Remember when your parents used to tell you to wait 30 minutes after eating before going for a swim? Unlike us, horses can actually benefit from eating forage before they exercise, as it may help reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.

While a variety of things can contribute to the development of stomach ulcers (medications, diet, stress, etc.), one train of thought is that these areas of irritation result as a consequence of the acid of the stomach splashing against unprotected parts of the stomach lining. When a horse eats forage, the hay can help absorb some of that acid and thus reduce the risk of ulcer formation.

It is important to note that a forage meal (one comprised of hay or grass) provides the most benefit, while eating large volumes of concentrate feeds (such as oats, corn, or other cereal grains) can actually increase the amount of acid within the stomach.

As always, please be sure to consult with your vet regarding further diagnostics and treatments if you have concerns that your horse may have gastric ulcers.

Always a good reminder for this time of the year: The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to cool down before drinking water is a myth, so be advised that it is best to rehydrate sweaty, hardworking horses without delay.

The key, however, is to know how much water to allow at one time. Because of the equine stomach’s relatively small capacity, offer small amounts of water every 20 minutes until the horse drinks his fill rather than letting the animal drink it all at once. A slower reintroduction of water is good common sense, while it makes no sense to hold horses off it.

Remember that water is the most vital nutrient for a horse. The average idle 1,100-pound horse in a cool environment will drink 6 to 10 gallons of water per day, but that amount may easily double or triple in a hot environment! Therefore, it goes without saying that providing cool, clean water to your horses at ALL times is of paramount importance.

Rollin, rollin, rollin…

◈ Rolling is my go-to for sensitive highly tendinous areas (say on the lower leg and stifle) when rehabbing injuries or working on performance recovery ◈

Here’s an example of what we call a ‘local/direct’ protocol.

This horse is rehabbing from lesions on both of her front suspensory tendons and I am utilizing my probes to be specific in the application of the micro-current.

Prior to treatment there was significant heat present along both tendons and I was so pleased to have them ice cold directly after our session ✨

This is Tally Cat.

68 days ago she got her tail forcefully amputated, by what we suspect was a car. She had fractures to her pelvis, sacrum, and now only has 3 coccygeal vertebrae left (cats average 21+ coccygeal vertebrae). She received phenomenal care from our local emergency clinic and they shared with us she had several indicators that she could recover. So what were we to do, gracefully my husband said we have every ability to give her a chance, we have to try.

Fast forward, she has been making a miraculous recovery, and we’re thanking our Equiscope sessions for some of that.

When animals with tails get them ‘pulled’ off-they typically suffer from luxation of the spinal column. Affecting a long list of things, in Tally’s case the area of concern is the origin and function of the pudendal nerve. The pudendal nerve controls the function of the urinary tract.
With the guidance of some amazing veterinary practitioners and I will personally say obsessive care from her people, she now is slowly regaining control of her bladder and we are hoping to help her make a recovery of 90% or greater. We couldn’t have done it without some of these individuals, especially my friend Kristen, their support and their belief in my ability to help her heal through intensive care and out of the box rehab strategies.

Don’t let the cat wrap fool you, we just have to use it to place the electrode plates because she thinks they feel funny initially, plus it helps keep her from moving around since she has a mind of her own. Tally really does enjoy her treatments and typically falls asleep during.

Tally isn’t our typical subject but it was a great chance to see what the black box can do. All her progress is promising and we’re staying excited about her recovery and are eager see her ✨ future.

People often ask what is the Equiscope? What does it do, how does it work? Why and when is it an applicable modality for your program?

So to break it all down, the intelligent micro-current technology of the Equiscope:
◈ Is effective, safe, fast, and drug-free
◈ Increases circulation, reducing inflammation, decreases pain
◈ Increase ATP production at a cellular level (cellular energy) by restoring the membrane potential in just seconds
◈ Scans, interprets and autocorrects abnormalities in electrical pathways of nervous and connective tissue via the input-output mechanism of biofeedback
◈ Offers accelerated injury healing by improving cellular metabolism
◈ Improves flexibility, increases range of motion and muscle rehabilitation and recovery
◈ Detoxification, down to a cellular level (restoration of membrane potential)

Applications:
(Included but not limited to)
◈ Muscle soreness, injury and damage
◈ Performance recovery
◈ Wound healing
◈ Nervous tissue damage
◈ Tendon and ligament strains and tears
◈ Arthritis
◈ Infections
◈ Skeletal issues
◈ Hoof ailments - founder, laminitis, navicular
◈ Overall well-being and anxiety reduction (getting the nervous system out of the sympathetic state into the parasympathetic)
◈ Immune system boost and infections
◈ Decrease post surgery rehabilitation time

The in depth version:
Officially known as Electro-Equiscope, fondly referred to as the Equiscope is a micro-current class 2 medical device that communicates with the body’s cells through electrical biofeedback. The micro-current is delivered to the cells and back through the application of electrode plates, probes, and rollers. Unique to the Equiscope that differs from other therapeutic devices is the input-output mechanism, biofeedback. The device receives feedback from the body and adjusts the focused micro-current accordingly to autocorrect the abnormal electrical patterns in both nervous and connective tissue.

Over the years the developer of the Equiscope and their educators have designed protocols for the many physiological ailments causing pain, loss of performance, debilitation in humans, horses and our canine friends.
The vast protocols and adaptations to them enable the Equiscope to provide a drug-free path to holistic wellbeing of the subject it is applied to.

Welcome!

I am Lexi, the certified Electro-Equiscope technician, sports med enthusiast (humans, horses and dogs) and ‘amatuer’ athlete behind LV Equine.

As an avid equestrian competitor, I have sought to continually learn about the biomechanics of our equine partners and how we can help them be their best. Over the years this eagerness for knowledge has also expanded to studying how our human body functions from a bio-mechanical and physiological perspective.

After an accident, the course of my life diverted from pursuing a career in the field of veterinary medicine. I still felt the draw to the equine sports medicine field, and redirected my focus to therapeutics. All that lead us to where we are today and the development of LV Equine.
A business where passion, curiosity, and the intrigue of science meet. I am ecstatic about helping humans and horses feel their best!

LV Equine is based out of Central Oregon but travels to accommodate client needs. We also attend shows, barrel races and rodeos.

Please reach out if you have any questions about services or to schedule a complementary consult.
