As county fair season is now upon us we wanted to share a few thoughts…

We are as committed as we’ve ever been to WINNING and we would consider ourselves extremely competitive people, as I’m sure most of you are as well. We anxiously await the reports of champions and can’t wait to share in your joy!

However, we say this all the time and feel it appropriate to say it again here: winning shows is not the main goal - providing a once in a lifetime experience that teaches is the MAIN goal! So buy, raise, work with, and show pigs you’re proud of regardless of the result!! If you take a great one to the show the odds will be in your favor, but it does not guarantee the judge will have the same style as you or that he/she will not make a judgement call you disagree with. So when this happens (and it will eventually happen to us all) lose with grace, enjoy the ride with your pig, friends, and family, and remember to keep the most important things at the forefront.

He BLEW US AWAY as a baby pig and we had to own him… In our opinion he’s matured into a boar that has a chance at changing the industry. We’ve watched the Breath Taker deal very closely and I can tell you with absolute confidence that if there’s a boar worth $400,000 it’s him, and this one takes it to another level- makes sense knowing his mother is a littermate to Back Slap (sire of the highly influential Absolute at Heimers among many others)… If you can’t tell we’re pretty fired up about First Breath! 😎

What makes a great one “great” isn’t that they make freaky pieces, or cool looking babies, or even winners, it’s their ability to transcend time and trends. 94’s second litter sired by Buckwheat made the mother of Pay Attention at Southern Gold and the mother of our popular draft entry that sells this Friday. Her second to last litter sired by Top That made perhaps the most freaky breeding piece of them all that will certainly be heard from. That’s an 8 year gap in between those litters!

We could continue to rave about her influence, but I think it suffices to say she was and is a huge blessing to our family, our goals, and the future of our program.

Absolutely incredible individual! He’s not made for every sow, but he could and should be bred to ALOT of them!

In our opinion, he’s truly a “unicorn” - it is so hard to find one that can add true muscle shape, a massive chest, freaky huge legs, AND be a female maker. His power and proportions scream barrow maker but his pedigree is chalk full of high level, productive females!

🤩Surreal Feeling Today🥹

Today, the Southern Gold catalog showed up and we could hardly believe our eyes! How did “those guys from Utah” get here?! Well, here’s our story:

In November of 2008 we (Tyler and Cooper) went to our first “national show” in Duncan Oklahoma. Cooper was 12 at the time and I (Tyler) was 15. Up until this point we had only shown pigs at a handful of local shows, had very little to our name, and had no idea what it took to compete on a national level. Our dad, Gary saw a spark in us though, likely because he had once felt that same spark himself, and decided it was time to fan the flame, and boy did it ever! The Fall Classic is a historic venue, and over the years the industry has seen many industry changers walk the grounds of Stephens County Fairgrounds. But on this our inaugural trip to Duncan we bought “Rickie”, a Major Feat X Batman boar from Rick Whitman. That private purchase late one night on the back ally-way of the Fall Classic was the catalyst that changed our “industry” and brought us from two clueless kids from Utah to Galt Farms Genetics as we know it now.

Rickie lead us to 59-86, the RW sow that we bought for $6,500 the summer of 2014 (we thought our dad was going to kill us the morning after the sale when we told him). 59-86 raised our first boar we ever put on a boar stud - the $30,000 “I Believe” we sold to Hi Point Genetics! Soon after I Believe came Mama’s Calling (Hi Point), then Fire Away (Duelm’s/Cain Super Sires), followed by No Discussion (Crossroads), Salt Lake (Shipley’s), Money Heist (Triple B Sires), Skull Candy (Laird’s Premium Blend), Checked Out (Southern Gold), Pay Attention (Southern Gold), and Elevate (Shaffer’s Gold Rush).

In 2008, we thought the breeders who put boars in boar studs were like superheroes- what they did seemed impossible… Passion coupled with living right, developing friendships, investing tens of thousands (thank you dad!!!), and never giving up has got us a long long way though! We’ve fallen flat on our face plenty of times, changed practices and learned hard lessons. The sow herd has expanded from about 5 sows to 70 and back down again to a more manageable 20. We’ve had as many as 12 boars on stud here at Galt Farms and as little as 1. We’ve partnered on several boars that have made ginormous impacts, and been blessed to find not just one (59-86) but two (94) ELITE foundation females! All in all, seeing Pay Attention on the cover has stirred many feelings and memories, but most of all is a feeling of gratitude!

To those of you who have a dream, I hope we give you hope! No matter the odds stacked against you, or the difficulty of the journey, or the naysayers who always have an excuse, if you’re willing to go the extra mile anything is possible!

BEAST!

In our opinion this one has a chance at cutting a wide swath for a multitude of reasons! Along with having the stoutness, mass, hip/rear leg, and profile look it takes to win big ring banners he’s got maternal sow power packed for generations!

His mother is truly an elite sow and brings some fresh air genetically. She is sired by the late great RW Genetics boar, “Buckwheat” which was a Full Strut X Solid Monster. Buckwheat was an absolute creature of a boar but sired maternal traits like no other and Pay Attention’s mother is as strong maternally as anything that we’ve worked with!

Pay Attention’s grandmother is the Josey Wales X Sweet Emotion (Sugar Daddy X Hillbilly Bone) that we call “94” and she is literally the mother, grandmother, or great grandmother of every cross female we’ve got working on the farm! She is also the grandmother of Checked Out at Southern Gold Sires as well as another exciting Pay Out son headed to Shaffer’s.

And let’s not forget Pay Out… Bill allowed us to partner of this elite Steve Cobb & Family boar in the summer of 2022 and it has changed the trajectory of our program! With all due respect to the many great sires across the industry in our opinion he’s the best and has taken Tricked Out to a whole new level!

The showpig world is tough - gilts that can’t farrow, sows that don’t milk, winners that don’t generate, hype that’s not ever realized. We seem to all be chasing the backdrop and pay day so hard that we forget what makes a great one really great… The old matriarch “94” is loaded with her 11th litter… She looks the part to this day, farrows, milks, and GENERATES on every litter; so do her daughters and so do her grand daughters. We truly struck gold with the ol’ girl from RW Genetics and have built everything around her… Our advice: find a great one and build everything around her and don’t look back.
