ADOPTED! We are thrilled to announce that Daisy and Cupcake have found their forever home!

Cupcake and Daisy are a delightful duo looking for a loving forever home together. These gentle yet playful sisters share a special bond and will bring double the love and joy to your life!
Cupcake, the outgoing leader of the pair, is always up for a play session with other cats and adores being cuddled. She has a curious and friendly personality that instantly wins hearts.
Daisy, the more reserved sister, is loving and laid-back. She finds comfort in quiet moments, especially when her fur is being gently combed. Her soothing purr will let you know how much she appreciates your attention.
Their sweetest trait? Their synchronized purrs when they’re asking for head scratches! Both are wonderful with children, great with other cats, and tolerate dogs, though they prefer to keep their distance. 💕💕Foster Home Needed💕💕

Mr Gatsby has been roaming a neighborhood for well over a year now. He would come and go begging for food; disappear and show back up when they thought he was gone for good. He eluded traps and carriers full of food hoping to trick him into the indoor cozy life.

He adored fancy feast beef pate and would cry so loud he could be heard inside the house from outside, wherever he was.

This past week with the ice storm Gatsby hurt his leg and he was finally caught. We can’t imagine him trying to survive these last few days in the ice and feeezing temps barely able to walk! He would have frozen to death.

Gatsby is 2 years old and has been to the vet (thank you so much Animal Urgent Care of Bentonville ) and he only has soft tissue damage to his leg. He is already walking on it. You can tell at one point he was loved, had a cozy bed and was socialized. He is super, super sweet! Let us know if you can help Gatsby. We can also do a foster to adopt.

There are so many surrender requests coming to even begin to help them all is impossible. As this area grows, its getting worse by the day.

The scenario we will focus on today is the ill family member, or the death of a family member.

The solve is to PREPARE NOW for what will happen to your cats if you get ill. No matter your health, but especially if your health is poor or decreasing DO NOT WAIT.

We all expect that family will step up and do whatever is necessary. In some cases this is true. However, reality is that many , many do not. If you think a family member will care for them and won't try to euthanize them if they can't find another place for them to go- you are unfortunately mistaken.

At least a quarter of the people who call in for help threaten to euthanize if you won't take them.

Get family/friend agreement and get it in writing. Alternatively you can work with a local rescue like us on a pre-plan for your cats when you can no longer take care of them. Here is a sample of calls from this week:

"My bother passed away two weeks ago and is going to live with family, and he can't take his 3 cats. I don't want to euthanize them but running out of options"

"My aunt and uncle left their cats with us when they went into nursing homes, and we have to move and can't take them, we called the vet but don't want to euthanize them"

"My mother went into an assisited care facility and I cannot bring her cat back with me. It's currently in the house (or often they are left outside) alone."

Prepare now, don't leave it up to chance.

02/17/2025

All around the country, locally owned small private vet offices are being bought out by large corporations at alarming rates. Those large corporations raise prices and make them even more out of reach than they already are. They make the stressful reality of being a veterinarian, even more stressful as su***de rates continue to climb.

The impact to a rescue like us is that these vet offices are usually unwilling to work with rescues for discounts on services, spay/neuter or even to get in with emergencies etc.

Where you can, support locally owned private practices.

An article from A-Z Pet about burn out and buy out and what veterinarians are facing in their field.
Read the story below:

—We recently had to take one of our dogs to the pet emergency room on a long holiday weekend. She had stopped eating and moving and was clearly not well. We received a diagnosis of advanced osteosarcoma, and we made the painful decision to put her down. I was with my other dog at the vet for her check-up the following week, where I filled my vet in on what had happened over the weekend. She was devastated — both for our loss as well as the fact she hadn’t been able to provide the care for our pup in her final hours.

I’m friends with my vet. We talk openly and frankly. We’ve known each other for nearly a decade, and we’ve had some fascinating conversations about animals and the veterinary industry as a whole. She was the one who first shared with me that su***de rates among veterinarians are one of the highest of any profession. In fact, according to the National Institutes for Health, su***de rates among veterinarians are four times higher than the general population and twice as much as in the general medical field. It’s because of statistics like that that organizations like Not One More Vet exist.

So when I was in my vet’s office the week after our sweet Sadie was put down, I naturally asked her how she was doing. “Okay,” she said unconvincingly. As I asked more questions, I gained some astonishing insight into the current state of veterinary medicine. That private practices are being gobbled up by corporate entities … that the cost of care is climbing ever-higher … that more than ever, amazing veterinarians are leaving the field, unwilling to endure the mental toll dealt from the daily stresses and client treatment.

Agreeing to speak openly with me for this article if her name was kept anonymous, my vet shared some eye-opening insights. I’m sharing them with you as most people with whom I’ve discussed this topic have been unaware of just how volatile this industry is. And as responsible pet owners, we owe it to our vets and our pets to be aware and mindful of those providing care to our most precious animals.

