🌞 With the warm weather upon us, our friend Chewie wanted to remind everyone that our pets are more vulnerable to heat than we are 🌡

Heatstroke can be life-threatening, but with a few precautions, you can help keep your furry friends safe and cool all summer long! 🐾

🔹 Hydration is Key: Always ensure your pets have access to fresh, cool water. Dehydration can set in quickly, so make sure their water bowl is filled and easily accessible, whether you’re at home or on the go.

🔹 Never Leave Pets in Parked Cars: Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket in minutes. On an 85°F day, the temperature inside a car can reach 102°F in just 10 minutes! Leaving your pet in the car, even for a short time, can be extremely dangerous.

🔹 Watch Out for Hot Pavement: If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Try walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the ground is cooler. Protective booties can also help shield their paws from the heat.

🔹 Provide Shade and Cool Places: Make sure your pets have a shady spot to relax if they’re outside. If possible, bring them indoors during the hottest part of the day. Cooling mats or wet towels can help keep them comfortable.

🔹 Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Heavy panting, drooling, rapid breathing, vomiting, and lethargy can all be signs that your pet is overheating. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

🔬The Benton-Franklin Health District has received positive tests for toxic algae at Leslie Groves and Howard Amon, and it poses a serious threat to your pets.

🌱Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria) can be deadly if ingested, so please keep your dogs out of the water until the alerts have been removed. Production of algae toxins is the highest between August to October due to increased air and water temperatures ☀️

If your pet shows signs of illness after being near water, seek veterinary care immediately. Let's keep our furry friends safe this summer! 🐾💧
