Women's Animal Center Women's Animal Center founded in 1869 - Animal Shelter, Pet Adoptions, Vet Hospital, Community Programs and Dog Training
PA Kennel License # 1516

During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because

she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as Women’s Animal Center (formerly Women's Humane Society)

Now, 150+ years later, Women's Animal Center, carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals. Women's Animal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

Yeehaw! Meet Texas Tommy, our Shelter Pet of the Week! 🤠

Tommy is a 3 year-old male who wants nothing more than to get pets and play! This sweet guy is super affectionate and playful, and is more than ready to meet his new human best friend.

He is FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) positive, so his adoption fee is waived! FIV cats may have a slight increased risk of infection, though this is not usually the case, and with proper care can live normal, healthy lives.

Stop by Women’s Animal Center this week to meet him! 🐾

We love our senior pets, and we know you will too! 🥰

Jai is one of our sweet seniors looking for her forever home! She is 10 years old, and is looking for a home where she can snuggle up and be a lap cat. Jai and our other seniors can go home with you for just $50, and we are anxious to find them their forever families.

Stop by Women’s Animal Center to meet Jai and her other adoptable senior friends!

A huge thank you to the Neshaminy Target in Bensalem for their generous donation of dog and cat food for our pet food pantry last month!

Women's Animal Center distributes pet food to families in need at the Bristol Fresh Connect Food Pantry on the third Friday of each month. Because of our neighbors at Target, we were stocked full for our most recent day at the pantry! Thank you so much for helping us support families in need! 🧡🐾

Women’s History Month may have come to a close, but at Women’s Animal Center, every day is a reminder and celebration of the women of our past, present, and future, and every pet we help is part of that celebration!

Community members like you help us continue the mission Caroline Earle White started nearly 156 years ago. You can be part of our legacy by adopting one of the 20 female pets we currently have available for adoption- including long-timers Stella, Minnie, Lily, and Dusty Buns! Stop by our Adoption Center to meet these four gorgeous girls and all the other pets we are working tirelessly to find forever homes for. 🧡

Although we often celebrate the women of our past, the women of our present are blazing new paths forward every day. That’s why today’s spotlight features our incredible all-women team of veterinarians! 🐾🩺

Through their care and expertise, Dr. Dickey, Dr. Blowers, and Dr. Langan have provided everything from preventative to life-saving care for thousands of owned and shelter pets in our community. Their work touches countless families each year and inspires other women to follow in their footsteps. We are so proud to have them as part of our history!

Today’s spotlight features our board of directors! 🧡

In accordance with our founding charter and to honor the legacy of Caroline Earle White, our board of directors is and has always been comprised entirely of women! The women on our board have been instrumental in helping our organization grow and achieve so many milestones, including our move to Bensalem in 1994, our 150th anniversary celebration in 2019, and the renaming and dedication of the Elizabeth A. Fuller Education Center this past fall. 🐾

This past holiday season, Women’s Animal Center was the beneficiary of Raising Cane's plush puppy sales at stores in the Greater Philadelphia region. The seven local Cane’s locations raised $2,400, and the funds will support the care of our shelter pets waiting for their forever homes!

Josh (Area Leader of Marketing), Igraine (Trevose restaurant leader), and Susie (Fairless Hills restaurant leader) stopped by yesterday to present a check, take a tour of our facility, and drop off a complimentary Cane's lunch for our hard-working shelter and veterinary staff.

We are so grateful for the support of Raising Cane’s and everyone who purchased a plush puppy! 🧡🐶

It’s and we’re excited to showcase one of our founders, Annie L. Lowry! 🧡

Annie L. Lowry served as a founding member, manager, and later as Vice President of the Women’s SPCA. She spearheaded the adoption of watering stations throughout the city of Philadelphia for work horses and small animals. Upon her death in 1908, a portion of her estate was set aside to establish the Lowry Home for Smaller Animals, whose mission was to care for homeless cats and dogs "helpless to help themselves." This was the original building of what would later become Women’s Animal Center- and America’s First Animal Shelter™️.

Annie Lowry’s watering troughs can still be found in and around Philadelphia! One of these original watering troughs was relocated to our Bensalem facility in 2019 as part of our 150th anniversary celebration, and sits outside the entrance of our building as a reminder of the incredible women whose work we continue to this day. 🐾
