What a perfect opportunity to have some fun while working, a sled ride on Belting while lining the stalls 😄
Video 6. "It's all about relationship." ~Adam Murray.
I think this has got to be my favorite video. Adam and Reckless have just finished their training on cattle and are now turning the cattle out. Reckless is calm and confident, you can see even she is pleased with herself and what they just did. She is calm and listening intently to Adam as they move around smoothly and efficiently. This is only possible because of the trust and respect these two have for each other, partners to accomplish what they couldn't do without the other. Both at peace to be in each other's company and proud of the work accomplished.
Video 5. There's nothing like a good horse.
This is the last video of Reckless working a cow. You can see the improvement from the start to the finish. One thing that makes her such a joy to ride and work with is her eagerness to work and learn. You want to make it fun for your horse, not dread a halter or the saddle like it was a job they hate. Be a leader they trust and enjoy, then they will give everything they've got and continually try. 😊
Video 4. There's nothing like being on a horse chasing a cow.
Cutting is such a fun avenue because nothing is a guarantee. You can have a perfect horse that hits everything right all the time, but have that one (or usually more!) sour or "waspy" cow that no matter what gets away from you. But the fun is in going out there with your four-legged partner and seeing what the two of you can accomplish. You can see Reckless putting it together nicely here!
Video 3. It's ok to make mistakes.
Through our mistakes we learn. How those mistakes are handled makes the difference. God likes it when we make mistakes and loves it more when we allow Him to show us the truth in those mistakes so we can fix them. God does this lovingly and steadily, He doesn't thrash us into the ground for it. That's the way we want to handle our horses, children, and the people in our lives. You can see when Adam picks up or speeds up Reckless when she's made a mistake, but she is working with Adam to learn and stays confident and attentive through it all.
Video 2. Set your horse up for success.
You can put 20 hours a week on your horse and still not get very far in your training progress. The key is knowing your individual horse and it's strength and weaknesses and how to set it up for success to learn and accomplish different tasks.
Video 1. "I train the mind to save the body". ~Adam Murray.
Adam's goal in training any level of horse is to establish a relationship of trust and respect, not just that the horse trust and respect him, but that he trusts and respects the horse. This is the foundation needed for effective and clear communication that others can barely pick up. During these 6 videos Adam is training on our mare Reckless, who we've had just over a year. They are working on cutting and you can see times when Adam steps in to help Reckless be where she needs to be, but mostly she takes care of the task at hand. Oh, and the whole session is bridle less. 🙂
