All about masking and why it happens. Do you remember during the pandemic when the vet would take the dog away from you and you would sit in your car while they were seen?
Remember how many reactive dogs would suddenly become perfect angels for the vets?
That's because the dog was masking. Masking is a real phenomenon. So, what do you do about it?
Follow us on our socials and we'll walk you through it, or better yet, let us teach you with lessons or board and train programs.
Masking occurs when a reactive dog intentionally hides or minimizes their typical reactive behaviors when encountering a new person or environment. This is a coping mechanism the dog uses to avoid potential conflict or perceived threats.
When a reactive dog is in the presence of an unfamiliar person, like a trainer or boarder, they may mask their reactivity for various reasons:
- Stress and uncertainty about the new situation
- A desire to please and behave appropriately
- Novelty and excitement about the new person
- Lack of specific triggers that normally elicit their reactive responses
Recognizing and understanding this masking behavior is crucial for trainers and caretakers working with reactive dogs. It allows them to take a patient, gradual approach, giving the dog time to warm up and feel secure enough to fully express their reactivity. This, in turn, enables the development of a tailored training plan to address the dog's specific triggers and needs.

Zoë is doing great in her board and train!
At Paw 2 paw your dog becomes like family. While some people may have thought that a child made it so we couldn’t train, it actually enhanced our ability by incorporating training with children into your board and trains! Zoë is learning skills such as impulse control, heel, loose leash walking, and leave it. We can’t wait for her mom to join us for an entire week to train alongside us and learn everything that Zoë is learning! Not to mention, Zoë lost her dog park privileges long ago but had since gained them back after just a couple weeks in our board and train program! Go Zoë!
