If you have a dog that is extremely stressed by unfamiliar people or children coming to the door (“why are they dressed so weirdly??” 😳), be proactive in mitigating their stress this Halloween.

Take a page from one of my clients, who set this up outside of her house last year so that the kids could come and get some snacks without her fearful dog panicking every three seconds.

I really love the messaging she chose. She gave clear instructions to the kids (direct and to the point!) and also emphasized the importance of extending kindness and compassion towards animals. Seriously, how perfect is that? ❤️

Halloween is once a year, folks - we can make small accommodations for our dogs to make it through safely and comfortably!

What kinds of things are you doing to help your dogs cope with or avoid the added stress of trick or treaters? 👀

Things we will be doing:

⭐️ creating a similar setup as my client

⭐️ appropriate physical exercise and mental stimulation during the day to help them more easily relax later

⭐️ stuffing/freezing a couple of kongs in advance for their dinner

⭐️ having marrow bones/chews on hand

⭐️ having the TV on (horror flicks duh) and a layer of white noise underneath (thank you air purifier)

⭐️ preparing a counterconditioning procedure (high value treats at the ready and nearby) for if the doorbell DOES ring, despite our best efforts

Brodie appreciation post. This tricolor Aussie shepherd is 13 years old; yet he’s spunky as an adolescent pup. Brodie is very food motivated, loves walking, not a big fan of other dogs or delivery trucks. Our sitters adore his cute face + wiggly-ness.

The Humane Society of Central Oregon is running low on dog food and is asking for donations.

The Humane Society has received an influx of puppies lately and is very low on canned food. The shelter says donations of food, dog treats and cat litter have decreased substantially over the past couple of years.

It is now having to budget for supplies that have traditionally been covered by donations.

"You can bring donations directly to the shelter, which is a great excuse to visit the animals. You can also drop off donations at our thrift store, which is on the south end of town," said HSCO Director of Community Partnerships Lynne Ouchida.

After the unexpected loss of his dog, Wolfgang, Steve Greig decided he had to do something to make Wolfgang’s loss feel purposeful. “I went to a shelter and said, ‘Give me the oldest dog you have,’ ” Greig said. It turned out to be a 12-year-old Chihuahua with four bad knees and a heart murmur, a dead-ender if there ever was one—he named him Eeyore. Since then, he estimates he has taken in 19 senior canines. We are thrilled to announce that our Public Microchip Reader Station has been successfully installed! This station allows anyone who finds a lost pet to easily scan for a microchip and follow the provided instructions to reunite them with their owner. It’s a simple, efficient way to help lost pets get back home quickly and safely.

We’re hoping to spread the word about this invaluable resource. If you or someone you know finds a lost pet, please refer them to our station at 413 NW Hill St. Bend 97702.

How it works:
Simply bring the found pet to the station located at FIXbend 413 NW Hill St. anytime. Use the reader to scan the microchip. Follow the step-by-step instructions to access the pet’s registered contact information and alert the owner.

This service is being provided by FIXbend, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing low-cost spay, neuter, vaccine, and microchip services to Central Oregon. To learn more about what we do please visit FIXbend.org.
