will forever be in our hearts and we will miss him dearly. We love you Gussy Bus. ❤️🐾

❗️ WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES BELOW ❗️

We know we talk about the importance of spaying and neutering a lot, and this right here is why! Sandy came to us in need of emergency surgery due to pyometra.

Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus in female dogs/cats, typically occurring in dogs/cats that have not been spayed. It usually happens after a dog/cat goes through a heat cycle. The condition is characterized by an accumulation of pus inside the uterus, which can lead to severe illness or death if not treated promptly.

There are two types of pyometra:

Closed pyometra: The cervix is closed, trapping the infection and pus inside the uterus, which can cause it to rupture.

Open pyometra: The cervix is open, allowing pus to drain out of the uterus.

Common signs of pyometra include:

Abnormal vaginal discharge (in open pyometra)
Increased thirst and urination
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
Vomiting
Fever

Pyometra requires immediate veterinary attention, and treatment usually involves surgery (spaying) to remove the infected uterus. In some cases, medication can be used if the dog is not a good candidate for surgery, but surgery is generally the most effective treatment.

Not many pet owners know about this condition, but it is preventable. Spaying your pet not only eliminates the risk of pyometra but also reduces the chance of reproductive cancers and unwanted litters. Sandy is now on the road to recovery, but her story is a reminder of why we advocate so strongly for spaying and neutering. Please don’t wait—schedule your pet’s surgery today.
