Women's Animal Center Women's Animal Center founded in 1869 - Animal Shelter, Pet Adoptions, Vet Hospital, Community Programs and Dog Training

During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because

she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as Women’s Animal Center (formerly Women's Humane Society)

Now, 150+ years later, Women's Animal Center, carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals. Women's Animal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

This is Tristan, and he’s our Senior Shelter Pet of the Week! 🐱

Tristan is a 12 year-old male whose favorite activity in the shelter is yelling at everyone who walks by for attention (and treats). Although he’s older, he is very much young at heart- and definitely has some “orange cat behavior.” If you love sweet, cuddly, and playful older cats, Tristan is the one for you!

Tristan’s adoption fees are only $50 tomorrow as part of Senior Pet Saturday at Women’s Animal Center. November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, and we’re hoping to find him his retirement home soon! 🧡

Women’s Animal Center is thrilled to announce the naming and dedication of the Elizabeth A. Fuller Education Center (formerly known as Founder’s Hall) at our Bensalem facility.

Liz Fuller volunteered and served on the Women’s Humane Society Board of Directors for four decades, serving 27 of those years as President of the Board. During her presidency, she initiated the expansion of humane education programs and was a driving force behind the organization’s move to Bensalem and the development of a new State of the Art facility for our education programs, animal shelter, adoption center and veterinary hospital. We are proud to name our Education Center after her and continue to carry on her mission of providing humane education in our community and beyond.

Thank you Liz for all the work you have done for our Center and our community! 🧡🐾

Our Fall Open House is just five days away, and we’re so excited to feature one of our favorite traditions.

This beautiful “Tribute Tree” stands in our lobby, and every year, visitors to Women’s Animal Center add ornaments with messages honoring their beloved pets. We are proud to provide a space for members of our community to share memories of their loved ones.

Tribute Tree ornaments will be available for purchase throughout the season and at our Open House this Saturday. We invite you to stop in and hang an ornament on the tree in honor of a pet or someone who loved them. 🧡🐾

*Please note that this is a cash-only event.

Our final Animal Shelter Appreciation Week spotlight is on our resident renaissance man, Brian!

Brian is our Shelter Manager and oversees all the shelter activities including maintenance of kennels, staff supervision, animal management, and animal handling and safety training for all staff and volunteers. He also leads the collection and distribution of supplies for our Pet Food Pantry! We are so thankful to have Brian on our team, and are so appreciative of all he does for Women’s Animal Center!

Today’s Animal Shelter Appreciation Week spotlight is on Angelina and Sarah!

We love our cats and small animals, and so do our shelter staff members! Angelina and Sarah are just two of the awesome people here who ensure our cats and small animals are fed, have clean homes, get enrichment, and are loved. We are so appreciative of all they do for our smallest residents! 🐱🐰

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, and we’re so excited to celebrate! This month, our Shelter Pets of the Week in conjunction with Bensalem Patch will feature adoptable seniors.

This week’s Shelter Pet of the Week is Daisy! This beautiful 7 year-old female is looking for a low-traffic home where she can nap and cuddle all day long. She would do best in a home with either no pets or older pets who can go her speed. Daisy is one of our kitty long-timers, and we’re hoping she finds her forever retirement home soon! 🐾

Today’s Animal Shelter Appreciation Week spotlight is on Jess and Jason!

Keeping our shelter animals healthy is one of our biggest priorities. Jess and Jason help ensure that all of our kennels are clean, that animals are vaccinated, and that all our shelter pets get the care they need in our veterinary hospital. Their work is so important, and we are so grateful for all they do to ensure our adoptable pets are getting the best care possible! 🐾

We had the pleasure of visiting our community partner, Laurel Hill, for a delicious brunch and tour of the historic Laurel Hill West Cemetery grounds and Laurel Hill Pet Cemetery this past weekend!

Laurel Hill offers families a beautifully designed space created to honor the lasting memory of their beloved pets. Women's Animal Center's board members, donors, and friends met the Laurel Hill leadership team who provide compassionate pet services for people’s four-legged family members.

We are so grateful to Laurel Hill for their supportive and generous partnership! Together, we believe that the bond we share with our pets is forever. 🧡

Today’s Animal Shelter Appreciation Week spotlight is on Hannah and Lily! 🐾

Making sure our resident dogs get time outside to play and run around is super important to their care! Shelter staff members like Hannah and Lily spend time daily taking dogs out, playing with them, and loving them. As much as we are appreciative of the work they do, we’re sure our shelter dogs appreciate them even more! 🐶
