❄️ Just a few minutes of your time could save a life this winter ❄️

As the temperature drops during these upcoming cold winter months, our outdoor feline friends and creatures alike will be seeking warmth and shelter. One irresistible and dangerous place they love to sleep is under your car's hood in the engine bay. While this provides them warmth from your engine and shelter from the unforgiving weather, starting your vehicle while they are inside the engine bay can cause them serious injury and in most cases death.

To ensure the safety of any potential stowaways, there's a few things that can be done that only takes a few minutes of your time.

-- Tap, thump or bang on your car's hood and listen for any movements/sounds
-- Honk your horn (I'm sure your neighbor's will forgive you)
-- Check under your hood to guarantee it's clear.
-- Check your tires too! That's another cozy spot to sleep.

Taking a few moments to do those things can save a life! 🐾

Happy Tuesday to you all, here's Dr.Tuthill with his take on ear infections.

"Does your dog have an ear infection?

Ear infections in dogs are very common. They are basically a skin infection down in the ear canals. Obvious symptoms of an ear problem include excessive head shaking and scratching at the ears or the neck area, but signs can be as subtle as holding an ear down or seeming bothered by touching the ears. Sometimes you can see redness and inflammation in the outer canal.

Most dogs will have an incidental ear infection sometime in their life, but dogs that swim a lot or get bathed frequently may experience more ear infections, and recurrent or chronic ear infections in dogs often have underlying allergic skin diseases.

These infections are usually caused by an overgrowth of the normal yeast and bacterial flora that lives on the skin, and are not considered to be contagious. On occasion, especially with chronic infections, some unusual bacteria from the environment can take hold in the ear canal.

When presented with an ear infection the veterinarian will often swab the ear canal and perform a β€œcytology” to see if the infection is primarily yeast or bacterial, and to see if any unusual bacteria are present. In some cases where unusual bacteria are present, the doctor may recommend a culture of the ear to identify the type of bacteria and help decide on the best antibiotic to use.

In most cases we prescribe an ointment to put in the ears, and maybe a medicated solution to clean the ears. Sometimes an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory medicine is prescribed to help with swelling and discomfort. We also have some long-acting ointment preparations for those pets who are uncooperative about treating the ears at home.

It is important to treat an ear infection promptly, and to treat until the infection is fully resolved. This may require a recheck or two to examine the deeper ear canals with an otoscope in order to decide if additional treatment is needed."

If you think your pet may have an ear infection, don't hesitate to call and schedule an appointment. We'll gladly take a look!

We're introducing "Tuesday Tips with Dr. Tuthill" πŸŽ‰
Dr. Tuthill will be sharing his knowledge, covering a variety of topics here on our page, every Tuesday so stay tuned! There couldn't be a better time to start than now, with Halloween right around the corner... because what's scarier than an unexpected vet bill??? 😒

"As Halloween approaches we want to remind our pet parents that this time of year can be scary for us all and while candy is a sweet treat for us, it can pose a dangerous threat to our pet's health. Most of us have heard that Chocolate is toxic to dogs, but do you know the risks? Dark Chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs. In fact, the darker the chocolate, the greater risk it poses to your pet's health. Dark Chocolate ingestions should be evaluated by a veterinarian or Poison Control as soon as possible, as the effects it has on the body can take its toll rather fast. While Milk Chocolate is not as toxic to dogs in small amounts, the high amounts of fat and sugar can upset their gut leading to vomiting, diarrhea and in more severe cases Pancreatitis. Another toxins found in candy are artificial sweeteners, especially "Xylitol". This can be found in sweet candies, sugar-free gum, and even some Peanut Butters! Even consumption in small amounts should be avoided. Some other less common toxins that should be avoided are Macadamia Nuts as they contain toxins that cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, low blood sugar, in more severe cases liver damage. Grapes and Raisins are also extremely toxic to dogs (even juices/extracts) as they contain a chemical that can be very damaging to the kidneys, the toxic consumption amount varies and can be unpredictable.

To avoid these dangers, please be mindful and keep your children's candy out of reach at all times. Also, keep your eyes peeled on the ground if your pet is walking around with you trick or treating as there's bound to be dropped candy laying around.

For more information on toxins and/or health risks, visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center's website. There is also a hotline available for use if you think your pet has ingested something toxic.
Their phone number is (888) 426-4435 with (a $95 one-time fee is charged per incident) or a similar resource is the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 with (a $85 one-time fee per incident)

As always, be safe and have fun! Happy Halloween" πŸŽƒπŸ‘»πŸ•·
