Women's Animal Center Women's Animal Center founded in 1869 - Animal Shelter, Pet Adoptions, Vet Hospital, Community Programs and Dog Training
PA Kennel License # 1516
(452)

During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because

she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as Women’s Animal Center (formerly Women's Humane Society)

Now, 150+ years later, Women's Animal Center, carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals. Women's Animal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

Meet Lily, our Shelter Pet of the Week! 🐶

This silly, spunky girl may be a senior, but she sure doesn't act like it! Lily loves rolling over for belly rubs, playing outside, and “hopping” while she runs. She is 7 years old and needs to be the only pet in the home, although she can go home with older children.

Lily has been in our shelter since September, and is more than ready to find her forever family. Please spread the word, or stop in Women’s Animal Center to meet her!

Meet Dusty Buns and Sylvester Stallone. Both are two of our longest kitty residents and both are diabetic- and unfortunately, that is likely not a coincidence.

Diabetic cats are considered “special needs” cats and require a little bit of extra care, like insulin injections and prescription food. However, caring for diabetic cats is much easier than it sounds. Both Dusty and Sylvester have been diabetic their whole lives, so they are used to their treatment. Plus, with the proper care, they can live normal lives and potentially even go into remission! We are determined to find both of them their forever homes soon, so both of their adoption fees are just $50.

No experience with special needs cats is required- just someone who is able to be the loving caretaker that these kitties deserve! If you’re able to give to these extra-special cats an extra-special home, please visit Women’s Animal Center to meet them! 🐱🧡

Do you have a cozy, low-traffic home that is perfect for cat naps? If so, Daisy is the cat for you!

This beautiful 7 year-old senior has been with us since early September, making her our longest kitty resident. Although we give her lots of love (and treats!), she would love to be able to nap undisturbed, which is hard to do when you have a few dozen shelter roommates.

Daisy’s and all our other senior pets’ adoption fees are just $50 this Saturday as part of Senior Pet Saturdays at Women’s Animal Center! If you have the perfect home for Daisy to get her beauty sleep, we encourage you to come by and meet her! 🧡

Cold weather got your dog feeling some cabin fever? Indoor mental enrichment activities are a great way to keep your dog entertained when it’s too cold to play outside! ❄

A “snuffle mat” for is a mat covered in felt or fleece that you can hide treats or food in to encourage dogs to use their natural sense of smell to search and find the delicious food inside!

Check out our tutorial on how to create a DIY snuffle mat using a sink mat and fabric. This game is sure to keep your dog busy, and keep both of you nice and warm inside! 🐾

Thank you to all our Mini Paws participants who spent their Day of Service with us yesterday! Our shelter pets were thrilled to receive homemade treats, toys, and even some pets from our participants. 🐾

Is your child interested in joining? Our next Mini Paws Club session will take place on Monday, February 17th (Presidents’ Day) from 9 AM-12 PM. Join us for a fun day of learning about the pets that have lived in the White House, and help us “campaign” for our shelter animals to find their forever families! 🧡

This is Curly, and he would very much like that treat you’re holding, please and thank you. 🐶

Curly is a 2 year-old Bulldog mix, and he is our Shelter Pet of the Week! He is open to meeting resident pets and older children. Curly needs some time to warm up to new people, but once he has, he is a goofy boy who loves treats, leaning up against his people for pets, and running around outside.

Stop in our Adoption Center this week to meet this sweet and silly boy! 🥰

Meet Kramer- our shelter pet of the week!

Kramer is 2 years old and recently had one of his front legs amputated after he came to us with an injury. Although he’s still adjusting to his “tri-pawd” life, nothing has stopped him from eating all the treats and playing with his toys! He loves to relax in his cozy bed, so a home where he can lounge would be perfect for him.

Stop in our Adoption Center this week to meet sweet Kramer! 🐾
