Keeping your indoor/outdoor cats inside overnight through the winter months is recommended, as the temperature drops near or below freezing (32 degrees or less) the risk of hypothermia and frostbite increases greatly, especially with wet/snowy elements.
While this can prove to be a difficult task, the link below provides you with an easy tutorial on how to build a warm outdoor shelter for felines and creatures alike. Something as simple as a storage tote full of straw could help save a life this winter! ❄️

❄️ Just a few minutes of your time could save a life this winter ❄️

As the temperature drops during these upcoming cold winter months, our outdoor feline friends and creatures alike will be seeking warmth and shelter. One irresistible and dangerous place they love to sleep is under your car's hood in the engine bay. While this provides them warmth from your engine and shelter from the unforgiving weather, starting your vehicle while they are inside the engine bay can cause them serious injury and in most cases death.

To ensure the safety of any potential stowaways, there's a few things that can be done that only takes a few minutes of your time.

-- Tap, thump or bang on your car's hood and listen for any movements/sounds
-- Honk your horn (I'm sure your neighbor's will forgive you)
-- Check under your hood to guarantee it's clear.
-- Check your tires too! That's another cozy spot to sleep.

Taking a few moments to do those things can save a life! 🐾

Happy Tuesday to you all, here's Dr.Tuthill with his take on ear infections.

"Does your dog have an ear infection?

Ear infections in dogs are very common. They are basically a skin infection down in the ear canals. Obvious symptoms of an ear problem include excessive head shaking and scratching at the ears or the neck area, but signs can be as subtle as holding an ear down or seeming bothered by touching the ears. Sometimes you can see redness and inflammation in the outer canal.

Most dogs will have an incidental ear infection sometime in their life, but dogs that swim a lot or get bathed frequently may experience more ear infections, and recurrent or chronic ear infections in dogs often have underlying allergic skin diseases.

These infections are usually caused by an overgrowth of the normal yeast and bacterial flora that lives on the skin, and are not considered to be contagious. On occasion, especially with chronic infections, some unusual bacteria from the environment can take hold in the ear canal.

When presented with an ear infection the veterinarian will often swab the ear canal and perform a β€œcytology” to see if the infection is primarily yeast or bacterial, and to see if any unusual bacteria are present. In some cases where unusual bacteria are present, the doctor may recommend a culture of the ear to identify the type of bacteria and help decide on the best antibiotic to use.

In most cases we prescribe an ointment to put in the ears, and maybe a medicated solution to clean the ears. Sometimes an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory medicine is prescribed to help with swelling and discomfort. We also have some long-acting ointment preparations for those pets who are uncooperative about treating the ears at home.

It is important to treat an ear infection promptly, and to treat until the infection is fully resolved. This may require a recheck or two to examine the deeper ear canals with an otoscope in order to decide if additional treatment is needed."

If you think your pet may have an ear infection, don't hesitate to call and schedule an appointment. We'll gladly take a look!

Our Story

Founded by Dr. A.C. Brown in 1965, Beltsville Veterinary Hospital has been your neighborhood veterinarian for over 50 years. We grew up with this community, and we care for its pets like they are our own. Our goal is to provide every animal with a lifetime of optimal health. This means we emphasize preventive medicine, including regular checkups, lab screenings, and vaccinations. We also have complete diagnostic and surgical suites to detect and treat any unexpected conditions.

Every member of our professional family is committed to exceptional care. Most of our veterinarians, technicians, kennel workers, and administrative staff have been with us for many years. They are up-to-date on the latest veterinary care practices and procedures. Everyone is familiar with advanced and modern diagnostic equipment.

We love our community and pride ourselves on providing great, quality pet care. We often host veterinary school residents at our practice because we understand the importance of the mentorship to upcoming care providers. Each May you can also find us at Beltsville Day celebrating with our community and sharing health resources with area pet owners.

We proudly care for the pets of Beltsville and our surrounding communities of Calverton, College Park, Laurel, Greenbelt, Silver Spring, and beyond!
