Posture is a key element in identifying pain. Mild changes are often perceived as "laziness" when in fact dogs may be offloading a painful limb, pelvis or spine. If your dog is not quickly responding to your cues to sit, that can be a big sign of pain.
Inability to get comfortable and increased panting when you don't expect them to pant can be a sign of pain.
Limping is nearly always a sign of pain in dogs. They are masters at compensating and overusing other parts of their body to navigate daily activities despite pain - and they do it right under our noses!
Changes in daily function are very common signs of pain. Inability to maintain posture while eliminating, slipping more on wood or tile floors, avoiding stairs and walks or hesitating before getting into the car or furniture are all signs of pain.
Pain is known to cause an increase in noise sensitivity in dogs. It also causes dogs to be more wary of people and other dogs approaching, resulting in growling or even snapping/biting.
Pain is sometimes difficult to identify in dogs. Here are some signs to help you determine if your dog is in pain:
1. Lameness, limping and stiffness
2. Poor posture or difficulty changing posture
3. Changes in daily function and activity
4. Changes in behavior
5. Restlessness
5 ways to keep your dog healthy
Keeping your dog feeling great throughout all stages of life should include weight management, great nutrition, regular veterinary care, moderate activity, daily enrichment and plenty of rest.

Happy 4th!
Wishing you a safe and happy day of celebration! #happy4thofjuly
Celebrating Juneteenth is celebrating freedom.
Freedom: The state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.
Hydrotherapy is something we are passionate about about at Stride. It provides buoyant, safe exercise, increasing strength, joint mobility and coordination for senior dogs, dogs who have had surgery or dogs with chronic pain. It is a big part of our multi-modal approach to canine health and wellness. Give us a call to find out more!
We are often asked how we know when dogs are painful or how they show pain. Unless dogs are in a significant amount of pain, they generally donât vocalize (except maybe those chatty northern breeds.) We rely on observable changes in posture, gait, strength and manual palpation to help us isolate pain. In this video, Dr. McConnell is assessing an agility dog to get a Musculoskeletal health baseline. And, while there have been no known physical problems noted during training or other activities, our detailed and thorough exam found some areas of concern that can now be addressed and monitored to hopefully prevent any long term issues. What do you see in this video? Also, special thanks to Ruffie for being such a stellar patient!
look at Dill go! We are so happy with the progress he has made in a short time since surgery. Follow his full story Bend Animal Emergency and Specialty Center
Dogs are amazing at fooling us into thinking they have better function than they actually do. These video comparisons show that when we reduce the ability of the forelimbs, shoulders and back to assume all of the workload, the ârealâ functional ability presents itself. #fordogsforlife #functionalanalysis #caninerehab #inbend #experiencematters
