My egg didn't hatch. Something happened and it appears to have died halfway through incubating. 😢
And I didn't lock up the chickens 1 night...and some thing got my male duck. 😭😭😭
Now I have 4 baby girls and no boy for them. Maybe I will order another male and female pair in the spring.
We also still have 30 black australorps...and to that I have added 2 guinea and 2 speckled sussex chicks. All are doing well right now. 🙏 that it stays that way and that the kittens continue to be safe. I have been hearing coyote packs the past few mornings.

This little fluff ball followed me out at about 4:20 am to help me with t-post ties. She stayed with me for the whole 2.5 hours it took to tie in 30 t-posts. There were 7 I couldn't do on my own, and she came back out with us when I had collected a helper..another 30 minutes. She is the best little kitten! She was well rewarded with lots of pets and snuggles. Though I will say I never imagined I would be doing the work with a kitten on my shoulder...

Sunday was Day 2 of our girl pen expansion: T-post day. At about noon, and with 14 posts to go (out of about 60), I received a call from our son that he was in an almost head-on collision on his way to work. Everyone was OK and no one got hurt, THANK YOU GOD! What saved everyone from injury was the other driver (who caused the accident) continued to drive off the road and through a fence into a field. As you can imagine, this put a prompt end to our build day as we had to pick him up. Yesterday was a vet appointment for the kittens and we had to run some errands so we took the day off and made the best of it.

Day 3 (today) we finished off the t-posts and put in the cross beams for the corners and gates. Tomorrow will be gates and fencing...and we should be done...though it might take 2 more days.

Phase 1 of the female goat pen expansion is under way!
The girls use to have 1/2 of an acre. We are giving them an additional 3/4 of an acre! When we are done, their space will have grown by 150%! They will be very happy goats when the work is complete in a few days.

EDIT: As expected, the 4th chick has passed. 😢

Woke up to 3 dead chicks this morning and 1 looks a bit sketchy.

The chicks looked good (no signs of being picked on or otherwise having been killed by cage mates), so I suspect an illness of some sort. I will probably lose this forth today or tomorrow. At least I had 3 extras of them so I am down to the original amount that I had originally ordered. Still sad though. :(

One of the new ducklings died. 😭😭😭😭 she was alive when I went to work, and dead when I got home. I check on them like a hawk watching for mice!

If any more die, I might just give up on ducklings for a little while. :(

Yesterday, I found a precious gift. One of my female ducklings had laid an egg before she died. I do not expect it to be fertile since both the male and the females were new to figuring out the mating thing. However, I stuck it in the incubator and will watch to see what happens.

We have kept the chickens and drake locked up since Friday. Today, I saw one of my dark brahma's out...she had been sitting on eggs in our front yard and that saved her life. I have 1 more live chicken than we previously thought. 🥰

Thank you, God, for these generous blessings upon our little farm.

When I got home from work, I went to try to find whatever I could of the ducks...instead I found chicken corpses. 😢 We lost 10 chickens in addition to the ducks. It is a heartbreaking day.

And then there was 1 male duck....

We've been locking the ducks up at night and letting them out suring the day... The 2 remaining girls have been murdered. :(

I had insurance on 3 of them, so 5 new female ducklings are coming next week. We are on vacation in 2 weeks, so we'll look at some new options to keep the new girls safe - wether that is getting live stock guardian dogs or guardian geese....in the short term, we'll just have to confine them, as sad as that is for them.

One of the miracles of life: About 12 more days to go until hatch day.

I am feeling incredibly blessed right now! This is the baby I thought wouldn't make it yesterday. She was very slow to wake up, very slow to make her first cry, and it took her over half the day to stand up. She was also very slow to nurse, and I had to help her (and her mom) figure it all out yesterday. While I hoped she would make it, seeing everything come together so slowly made me doubt. The Veterinarian said being first born was more traumatic for her than her sister and she may have been oxygen deprived waiting to be born. Seeing this video of her today and watching her nurse on her mom. I have no doubt she is going to make it! And her mother has made a full turn into being a wonderful mom.

We are heading into that wonderful, yet nerve-wracking, time of year...birthing! Three of our girls are confirmed pregnant. Poppy x Noah - expecting twins again - due 3/13 Moana x Noah - expecting at least 1 - due 3/13 Lizzy (registration as Aphrodite) x Noah - expecting at least 1- due ?? Around 3/13- 3/20 based on baby's size We haven't been able to confirm one way or the other on Devi. If she is pregnant, it will likely be 1 and due on 3/20 Sunshine did not take this year despite repeated attempts. Here is a poor quality video of one of Poppy's babies' heart beating. In the comments is a picture of a rear leg on Lizzy's baby. Facebook won't let me post pictures and videos in a post. 😒

When you have your legs figured out, the next thing to figure out is jumping and playing!

Baby boy (P4) playing with older boy (P1) on this beautiful and warm sunny day, until P4's momma breaks it up. P4 was the baby we thought might not make it after a very difficult delivery, being born on the absolute coldest night, and his older brother not surviving. He is a fighter and is doing really well.

Taken at 9:44am today. Just under 12 hours old and already figuring out his feet.
