The Yancey group had a great final couple of days at Sofala. Kristy finished her Southern Spiral Slam (kudu, eland, nyala and bushbuck) with a flintlock. One would have to look very far to find a lady hunter, if any, who have completed the spiral slam with a black powder gun. Mike made a split second decision to shoot one of the most elusive kudu bulls in recent history and Walton added a beautiful blue wildebeest.

Action packed and some really wild moments. It is the Sofala experience.

Busy 24 hours at Sofala. It’s like taking a step back in time with the kudu and zebra black powder hunts. On another hunt the Sako .308 is proving the doubters wrong over and over again. Congrats to Kristy, Mike and Walton!

If you want to know the typical standard trad bow package with Sofala Safaris, here it is: impala (hunter: Terry Hughes) and blue wildebeest cow (hunter: Michael Yancey). And then you add more species. Of course this is all based on how prepared you are for Africa. In short, the more trad bow hunting experience (not just shooting targets) you have, the more you practice and making sure your hunting arrows fly like darts - the better your chances!

Special things keep happening with special people at this special place….. Terry Hughes is on his third hunt with Sofala Safaris. In the past he succeeded with numerous awesome smaller plains game such as 3 huge impala rams and blesbok. But that “bigger plains game species” just had not worked out for Terry from one hunt to the next. However, it is amazing how he just keeps coming back. You can see his eyes light up when he talks about this place. Sometimes I don’t know what it is but I am so grateful to hunt with someone like Terry at Sofala, again and again. In the last 24 hours specials things happened with the beautiful longbow he built….

A last day full of surprises at Sofala. Putting the bow down and picking up a .375 to hunt a CAPE BUFFALO, now that was not something we predicted but it was exactly what Donny Dye decided to do. The “grey ghost.” Kudu are in a category of their own and SO elusive. There is no pattern or predictable behaviour and right when you think you will never see one after days of hunting, all of a sudden one may just appear. Congrats to Scott Buchanan and David Bond.