You mentioned when we last spoke that you’re concerned about the state of veterinary medicine. Tell me what you mean by that.
- I think that veterinary medicine has become too corporate. I fear many pet owners won’t be able to afford to keep their pets healthy in the future. In the past month, I have had three families take their pets for hospitalization to a specialty clinic and each cost five figures to treat. Although I agree that we should charge for our services, I think that the best veterinary care is not affordable for most people now.

Why do you think that so many private practices are closing or selling to larger corporate vet practices?
- Running a small business is hard. Running a small business that is a vet clinic is much, much harder. The business owner must deal with strong emotions and opinions from employees and clients on a daily basis. Private equity groups make very generous offers to many of these vets, and they sell because they just can’t do it anymore.

There’s another fascinating fact that I learned from you, and that’s about the incredibly high su***de rate among the veterinarian community. Tell me about that. What is the driving force behind that?
- It’s an emotional roller coaster. One minute you are in a room trying to convince an owner to perform bloodwork on a cat that is losing weight, the next minute you are diagnosing cancer in a pet you’ve known since birth, and then the next minute a dog comes in after being hit by a car and you have to perform CPR. Then you have to walk up to the reception to explain to a complaining owner why you are running behind. You think this is extreme, but that’s a typical Tuesday for vets.

When a private vet practice sells to a corporation, what does that mean for the pet owner and their pet? What are the pros and cons?
- There aren’t many pros. Many clients notice more wait times, less personal touches, and higher prices. Most fees and service prices go up. The vet doesn’t make as many of their own decisions to do what’s best for the pet. They lose control of their medical choices.

What is the most challenging thing about the work you do right now?
- The rising costs of goods and managing people.

If you had to predict what the world of veterinary medicine will look like in 5-10 years, what do you envision? What’s changed? What’s the same?
- I pray that there are still privately owned practices. I do think that the quality of the medicine has become exemplary. This is the best part of the profession right now. We now have countless internists, radiologists, cardiologists, surgeons, and even oncologists around the corner [where we live]. That was unheard of 5-10 years ago. However, people need to be able to afford those specialties.

What is the solution to slow the mass exodus of vets from the profession?
- Maybe awareness. A couple of months ago, I had diagnosed cancer in four patients and then had six euthanasias in one week. I went out to dinner with some friends that weekend. I told them I had a bad week and started telling them about it. One of them stopped me and told me that I see enough puppies and kittens to get over it. That sucked. I don’t think people understand. Not even your family. They think they do, but they don’t.

Do you have a breaking point where you’ll finally throw in the towel?
- I’m not sure. I keep saying I can’t do this anymore, but then I save a life and it keeps me going.

What are some ways that pet owners can be a part of the solution?

1. Get pet insurance.
2. Choose practices that are privately owned.
3. And be nice. That helps.

For all the vets who have provided such phenomenal care to all of our babies over the years- Thank you!

Post from Feral Cat Project. The message may feel harsh but we need the message to be spread.

BEFORE YOU GET OFFENDED when someone suggests you neuter your cat please read this.

1. When a cat becomes pregnant, it is not through choice. There is no romantic liaison.... it literally is the equivalent of sexual assault. The male cat's p***s is barbed and causes excruciating pain for the female, and she cannot escape.

2. Every rescue is dependent on volunteers. Volunteers who lose family time, money, sleep, weekends and evenings caring for and fundraising to ensure unwanted cats get the correct care.

3.Animals have no voice... So when somebody speaks on their behalf, don’t be upset.

4. Uneutered Male cats will wander miles in search of females. They will fight ferociously and cause terrible injury to other males in the process. They can spread dreadful life threatening diseases like Feline Leukemia.

5. Every litter of kittens born in your home and sold adds to the problem by stopping a rescue cat being adopted.

6. Rescues are full to capacity with cats which have been bought on a whim of Facebook and surrendered or abandoned due to boredom or inability to afford vet bills, Neuter, Vaccines, Food, Flea and worm treatment

7. Each rescue has a waiting list. They spend literally thousands of dollars a year on Vet Treatment. Food, Litter. Flea and Worm Treatment, Electricity, Shelter Rent, Fuel... These are just the basics.

8. Behind the scenes volunteers nurse kittens every 2-4 hours, feed ferals everyday, clean litter boxes and field calls from people several times a day. All this while fundraising constantly. Worry about cats who have been surrendered and are traumatised by being torn from its surroundings and carry the guilt of the decisions they have to make.

9. Rescues have volunteers who drive for miles. Trapping stray and dumped cats, picking up unwanted cats and spending hours on the phone trying to find spaces and homes for unwanted pets.

10. Volunteers spend their free time and energy picking up the pieces from people who allow cats to have kittens and refuse to neuter.

Please don’t be offended when someone asks are you getting your cat neutered - rescues see the consequences of these actions every day 365 days a year and are simply giving a voice to the vulnerable creatures so casually given away or sold for a dollar.
