Absolutely wonderful things are happening at the Humane Society of Marshall County here in Western KY! A totally ROCKSTAR staff, together with some diehard board members, are putting heart and soul into finding furever homes for these loving, deserving sweethearts!

A lot of people have been sending me the article about the tragic accident at the vets office. This is awful for everyone.
It is our responsibility as pet owners to keep our dogs safe and keep them under control. The vet office can be a high stress zone for dogs making them act out of their normal character. Just because your dog is fine does not mean others are dealing with it the same way. Here are some rules I follow when taking our own dogs to the vet.

Obedience training is super important. If the lobby isn’t super busy I make my dogs down stay and not engage with others.

Try not to sit in the way of doors so dogs have enough room entering and exiting the building.

Flexi leads are not a good option. Make sure your dog has a good fitting collar they can not slip out of with a 4 to 6 ft lead. A slip lead is a great option for the vet.

Do not let your dog at the end of their leash.

Respect other dogs space keep 6 to 10 feet between you and other dogs. This not only keeps your dog safe from a potential attack, but space from sickness other dogs may have.

If a dog owner is crowding your space advocate for your dog ask them to step away. If they do not listen get in between them and your dog and walk away.

If the lobby is busy it might be best to wait in the car and have them call you when ready.

If your pet is small enough to carry in a crate keep them in there until you are back in the exam room.

If your dog is reactive to people or animals muzzle training is a great way to keep your dog safe from lashing out. Even if your dog doesn’t like a muzzle safety needs to always come first. Training with the muzzle at home is a great way to make wearing it more positive.

If your dog has an aggressive bite history towards other animals. Call the front desk when you arrive. Simple things like annual check ups and vaccines can be done in the car. If your dog needs to come in this makes the lobby aware of the situation and people can clear out while your dog goes for the exam room. Make sure your dog is muzzled at all times.

Following these simple steps can save your pets life.

💜🐾Found A Hound Rescue will always be near and dear to our hearts. Without them, we would have never found our Darcie. We are forever grateful for them and for everything they do for these fur babies. If you want a new four-legged family member, please consider one of these sweet dogs.
